GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — On Wednesday, Diedre Rutherford of Grand Island said she received a massive package outside her home. Inside the package were hundreds of smaller packages, all addressed to people in Canada."This box was packed full. It was heavy," she said. "It's going to be expensive to ship it back."Eager to open what she thought might have been a gift from a family member, Rutherford rushed to open the package."I opened it up, and I initially thought that this packaging was packaging around whatever was stuck in the middle of this box," she said. "I kept digging, and no, there was nothing in there. Just more of these packages."When Rutherford realized the package must have been sent by mistake, she tried to return it to the post office, but she said it was denied."They said the box was addressed to you. You opened, it's yours," Rutherford said.Now, she's stuck with hundreds of little packages."It's like I've been hired to do something," she said.Melanie McGovern of the Better Business Bureau says Rutherford was likely the victim of a "reshipping scam," where a company will send a package to a random recipient and ask them to send it out to other people."A lot of times, you're never going to get reimbursed for the money that you spend shipping. You don't know what's in the packaging. It could be things that are illegal," McGovern said.McGovern says companies can get a hold of a victim's shipping information when they apply to things like stay at home warehouse jobs or online Secret Santa sign-ups."A lot of people fall for this scam, especially during the pandemic," she said. "We did see a little bit of an increase in this, especially in the beginning of the year."McGovern says anyone who receives a package that's been addressed to them that they didn't order should hold off on opening it right away."Check that return address. Look it up. See if it's a legitimate company or not," she said. "You don't want to end up on some weird mailing list like it sounds like she did in this situation. So keep track of that stuff."From now on, Rutherford said she's going to be extra careful when it comes to opening packages."I would warn people to do the same thing," she said. "Look at the return address on the box before you open it to see if it looks like it's from a company that has a name and that it sounds like it's from someplace instead of just a random warehouse in New Jersey."Raymond Williams, an inspector at the United States Postal Office, says anyone who receives a miscellaneous package should call the 24-7 USPS hotline at 1-877-876-2455. HAMPTON, Va. – Slavery in the United States began in Hampton Roads at Fort Monroe in Virginia, once known as Point Comfort, where the first enslaved Africans arrived in 1619.Psychiatrists say the horrors slaves endured in America – severe physical and mental abuse – has a psychological impact on their descendants 401 years later.“Fearfulness, I think, is what's passed on, in addition to the trauma,” said nationally renowned psychiatrist Dr. Dion Metzger. “That fear gets instilled into children because parents are trying to protect their children.”A study in Brain Sciences suggests trauma can be passed down through generations. Their research found “an accumulating amount of evidence of an enduring effect of trauma exposure to be passed to offspring transgenerationally via the epigenetic inheritance mechanism of DNA methylation alterations and has the capacity to change the expression of genes and the metabolome.”Dr. Metzger said it is possible that Black people are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder from what their ancestors endured.“Just because we didn't experience it, us learning about the history or even from family stories, it's the same thing,” she said.Metzger said the outcry in peaceful protests across the country can be therapeutic.“It's not going to be a quick fix, but us telling our stories is one big part of [healing],” said Dr. Metzger, who also encouraged therapy.“A lot of people think in order for you to suffer from PTSD, you have to be a victim,” said Dr. Metzger. “You can still have the same traumatic impact just from watching the video [of George Floyd’s death] and sometimes even greater if you identify with the person. So if you identify with the race of the person, you identify with their gender, you're more likely to have a trauma traumatic impact. So I always remind people that even if you were not there, but you’re watching that video, we're still counting that as a trauma. GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Several dozen students interrupted an event featuring actress Jenna Fischer at DePauw University Tuesday to protests recent racial incidents on and near campus.Many of them held signs with things claiming they are "afraid for their lives" after recent events. Fischer, star of the sicoms "The Office" and "Splitting Up Together" was at the university to discuss her new book, "The Actor's Life: A Survivor's Guide."University Spokesman Ken Owen, who was moderating the lecture with Fischer, said about 15 minutes into the program a group of students got up and began interrupting the event whistling, shouting and saying they were afraid for their safety on campus because of the recent racial incidents. Last week, a hateful message was found written in a bathroom at the university. The message, which read " All ******* must die -KKK," was written on a bathroom wall of the Inn at DePauw, a public building on campus. Another anti-Semitic and homophobic messages were also found. The video above was captured during the Tuesday evening protests by Shannon Samson. Another event being investigated by the university involves a hateful slur written in rocks at the DePauw nature park, which is owned by the university. Owen said there was a meeting with the school president Tuesday over the events and that have happened up until that point and they expect more meetings in the future. DePauw University issued the following statement on social media after the event.  1573

Harvey Weinstein turned himself in to authorities Friday morning and was arrested and arraigned on charges of first- and third-degree rape and committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's office.The charges stem from incidents with two separate women in 2013 and 2004, the district attorney said in a statement, and were the result of a joint investigation between police and the Manhattan District Attorney's office.Weinstein's attorney Benjamin Brafman told reporters outside the courthouse that his client plans to plead not guilty to all of the charges.As part of the agreement between Brafman and the DA's office, Weinstein's bond was set at million. Hours after Amazon instructed its employees to remove the short-video sharing app TikTok from their devices -- the company back stepped.The online retail giant says the email was sent in error and there is no change to amazon's policy regarding TikTok.In the email sent to employees Friday morning and obtained by CNN, Amazon said that due to "security risks, the TikTok app is no longer permitted on mobile devices that can access Amazon email."A TikTok spokesperson said Amazon "did not communicate to us before sending their email, and we still do not understand their concerns."Politicians say the app could undermine national security given its ties to China.Cybersecurity experts have been more cautious about that assessment.TikTok is owned by the world's most valuable startup, a Chinese company named Bytedance. 828
