SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District is releasing an update on the next phases of its plan to reopen schools for in-person learning.The current plan to begin Phase Two for elementary school students is after the winter break on Jan. 4, said SDUSD Board President John Lee Evans.Middle and high Schools will start Jan. 25, at the beginning of the third academic quarter, said Evans.Elementary students will be divided between morning and afternoon sessions to allow for social distancing in the classroom. Middle and high school students will attend in person sessions, two days per week.All families will have the option to continue distance learning, said Evans."What can throw this plan off track? There are two main factors," said Evans. "Number one, lack of success of controlling the virus in phase one -- which we don't believe will happen; or two, external conditions of the virus in the community.""I would like to make an appeal to our community to assist us in reopening our schools," said Evans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The USNS Mercy leaves San Diego Friday for a deployment to Asia.The U.S. Navy's hospital ship will take part in a mission called Pacific Partnership, which was created after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The crew’s goal is to provide disaster relief and medical assistance to Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia."Our staff and team have come together to form a dynamic team of professionals and we are ready to execute this mission and engage with our partners throughout the Indo-Pacific," said Capt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This past March, as schools shut down and distance learning started, Richard Cowan and his family were one of hundreds who didn't have internet access."We were actually using mobile hot spots or venturing to the library," Cowan said. Then he learned about Connect2Compete, a program through Cox Communications that gave families free internet to start followed by a low cost plan. "We've been able to enhance, and better be prepared for school and a different curriculum that they're requiring now."Cox Communications Vice President of Government and Public Affairs, Chanelle Hawken, said it's just one of the ways they continued to help students stay connected for the fall. "We've put a lot of resources time and energy to connect kids."Cox also partnered with David Harp's Foundation, a music school for low income and at-risk kids. "For them, its even harder in this distance learning environment. They may not be getting the support of family members to help them stay online," Hawken said. They turned the East Village campus into a digital hub with free wifi for underprivilaged students."It's a new world I'll say and we're looking at ways to be creative. Just working one-on-one with school districts to see if they need devices because we have our grant with computers or to see if kids need a connection."They also had Cox wifi hotspots scattered throughout the county for free, at the start of the school year."It's been a community effort where people are chipping in to make sure kids are ready for back to school, I know its so stressful for parents right now," Hawken concluded. 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday in favor of providing employers the option to opt out of providing free birth control to their staff, based on religious beliefs.The 7-2 vote was polarizing."It's a huge win for religion," Pastor Andy Ballon said."We are extremely disappointed," Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California’s President/CEO, Jodi Hicks said.Pastor Ballon said the vote is a victory because it allows people of faith the freedom to not do something they don't believe in. "We believe that life starts at conception, so we believe we should have the right to chose to not provide or not pay for these contraceptives."Ballon said women have options to access birth control outside their healthcare plan provided through work.One of those options is Planned Parenthood."We know what [the vote] means. It will have a devastating effect on women trying to plan how they want to live their lives quite frankly," Hicks said.She explained those plans could involve pursuing higher education or a career.Hicks said 5.5 million women in California could have to pay if their employers opt out. Hicks said that leaves minorities much more vulnerable, saying many can't afford birth control."We are planning on campaigning to encourage those companies still cover access to birth control for women," she said.Pastor Ballon said it's not a fight against women. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy offloaded 5,100 pounds of seized cocaine Friday, worth an estimated wholesale value of million.The drugs were brought off Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Edmonton at Naval Base San Diego.The crews aboard the HMCS Edmonton were able to capture vessels smuggling the drugs in the Eastern Pacific in 49 days, detaining eight suspected smugglers.“Criminals don’t recognize international borders,” said Vice Adm. Linda Fagan, USCG Pacific area Commander. “I am particularly just excited to see this level of effort. It is a really hard mission to execute.”A U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement attachment was on board the Edmonton and the crews worked hand in hand as one team to make the drug busts.Once the drugs are offloaded, they will be turned over to the DEA. 837
