SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former La Jolla restaurant owner convicted of raping multiple women was sentenced on Tuesday to 40 years in prison.On a live stream to the courtroom while sitting in jail, Daniel Dorado was read his term after several women gave their victim impact statements.The former owner of Voce Del Mare was found guilty last December on 20 counts related to rape and sexual assault of four victims who were unconscious and intoxicated. ABC10 News broke the story two years ago when he was charged with drugging and raping women, sometimes at his restaurant.Fighting back tears on Tuesday, one victim described her trauma from meeting Dorado after answering an ad on Craigslist for a hostess position. "Years after the assault, I still don't feel safe going to job interviews in-person, alone. I don't feel safe to do outdoor activities alone. I can't tolerate being around men. Not even family," she stated."He is an evil individual," said another woman who added, "I simply went on a date with him and ended up getting sexually assaulted by him for hours in a hotel room where I was unconscious."One woman who was named as a victim defended Dorado on Tuesday and said that she was even friends with him. She accused detectives of manipulating her to testify against her will and appear confused about a possible assault. She told the judge, "Your honor, Mr. Dorado never raped me. I never went to the police. I never filed a police report. In fact, I declined a restraining order against Mr. Dorado and I told detectives that I did not want to press charges."Dorado addressed the courtroom and denied any wrongdoing. He added, "I have spoken the truth since the very first day that this all began. I did not skip town. I did not make faces to the accusers. I am still in shock by what has happened." He maintains his innocence and has said that every sexual encounter was consensual."The total term of imprisonment is 40 years. I don't mind saying [that] I believe this is the maximum I can impose under the law," the judge told the courtroom. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego-based U.S. Navy SEALs have been charged in connection with the 2017 execution of a detainee in Iraq.SEAL officials told the Navy Times that Lt. Jacob "Jake" Portier faces an Article 32 hearing on suspicion of covering up a string of war crimes allegedly committed by Special Operations Chief Edward "Eddie" Gallagher.The Naval Criminal Investigative Service probe involves the death of a wounded Islamic State fighter near Mosul, Iraq in May 2017, the Navy Times reported.Prosecutors allege Gallagher stabbed and killed the wounded man, posed for a photograph next to the body and opted to complete his re-enlistment ceremony next to the corpse, bringing "discredit upon the armed forces."Gallagher is also accused of shooting two non-combatants in separate incidents near Mosul, the Navy Times reported.An MCAS Miramar spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.Gallagher was arrested on Sept. 11 and is being detained at the Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, under Rules for Court-Martial 305, the Navy Times reported.Portier, who is accused of dereliction of duty, was not present at the time of the alleged killing, the Navy Times reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Border Patrol agent was sentenced Wednesday for trying to smuggle drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border while on duty in 2016.Noe Lopez, 37, of Chula Vista, was sentenced to 70 months in prison for attempting to smuggle methamphetamine and cocaine in exchange for cash. He pled guilty to the charges in June 2017.Investigators say the former Border Patrol agent agreed to pick up backpacks containing the drugs from the north side of the border while on duty. Undercover DEA agents used substances resembling drugs in the backpack drops.RELATED: Border Patrol agent arrested in North San Diego County on drug , weapons chargesIn a conversation with an undercover agent, Lopez discussed the area known as "Goat Canyon" as a preferred location, according to investigators, saying "Honestly, the thing is that there aren’t—there aren’t any cameras. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A foot pursuit between police and a suspect ended in an officer-involved shooting in the Logan Heights neighborhood Monday.An officer was trying to contact a 30-year-old Hispanic male, later identified as Enrique Aguilar, at about 3:20 p.m. over what he believed to be a narcotics violation, according to San Diego Police Capt. Tom Underwood. Aguilar fled, prompting a foot pursuit in the area of 3400 National Avenue, police say.Police said during the foot pursuit, Aguilar revealed a handgun.VIDEO: Video captures officer-involved shooting in Logan HeightsPAST OIS INCIDENTS: DA releases body cam footage, reviews several officer-involved shootingsOfficers say they ordered Aguilar to drop his weapon. Police said at one point, Aguilar pointed the handgun at officers, prompting an exchange of gunfire.Aguilar was struck at least once. He suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.Neither officer, one a 24-year veteran and the other a 2-year veteran, was injured in the shooting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A camp in Vista is giving kids a place to cope with the loss of a loved one, along with others on the same journey.Experience Camps provide boys and girls whose parent, sibling or primary caregiver has died, with a program that helps build confidence, encourages laughter and allows them to navigate their grief through friendship, teamwork, athletics, and the common bond of loss.The nonprofit provides the experience free for families. "My mom she was really, really nice. I loved her with all my heart. When she passed, it was devastating," said 13-year-old Dylan from San Diego.Dylan's mother died of breast cancer. "It was really tough, but once I got here it was really good to know that other people had the same experience," said Dylan.This is Dylan's third year at camp. He and others are gaining coping mechanisms to navigate their grief better. "The common experience we all have is grief, and I think that's the strongest bond between all of us," said Amit Sura, a camp counselor. A typical camp day includes two activity periods, such as volleyball, tennis or arts & crafts. The third morning period is focused on different techniques in the bereavement toolkit, built to help the campers identify, express, and understand their feelings. Later in the day campers take part in a camp-wide activity, such as relay races or a hike up a nearby mountain. The camp comes together again during free swim, dinner, and an evening activity before retiring to their bunks."Today we did a mindfulness activity, talked about sitting with emotions like anger, happiness, sadness," said Sura. "When they're here, and everybody's sharing their experiences and their emotions, it's a bond that's unbreakable."Experience Camps has five locations across the country, serving boys and girls.Families can register in November.The nonprofit relies on donations to send children to camp for free, you can donate here. 1940
