BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Major indices of China's large ports mostly pointed to better performance in April with increasing cargo throughput and exports volume, the Ministry of Transport said Wednesday.According to latest figures posted on the ministry's website, China's large sea ports and river ports saw rapid throughput growth in cargo, exported goods volume and containers from January to April.Passenger throughput via large ports, however, fell 18.5 percent from a year earlier to 295 million in the first four months of 2010, the ministry said.Large ports are classified in China as sea ports with an annual cargo throughput above 15 million tonnes and river ports with an annual cargo throughput above 10 million tonnes.From January to April, cargo throughput in those large ports jumped 20.2 percent year on year to about 2.48 billion tonnes, the ministry said.About 206.5 million tonnes of goods were exported via the large ports during the January-April period, up 27.2 percent from a year ago.Container throughput rose 22.4 percent year on year to 436.81 million TEUs in the first four months, according to the ministry.

URUMQI, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Internet services were resumed in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Friday, 10 months after a riot in Urumqi on July 5, the regional government said.In a document released by its press office, Xinjiang's regional government said Internet services were "fully resumed" in line with the region's needs for maintaining stability and boosting social and economic development.The move was also aimed at meeting the Xinjiang residents' requests for information, it said.Xinjiang has 7 million Internet users.The government expressed appreciation for the netizens' understanding and support when Internet connection, international long-distance calls and mobile phone text messages were cut in some areas of Xinjiang after the July 5 riot.Disruption of communication was aimed at cracking down on the riot quickly and prevent violence from happening again, as the riot was believed to have been orchestrated by separatists via the Internet, text message and long-distance telephone calls.Resumption of Internet services in Xinjiang has been a gradual process. Access to two leading news websites, xinhuanet.com and people.com.cn, was restored in December, followed by access to another two portal websites, sina.com.cn and sohu.com, on Jan. 10.Email services were resumed in March. FUZHOU, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan has called for concrete measures to promote the construction of the economic zone on the western side of the Taiwan Strait.Wang made the remarks during his two-day inspection tour to the southeastern Fujian Province that ended Friday.Wang also asked local departments of commerce, customs, quality inspection, finance and tourism to make efforts to support the construction of the economic zone.During his visit to Pingtan Island, the fifth largest island in China, Wang inspected a bridge under construction that will connect the island with the mainland, as well as industrial development and the tourism industry on the island.Wang also visited the Wuyi Mountain and some tourist attractions in Fuzhou city, and urged a sound development of local tourism industry.
