CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A South Bay teen was recently published in The New York Times, sharing a very personal account of what distance learning is like for him during the pandemic. Isaac Lozano is a senior at Bonita Vista High School, a school in the Sweetwater Union High School District. Lozano praises the district for starting the school year virtually because of COVID-19. Lozano told ABC 10News that sharing his reality wasn’t easy, but he now feels proud that he can be a voice for other students like him.The op-ed titled “Remote Learning Is Hard. Losing Family Members is Worse" was published on Aug. 13.In the article Lozano, a straight-A student, details his struggles with distance learning at home. He lives in a two-bedroom apartment, shares a room with his two brothers, and both parents are essential workers. Lozano also lives in the South Bay, one of the areas most impacted by COVID-19 in San Diego County.Lozano writes about not having a designated place to study, moving from room to room in his family’s apartment. He also highlights internet connectivity issues, but insists he has concerns about going back to school before it is safe to do so.Lozano gets personal in the article, sharing that COVID-19 hits close to home. His uncle died of the virus.Since the article was published, Lozano says he’s heard from people offering to help. He’s also heard from a publishing company, a literary magazine and even received an internship offer from a congressional candidate.Lozano will be applying to colleges in the fall and is interested in applying to Stanford, Yale, and UCLA. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Police are searching for an 81-year-old man who was last seen in the Otay Ranch Mall area.Chula Vista Police says Donald Mooring was last seen around 3 p.m. near the Otay Ranch Mall on Thursday. Police add that Mooring may be suffering from the effects of dementia.Mooring is described as a black man, 5-foot 9-inches tall, and weighing about 230 pounds. He may be driving a white 2010 Dodge Caravan with California plates "7CHU230".He is believed to be wearing a green plaid shirt, khaki pants, and black tennis shoes.Anyone with information on Mooring's whereabouts is asked to call CVPD at 619-691-5151. 643

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - One man is dead after a fight erupted at a South Bay gas station Monday night.Police said two men began arguing outside the AM/PM gas station at 765 E Street just after 8 p.m. Police responded to find one man unresponsive on the ground. The victim was taken to Scripps Hospital in Chula Vista, where he was pronounced dead.Chula Vista police reviewed surveillance footage from the gas station, which showed the victim sitting on a curb asking customers for money at the gas station.The suspect, later identified as 64-year-old Carl Keele, walked up and was confronted by the victim, according to police. The two men appeared to argue before the victim stood up and attempted to punch Keele.The two began to throw punches and kicks at one another until the victim collapsed. Keele then walked off camera and left the scene, police said.Police said the victim could be seen breathing while laying on the ground. Witnesses told police they thought the victim was joking around after he fell.Police later located Keele and took him into custody. Keele told officers the victim asked him for as he approached the AM/PM. He told him no and the victim called him a racial slur, according to Keele.Keele said he told others not to give the victim money and the man became angry and started swinging at him. Police said Keele defended himself by throwing punches in return until the victim collapsed.Police said based on witness statements and Keele's statement, they do not see any grounds to charge Keele.The victim's name is not being released pending family notification.CVPD is still investigating the incident. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One driver was arrested at a DUI checkpoint in Chula Vista overnight Saturday. According to the Chula Vista Police Department, the checkpoint was held on the 300 block of East H Street between 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 a.m. Sunday. More than 3,500 vehicles traveled through the checkpoint, 1,209 were screened, 13 drivers underwent sobriety tests and one was arrested. Seven vehicles were also impounded. “The Chula Vista PD will be conducting additional DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoints throughout the remainder of the year in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways,” police said. 825

(KGTV) -- The Port of San Diego and City of Chula Vista reached a milestone today, approving the financial agreement for the Chula Vista Bayfront resort hotel and convention center project."It's taken us 30 years to get to this day, and it's certainly worth it," Chula Vista Mayor, Mary Casillas Salas said. Officials also authorized a revenue-sharing agreement between the two agencies.The entire project will cost .1 billion. Of that, RIDA Developement will invest 5 million. The city and the port authority will pay for a combined 0+ million. Port commissioners said it is a large investment for an even larger long-term reward. "As far as what we'll get back, we will see an immediate impact by the fact that it's going to create 10,000 construction jobs, and it's going to put about a billion dollars in the local and regional economy," Moore said. RELATED: South Bay residents get an idea of massive bayfront developmentIn August of 2017, the City gave residents a better idea of what the Bayfront will look like in the next 20 years.The anchor for the Bayfront is set to be a .1 billion resort hotel and convention center that the city says will be built by Houston-based RIDA Development.The current Chula Vista RV Park will also move roughly a mile away to make room for construction.
