CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Pastor Art Hodges stood on the steps of Chula Vista City Hall Wednesday, surrounded by about 50 people of faith. "Hear our prayer. Forgive our sin," Hodges said during the group prayer.The people were rallying against a program that calls for drag queens to read to children. Drag Queen Story Hour is scheduled to start Tuesday at the Chula Vista Civic Center Library. At the rally, those opposing the program said it would harm a child's growth and development. They also demanded public hearings."If there are parents that want drag queens to come read books to their children, they have that right. They're the parents, we're not protesting their right," said Hodges. "But they should do that privately, on their own time, in their own place, on their own dollar."Supporters say the program promotes tolerance and acceptance. Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas called it "preposterous" to have a City Council vote for a one-hour reading program, which she said would not be canceled. "The City of Chula Vista is proud to celebrate the diversity of our community in all of our programs," Salas said in a statement. "The purpose of this event is to encourage children to use their imagination and creativity and most importantly to read."The tone of Wednesday's rally was much different than one held last week, in which tempers flared from the start. This time, only a handful of Drag Queen Story Hour supporters watched the rally from the side. Supporter Shelley Rudd, a retired teacher, said the drag queen reading program benefits children. "I think that it really helps those children who may be questioning, an opportunity to see that there are options and that it's okay," Rudd said. Last week, a different rally organized by a group called Mass Resistance got heated, with police stepping between both sides on two separate occasions. The Southern Poverty Law Center designated Mass Resistance an anti-LGBT hate group. Its California leader attended Wednesday's rally but did not speak at the podium. 2042

(KGTV) -- A group of parents from the Sweetwater Union High School district have started a petition hoping to push the district to allow their student-athletes to return to practice.As of Tuesday night, the petition has over 1,100 signatures. The parents want their children to follow all safety and social distancing guidelines, but they say the district has told them the kids can't practice. The petition gives examples of other school districts in San Diego County that have allowed their student athletes to return to practice. The petition even suggests that district officials are keeping sports shut down to balance Sweetwater's multi-million dollar budget deficit.Parents argue that not having sports is affecting their children's mental health and that not practicing could put them at a disadvantage once the seasons starts and when it comes time to get sports scholarships. CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista Police officer stabbed while on duty will be awarded the Congressional Badge of Bravery. On July 27, Officer David Sachs will be awarded the badge by United States Attorney for the Southern District of California Robert Brewer. The award, created in 2008, honors exceptional acts of bravery in the line of duty. On September 19 of 2017, Officer Sachs along with Officer Leo Banales and Chaplain Wes Anderson responded to a home on Monterey Avenue after receiving a report that a man’s neighbor threw a large piece of concrete over his fence, injuring the victim.RELATED: Chula Vista Police officer who shot man recovering from stabbing When officers arrived, the victim pointed out the suspect’s house. After knocking on the door, the suspect’s mother answered and invited the officers in.Police say, though they didn’t know at the time, the suspect, described as a 6-foot-tall man in his late 20s, was suffering from emotional or psychological distress.After stepping into the home’s kitchen, the suspect started attacking Sachs with a knife, stabbing him multiple times in the face, head and arm.Police say Sachs was able to knock the suspect to the ground while yelling “Knife! Knife! Knife!” to his partners.The suspect then lunged at Banales with a knife before he and Anderson went outside. According to police, Sachs drew his weapon and told the suspect to drop the knife before the suspect blocked the exit and attacked him again with the knife.RELATED: Officer stabbed, suspect shot three times in Chula Vista Police say Sachs then moved the suspect’s mother behind him for safety and shot the suspect. The suspect collapsed in the dining room after being struck.After hearing the shots, Anderson went back to the home’s front door to help. After more officers arrived, medical aid was given to the hospital who was taken to the hospital where he later died.Sachs was stabbed six times. Following seven months of recovery, he returned to full-duty and is still serving today.In May of 2018, Sachs was awarded a Medal of Valor and Purple Heart by the Chula Vista Police Department. 2141

CHICANO PARK (KGTV) -- A man was rushed to the hospital after being shot near Chicano Park Friday night, San Diego police said.A caller reported the man shot near Chicano Park on National Avenue and Dewey Street at 9:49 p.m. San Diego Police say officers arrived to find a large group gathered in a parking lot and a silver sedan trying to leave.The group fled, including the occupants of the silver sedan. Officers discovered a 15-year-old Hispanic male in the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.Officers started CPR on the teen before first responders arrived to take him to a nearby hospital. The teen died at the hospital, police said.Police say the teen has been identified but his name was not being released.San Diego police said the incident is being investigated as a homicide. K9 Griffen died Saturday after suffering from an unspecified medical condition.“It is with heavy hearts and a deep sense of loss that the Chula Vista Police Department says goodbye to Chula Vista Police Dog, K-9 Griffen,” the department said Monday.Griffen died surrounded by his handler, his handler’s family and other members of the K9 program.Griffen was a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois who worked to protect his handler, searched for suspects and made frequent appearances at community events. 590
