SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This Saturday, the City of San Diego invites all children to play in the mud.In a celebration of nature and friendship, “International Mud Day” encourages kids to get dirty together. First celebrated between Australia and Nepal in 2009, the holiday has spread to cities across the world.Saturday will mark San Diego’s 2nd Mud Day celebration. All children and their families are invited to Crown Point Park in Mission Bay from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.After a successful celebration in 2018, the City has expanded the event to include obstacle courses, nature crafts, and more. From mud forts to food trucks, there will be many ways to families to have fun getting dirty.Dr. Bronner’s Magic Foam Experience will make a special appearance, to make sure no one tracks mud back home.The event is free, but families are encouraged to register here. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Threats from President Donald Trump to move forward with ICE raids aren't stopping a Barrio Logan organization from patrolling the streets and alerting the community when agents are in their neighborhoods. Union Del Barrio is a 38-year-old organization. In the last year, they started the community patrols to warn neighbors of their rights, if ICE shows up at their door. Benjamin Prado is a member of Union Del Barrio. He says volunteers patrol in Logan Heights, Barrio Logan, Shelltown, City Heights and Linda Vista. Prado says they never interfere with the ICE agents doing their job, only document what they see. The organization is also training volunteers in other cities, including Los Angeles. Prado says they feel ICE shouldn't exist at all and that these patrols are to challenge the administration, trying to stop them from terrorizing and separating their families with deportations. On Saturday, Trump said the administration would move forward with ICE raids "fairly soon". Late Sunday afternoon, the president also tweeted in response to a New York Times article saying in part "people should not be entering the country illegally" while also praising the work of Border Patrol and others in law enforcement. Trump also insisted the wall is being built. So far, no word from the administration as to when the deportations will start. 1378

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The pinch of the partial shutdown on federal government agencies and employees approached a squeeze Wednesday as workers prepared for their first pay period without a paycheck. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees who are furloughed or working without pay during the government shutdown are anticipating an end to the political standoff. The partial shutdown, which took effect Dec. 21, forced 420,000 workers to continue their jobs without pay. 380,000 workers were furloughed nationwide. 5,000 of the affected workers are in San Diego County, according to Rep. Scott Peters' office, which cited the Association of Federal Government Workers. Border Patrol agents enforcing the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County are among the affected employees. So are TSA agents, including those who kept holiday travelers safe at Lindbergh Field. RELATED: No deal to end shutdown; Trump says 'could be a long time'Many San Diegans only noticed the impact of the shutdown by the closure of national parks including the Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma, and Joshua Tree National Park. However, more people may soon feel the change. Many departments and agencies are running out of carryover cash, Politico reports. Dozens of national parks and museums, including Smithsonian facilities, closed Wednesday as they ran out of money. Yosemite National Park limited entry due to problems with human waste and public safety. Visitors were told to use restrooms in nearby communities before entering the park. The Coast Guard is scaling back boating safety checks, mariner licensing, and fishing law enforcement, according to Politico. Tax filing season, which usually starts in January, may start later, and many IRS workers may be called to work without pay for filing season. The most recent pay period ended Dec. 22, with paychecks arriving Dec. 28. The next pay period ends Jan. 5, with the check due Jan. 11. There’s a possibility that check may never come. Workers may be paid retroactively but it would take an act of Congress. To make the financial picture even more grim for federal employees, President Trump issued an executive order Friday, freezing their pay for 2019. Their 2.1 percent hike was supposed to take effect this month. This year marks a few important milestones for families and survivors.A settlement announced one day before the three-year anniversary, meaning 0 million will go to victims and families.Also, Nevada’s Governor Steve Sisolak added two more to the list of people who died as a result of the shooting. She lost her eye and now three years later, has had seven surgeries and now has a prosthetic eye. She said because of the chaos of physically healing the past few years, this is the first anniversary where she’s been able to grieve more.“I was going through so many surgeries and having so much at the time of the first and second that it kind of kept my mind so busy and so focused on that, and I tried so hard not to feel but this year I feel it a lot more,” said Romo.Doctors thought Romo would lose her sight and speech, but she defied those odds. There is still a long road to recovery for her, but she’s thankful for the life she’s been blessed with. So when my friends said hey let’s go to the movies tonight, let’s go bowling, it was like I automatically knew I couldn’t do that. I knew I couldn’t be in that closed place,” said Huizar.Huizar added that the news of the settlement has added a little bit of closure this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three animal rights activists have been banned from SeaWorld San Diego following a demonstration at an orca show this year.A San Diego Superior Court order issued Thursday banned three protestors affiliated with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) from entering SeaWorld San Diego and Aquatica San Diego, SeaWorld said in a statement.Included in that ban were Ricky Rodriguez, Lyanne Fernandez, and Lisa Lange, PETA's senior vice president of communications.
