(KGTV) - Twenty-nine migrants were processed at the Calexico Port of Entry after non-profits say they were separated from their children and deported.Sandra Cordero, Director at Families Belong Together, said 27 children ages 5 to 15 have been separated from their parents. Some for more than a year. Cordero said the parents came from Central America, including Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.Together Rising and Al Otro Lado raised money to fly the parents to Tijuana. Cordero said they stayed in Tijuana for two weeks preparing to go to the Calexico Port of Entry. Cordero said they presented themselves Saturday morning and U.S. Customs and Border Protection told them the detention center was at capacity.While waiting, Cordero shared some of the parents' stories, "he was trying to prepare his son because he knew they would be separated but he couldn't find the words or the feeling of how he was going to tell him that," Speaking about a man named Jose from Guatemala. He stood beside her while she spoke and wiped away tears. After 10 hours, the parents were brought in to process their asylum requests."We just found out that they're going to accept five families at a time and they're letting them all in, so thank you thank you thank you," Amanda Doyle, Vice President of Together Rising, said tearfully."I think it was really us, our presence here, and the presence of all of our supporters online, calling tweeting, pressuring, we're so lucky to have all these supporters that made today happen," Cordero said.Cordero said they would be back Sunday to ensure the parents were being processed quickly so they may be connected with their U.S. sponsors and ultimately reunited with their children. Cordero said they have lawyers who know where the children are and going through procedures to ensure they can be released to their parents. 1879

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of people packed into a classroom in Carlsbad Wednesday night, concerned about community safety in the wake of a brutal murder. More than 200 people showed up. Many were forced to listen from the hallway because the room was so crowded. “We don’t feel as safe as we used to,” said Carlsbad resident Charlie Christenson about why he came to the meeting. “I thought it was great to have the forum,” he added. It came more than a week after 64-year-old Marj Gawitt was stabbed to death in her home on Outrigger Lane, a development overlooking the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Two transients were arrested and charged in the murder. Prosecutors say Gawitt was stabbed 50 times and tortured. Still, she managed to call 911 herself and alert police about her assailants. “I’ve been a police officer in Carlsbad for over 28 years, and to my knowledge this is the firs time in that particular community a crime like that has happened,” said Carlsbad police Chief Neil Gallucci. For two hours, Gallucci and other top police officials fielded questions from residents about the murder and the lingering safety concerns it has brought about.Christenson said he came to ask the chief one question. “I asked him if there were any changes to outreach or enforcement in response to this issue and he said no,” said Christenson. “That was disappointing.” But Gallucci said the meeting itself was necessary to get a feel for the issues. “I think having this meeting was a big step forward,” he said. Cereal company General Mills announced on Thursday that its employees are eligible for up to 20 weeks of paid maternity leave under a new company policy, effective Jan. 1, 2019. Also part of the announcement, General Mills said it will offer up to 12 weeks for paid paternity and adoption leave for its employees. While the United States' Family Medical Leave Act requires most employers to allow staff to take up to 12 weeks off, the act does not require employers to pay employees for leave. General Mills said the new rules apply to its salaried and non-union employees. Other changes in family leave policy announced by General Mills include:      ● Caregiver Leave: A new benefit in 2019, General Mills will now offer caregivers a two-week paid leave for the care of immediate family members with a serious health condition. 882
