SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The floral tributes shut down by the pandemic, blossomed into reality Memorial Day at several national cemeteries.Susan Williams first met Gregory Torres in 1973 while he was in the Air Force navigator training program. While the relationship didn't last, she never forgot him."Funny, smart and dedicated. One of the best people I've ever known," said Williams, 71.In 1978, while stationed in Germany, Captain Torres died when his plane crashed during a training flight. One of those requests came from Williams. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Coast Guard Tuesday rescued a 62-year-old man from a fishing boat 72 miles off the coast of San Diego.The crew of the 95-foot boat, called the ‘Oceanside 95,” called the Coast Guard around 11:30 a.m. requesting assistance for a passenger experiencing symptoms of a stroke.Crews arrived on scene around 2:45 p.m. and were able to hoist the man into the Jayhawk helicopter when he was taken to the hospital.The man is said to be in stable condition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 21-year-old killed while driving across the trolley tracks near Encanto has been identified.The San Diego County Medical Examiner says Alex Garza, 21, was believed to be distracted, possibly on the phone, when he reportedly tried to drive his Toyota Prius across the tracks just before midnight at 60th Street and Imperial Avenue. The vehicle was struck by a trolley before it became pinned against a poll.San Diego Police and fire units responded to the scene where Garza was pronounced dead. 525

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Fleet Science Center is offering a program that helps San Diego students navigate their way through any challenges they face while distance learning.Participating students will have to go through a health screening before entering the building at Balboa Park.Once inside, classrooms are transformed into individual hubs. Students each have a workspace where they use their own electronic device to connect to their distance learning classrooms. Educators are there helping with any issues that may come up.Andia Pebdani, the Youth Engagement Manager for the Fleet Science Center, said the idea of the hubs came from families who needed help juggling the work life with schools being closed.“Some families don’t have the option at home, or it’s like, ‘I needed to do this so I can do my job, but I can also make sure my student is on the computer,’” said Pebdani.During breaks, educators work on different science activities with the kids or they get tours of different parts of their museum since their doors are still closed to the public.The cost for this program is 0-0 a week depending on whether you have a membership with the center.
