BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- China and Japan should strengthen cooperation to deal with the financial crisis, said Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo on Friday.     "China is willing to work with Japan to properly handle sensitive issues in bilateral relations and consolidate our political foundations," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.     In a meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu, Wu said China-Japan relations were improving and cooperation in various fields have expanded. BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday sent a message of condolences to his Italian counterpart Giorgio Napolitano over the heavy loss of life and property in a deadly earthquake that struck central Italy.     In the message, Hu expressed condolences to the victims and their families and those affected by the earthquake on behalf of the Chinese government and people as well as in his own name.     Hu believed that, under the leadership of Napolitano and the Italian government, the Italian people will overcome the difficulties arising from the quake and restore the normal life and work in the quake-affected areas at an early date.     A powerful earthquake hit central Italy early Monday, killing 207 people, injuring about 1,500 and leaving around 70,000 homeless, said the latest reports.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao also sent messages of condolences to Italian Senate Speaker Renato Schifani, Chamber of Deputies Speaker Gianfranco Fini and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, respectively.

BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- China lodged another stern representation to Japan on Friday over Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone's remarks that the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and United States is applicable to the Diaoyu Islands.     According to the reports by the Taiwan-based Broadcasting Corporation of China (BCC), an official of the U.S. State Department, familiar with East Asian affairs, said at a press conference in Washington on Friday that the Diaoyu Islands were always under Japan's administrative jurisdiction and the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and United States was applicable to them.     Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone echoed the U.S. official's remarks afterwards.     Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu rejected Nakasone's remarks later in a press release, saying the Japan-U.S. Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty should not harm the interests of third parties, including China.     "Any words and deeds that bring the Diaoyu Islands into the scope of the Japan-U.S. Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty are absolutely unacceptable for the Chinese people," he said.     Ma stressed again that the Diaoyu Islands and adjacent islets had been Chinese territories since ancient times and China held "indisputable" sovereignty over the islands.     "We have lodged stern representations to Japan again and required the United States to clarify reports on the issue," he said.     He also urged the two countries to realize the great sensitivity of the Diaoyu Islands issue and proceed with discretion in word and deed, so as to avoid damage to the general interests of China-Japan and China-U.S. relations and regional stability.

TOKYO, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met late Monday with executives of major Japanese media, urging media of both countries to make due contributions to the advancement of Sino-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that both Chinese and Japanese media need to adopt a responsible attitude to report issues concerning bilateral relations and situations of their respective countries in line with the principle of authenticity, objectivity and comprehensiveness in a bid to promote mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples.     The media should also proceed from the general situation of Sino-Japan relations to boost mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas, focusing more on news reports that are beneficial to closer bilateral cooperation and providing more information that is conducive to China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations, he said.     Exchanges and cooperation between the media of the two nations, such as "Beijing-Tokyo Forum" and "China-Japan Media Dialogue", help to establish new channels and forms for frank, in-depth and rational dialogues as well as a platform for the two peoples to deepen their mutual understanding, he said.     Executives of key Japanese media such as public broadcaster NHK,TV Asahi, The Yumiuri Shimbun, Kyodo News Agency said that it is the common aspiration of both peoples as well as their historical responsibility to promote the steady and sustained growth of Japan-China relations.     They also made proposals on advancing exchanges between media of the two countries, expanding bilateral cooperation on economy and trade and improving feelings the two peoples harbor toward each other.     On Tuesday, Li visited the headquarters of The Yumiuri Shimbun and NHK, inquiring in detail about the management and operation of the two Japanese media.     Li arrived here Sunday for an official goodwill visit. Japan is the third leg of his four-nation tour, which has already taken him to Australia and Myanmar. Li is to conclude his visit to Japan Wednesday and leave for the Republic of Korea.
