A Detroit police officer who was recorded punching a naked woman at a Detroit hospital has been suspended with pay pending an investigation.According to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has also started a criminal investigation into the officer's use of force.The incident started with a call around 6:45 p.m. local time on Wednesday. When officers arrived, they saw a naked woman on the street. Officers put her in a police car and took her to Detroit Receiving Hospital. According to Craig, the woman was not agitated during the entire ride to the hospital, and officers were able to cover her up. Craig said the officers did not handcuff her.Once at the hospital, the woman threatened hospital staff and security staff, spit on several employees, bit a security officer twice and tried to bite another police officer.Craig says an officer struck the woman several times, ignoring the Detroit Police Department's de-escalation tactics."The suspect had her back turned but the officer continued to punch," Craig said. "We have grave concerns for the officer's action."The department is investigating the incident, on top of the prosecutor's office, and they are in the process of downloading body camera videos. According to Craig, the officer is an 18-year veteran of the force, is a corporal, and has a good record. He hasn't had a complaint since 2015 and not does not have a "category one use of force incident"— when a use of force incident results in injury.The woman was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and had some minor contusions but is in stable condition.Officers have interviewed several hospital staff, but are in the process of trying to locate the person who took the video showing the use of force.According to Craig, the officer did undergo their mental health and emotional survival training twice in 2016 and once in 2015. He said the department has "above average" training when it comes to people who have a mental illness. 2018

A California police officer was charged Wednesday in connection with a fatal shooting at an Oakland-area Walmart store in April.San Leandro Police Officer Jason Fletcher was charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with an incident where he fatally shot 33-year-old Steven Taylor on April 18.According to the Alameda County District Attorney's office, a security guard at the store called police when Taylor tried to leave San Leandro Walmart with a baseball bat and a tent without paying.Fletcher responded to the call and approached Taylor as he entered the store. The officer tried to grab the baseball bat from Taylor, and when he couldn't get control of the bat he drew his stun gun.After firing the stun gun, Taylor stumbled forward with the bat sitll in his hand. According to body camera footage, Fletcher repeatedly asked Taylor to drop the bat. Fletcher then fired his gun once, a shot that proved to be fatal.In its charging statement, the District Attorney's office, claimed that Taylor "posed no threat of imminent deadly force or serious bodily injury" to the officers or anyone else in the store because he had "clearly experienced the shock of the taser as he was leaning forward over his feet and stumbling forward."Fletcher's lawyer, Michael Rains, told the San Francisco Chronicle that he was "very disappointed" that the officer had been charged and that the charges were "undeserved."The decision to file the criminal complaint was made after an intensive investigation and thorough analysis of the evidence and the current law," Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley said.Lee Merritt, an attorney for Taylor's family, told NBC News that Taylor was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the shooting.Fletcher will be arraigned on Sept. 15 at a county courthouse in Dublin, California. 1845

A California coffee shop refused service to a customer last week after he insulted a Muslim woman and her headscarf.According to KTLA-TV, the video was shot inside of a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf store in Riverside, California on Friday. The video opens with a man standing in line for coffee."I said, 'Is this Halloween or something?" the man says."Why did you say that?" the woman filming asks."Why wouldn't I? Richard Shelby, R-Ala., chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.The stalemate is politically risky for all sides heading into the fall election, which will decide not only the presidency, but also control of Congress.While nationwide coronavirus cases appear to be at a plateau, there is still widespread economic hardship and social unease in homes, schools and businesses affected by closures. A Florida mother says her daughter was denied lunch on the first day of school because she didn't have money to pay a 15 cent debt.Kimberly Aiken told WKMG-TV in Orlando that her daughter, a sophomore at University High School in Orange City, Florida, was told that she owed 15 cents when she went through the lunch line on the first day of school this week. When she told the cashier that she didn't have any money on her, the cashier allegedly threw the food away.Aiken's daughter did not eat anything for the rest of the school day.According to CBS News, Aiken signed her daughter up for a free and reduced-cost lunch program at University High School. However, the program hadn't taken effect yet. Aiken suspects that the 15 cent deficit was carried over from last year.A spokesperson for the Volusia County Public Schools said the district has contacted the family directly about the issue.Aiken's daughter reportedly brought a quarter to school the next day to cover the deficit and was told the shortage had been taken care of.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W.
