CARTAGENA, Colombia, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Sunday held talks with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe in the northern Colombian port city of Cartagena.     Xi first transferred the sincere regards of Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao to Uribe, and expressed his thanks to Uribe for specially coming here to meet the Chinese delegation. Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping meets with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe in Cartagena, a port city of Colombia, on Feb. 15, 2009These moves reflected the deep friendship between the two peoples, said Xi, who arrived in Colombia Saturday for a three-day visit.     He said bilateral relations have made great headway in recent years under the care of the two countries' leaders.     In November, President Hu reached consensus with Uribe on deepening bilateral sincere and friendly political ties, strengthening mutually beneficial, win-win and practical cooperation, increasing civil exchanges, and boosting multilateral coordination and cooperation, Xi said.     The consensus is the principle and direction for the development of bilateral ties in the following period of time, he added.     Xi said next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations, and bilateral ties will enter a mature period that enjoys full-scale development.     He said both sides should seize this opportunity to fully implement the consensus reached by the two countries' leaders and focus on the work in the following four fields:     -- to increase mutual trust in political affairs, deepen their sincere friendship, and care each other's concerns;     -- to make use of the advantage of mutual complementarity, expand bilateral trade, and promote trade balance;     -- to broaden cooperation fields, actively explore new fields and ways for mutually beneficial cooperation, and meet the new demands of common development;     -- to encourage investment and cooperation in various forms and promote the level of bilateral practical cooperation, with the Chinese government encouraging and supporting Chinese companies to carry out trade, economic and investment activities in Colombia.     For his part, Uribe asked Xi to convey the Colombian people's greetings to President Hu and the Chinese people.     Colombia attaches great importance to its relations with China and has always cherished friendly feelings for China, he said, adding that the Colombian government and people have very much looked forward to Xi's visit and are satisfied with the growth of bilateral relations in recent years.     Uribe recalled last year's signing of the bilateral investment protection agreement which he and President Hu had witnessed, saying it is a notable sign of the development of cooperation between Colombia and China.     Uribe expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its assistance to Colombia and voiced appreciation for China's accession into the Inter-American Development Bank, which he believes will help strengthen Colombia-China relations.     Chinese enterprises are warmly welcomed to invest in and trade with Colombia, which has rich natural resources and a steadily-growing economy, he said.     Noting that Colombia is impressed by the efforts China made to cope with the global financial crisis and stimulate economic growth, Uribe expressed his belief that China is an engine of the world economy and its development and growth pace are key to a quick recovery of the world economy from the financial crisis.     Colombia stands ready to broaden its cooperation with China and push their relationship to new heights, he said.     Colombia is the third leg of Xi's six-nation tour. He has already visited Mexico and Jamaica and will also visit Venezuela, Brazil and Malta.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Tuesday called for increased efforts of democratic parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce to promote the development of a poverty-stricken city in southwest China.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the call at a working conference on supporting the construction of Bijie, a city in Guizhou Province.     Bijie was approved by the State Council, China's cabinet, in 1988 as a trial zone featuring ecological environment protection and construction, development and poverty-alleviation.     Jia said the significant economic and social achievement made in Bijie over the past 20 years exemplifies the enormous advantages of the political system of multi-party cooperation and the political consultation system under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     Jia outlined three major tasks for Bijie's future development: development and poverty alleviation, ecological construction and population control must be firmly grasped.     He also called for efforts to explore new ways to develop the region.     Efforts should be made to pursue leap-forward development in both economy and society in the region, he said.     In the same meeting, Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, said the construction of Bijie trial zone had made significant phase achievements.     The region, where the poor once struggled to have adequate food and clothing, was on its way to becoming a place where the people can generally lead a well-off life, he said.     Over the past two decades, people from the democratic parties offered enormous support to develop the hilly hinterland region that is home to more than 20 ethnic minorities.     They helped to contribute to local education programs, training of migrant workers, building local medical institutions, constructing hydropower stations and helped tackle prevailing ecological problems including desertification.     The CPPCC is a patriotic united front organization of the Chinese people, serving as a key mechanism for multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC, and a major manifestation of socialist democracy.

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, will conclude its annual session Thursday morning.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the 11th CPPCC National Committee, is to deliver a speech at the closing ceremony.     The China National Radio, China Radio International and China Central Television will live broadcast the event.     The country's major news websites, including www.xinhuanet.com run by the Xinhua News Agency, www.people.com.cn run by the People's Daily and www.china.com.cn run by the China International Publishing Group will cover the closing ceremony to be held in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     The annual session of the 11th CPPCC National Committee started on March 3. During the session, political advisors deliberated the work report of the Standing Committee of the 11th CPPCC National Committee and a report on how the suggestions and proposals from CPPCC members were handled since the last session.     They also attended the the Second Session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) as nonvoting delegates. BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party chief of China's Health Ministry has been replaced, the ministry's official website said Wednesday.     The post of secretary of the ministry's leading Party members' group, formerly held by Gao Qiang, 65, was taken over by Zhang Mao,55.     The website didn't give a reason for the change, only saying that the central government made the decision out of "work necessity and prudent study."     Zhang, from east China's Shandong Province, had been vice mayor of Beijing and vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission previously, during which time he was in charge of health system reform work, the website said.     Gao had been vice finance minister and deputy secretary-general of the State Council (Cabinet). He was appointed Party chief and vice minister of the Health Ministry during the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak in 2003 after former health minister Zhang Wenkang was sacked over the crisis. Gao became minister in April 2005.     In June 2007, Gao's post of health minister was taken by Chen Zhu, who is not a member of the Communist Party of China. He then began to act as the vice minister and remained the Party chief.
