On Thursday, for the second straight day, the U.S. recorded more than 3,000 deaths linked to the coronavirus.According to a database kept by the COVID Tracking Project, 3,067 across the country were confirmed to have died of complications from COVID-19 on Thursday. A spike in deaths typically trails a few weeks behind spikes in new cases and hospitalizations — both of which have been steadily increasing without respite for more than a month. Since Nov. 1, the seven-day average of new COVID-19 has exploded from 80,538 a day to 205,425 a day. In that same span, the number of people hospitalized with the virus has more than doubled from 47,531 to 107,248.Those extra patients are placing an enormous workload on hospitals throughout the country. Hospitals across the country are currently operating at maximum capacity, forcing doctors to treat patients in overflow areas like parking garages. Several states, like Indiana, have already mandated a temporary ban on elective surgeries in the hopes of lightening the load on health care workers.Unlike previous spikes in the spread of the virus, the current wave is not limited to one region of the country. According to the COVID Tracking Project, cases are rising or staying level in 43 states plus Washington, D.C. Thankfully, the impending authorization of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine offers some light at the end of the tunnel. (KGTV) - Anyone browsing through 101 Marketplace in Oceanside will find an assortment of items for sale on the shelves and show floor.The antique and consignment store opened just two weeks ago amid a business landscape struck by the pandemic. But owner, Roy Cisneros is optimistic about the future."If today is the worst day, tomorrow has got to be better," Cisneros said. Cisneros describes himself as naturally optimistic. That optimism has helped him get to where he is now."We've been homeless for two years, me, my wife, and my kids," Cisneros said. Cisneros, a father of five, says he says it didn't take much to fall into homelessness. "You get behind in rent, that's all it takes, really, and then you are living in hotels."He says they hit rock bottom in 2019 when his wife and his kids had to stay in a shelter."We were like, 'You get in the shelters, I'll sleep in the car, we'll figure this out, we'll save some money that way,'" Cisneros said.At one point, Cisneros worked as many as three jobs at one time to make ends meet and save up just enough."I had saved up a little bit of money from 2019; we purchased a little tiny trailer, we stayed in the trailer for about six months," he said.In August, he discovered that space on 101 S Coast Highway was available and affordable. Cisneros says it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. Though he heard of businesses struggling and closing because of the pandemic, Roy decided to bet on the days ahead."We took all of our savings, we sold the trailer, we got the store, and we're doing it," he said.Cisneros says he and his family are currently still living in a hotel, but he says that could change very soon."If you keep trying, eventually you'll get there," he said.Roy says they plan to give back to their community. They plan to donate some of their profits to a north county organization that helps the homeless. Cisneros says he will also take donated items to be sold, and the profits from that sale will also be donated. 2018

Of all the campaign slogans for 2020, Allison Ali is following motherly advice from her childhood.“My Mama always said, ‘if you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice,’” she said. “So, it’s put up or shut up.”Ali is taking those wise words on the road and also taking voters to the polls for free.“It’s important to me, because everybody needs to be heard,” she said.This election season, Ali is one of hundreds of people working for the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America during a campaign called “Roll to the Polls.”“We have a real opportunity to impact the elections,” said NACA CEO Bruce Marks.Marks’ team has 100 vans in Atlanta and 50 more in Houston with a goal of getting 100,000 voters from their houses to their polling locations free of charge.“It is very emotional because we’ve been through a lot,” Marks said of these free rides. “We’ve seen the voter suppression and we’ve seen how people’s rights are taken away. So, it’s crucial that everybody’s voice is heard.”Across the country, rideshare apps, colleges and even some concerned citizens are offering voters free rides to the election sites.While some political science experts warn that free rides could be used as a way to manipulate voters, others are calling it a sign of inspiration.“I want to do my part, honestly, to get them out,” said Atlanta-based voter Pamela Chaney, a self-described vibrant senior.Chaney says this election is the most crucial of her lifetime and that’s why she’s now thinking about volunteering to drive voters to polls, especially those in her community, where public transportation isn’t an option.“A lot of people probably want to come out, but they don’t have the means; transportation. They’re probably elderly,” she said.According to the American Association of Retired People, 71% of Americans over the age of 65 voted during the last presidential election, a group Ali hopes to steer clear from any of kind of voter suppression.“We have people who think their votes aren’t going to count,” she said. “They don’t think the mail is going to get their in time. That’s a scary thing.”While behind the wheel, Ali is still following her mother’s advice and driving down a road that others helped pave the way.“We have ancestors that fought for us to be able to come out here and vote,” she said. “This election for me is very important.” 2355

Not just because it can help slow the spread of the virus, but can also help you get to where you need to be, and it’s a trend that could continue to grow.“If you don’t have that test, you may not be able to allowed to enter the country or state, be forced into quarantine, or even be fined a fee both for testing and for non-compliance for the requirements,” said Dr. Kelly Cawcutt, Assistant Professor of Medicine & Infectious Diseases of the University of Nebraska Medical Center.It’s becoming more common to have paperwork proving you’ve had a negative COVID-19 test just days before your arrival to a destination overseas, and states could soon follow suit.“Several states are starting to ask for very similar requests where you’ve had a negative COVID test within the last 3-5 days, or you’ve been in a full quarantine either on arrival, or you pay for a test on arrival,” said Cawcutt.Proving you’ve tested negative can help slow the spread, including in areas that can’t afford to pay the price of an outbreak.“Some of the areas that for vacation, maybe smaller areas, and they may not have a health care system that can maintain an outbreak brought in by travelers,” said Cawcutt.So if you’re traveling, whether for work or vacation, it’s essential to lookup that pandemic related information before you even reach that spot.“Really vetting out what you’re doing, where you’re going, and what the requirements are both for travel but also for the actual location you’re planning to attend could be things to think about and plan ahead for in ways that we haven’t routinely had to plan,” said Cawcutt.“I would look to see if there are a lot of cases in that area and really reevaluate whether you want to go or not, if you don’t have to go and there is a lot of coronavirus things spread there, I would seriously reconsider it,” said Anne O’Keefe, Senior Epidemiologist with the Douglas County Health Department.It’s also critical to remember that getting test results back can take a few days, so planning ahead is crucial in fighting against this deadly pandemic.“You don’t want to go somewhere and make other people you’re visiting, whether its family, your co-workers, or business colleagues. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — A vehicle slammed into a power pole in Oceanside and flipped over early Monday, leaving locals without power and forcing some evacuations.The driver careened into the power pole in the 220 block of N. El Camino Real at about 3:30 a.m. The driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.The power pole remained upright but was leaning over a nearby mobile home park, threatening some homes. Those homes have been evacuated and power to most of the park has been shut off.SDG&E crews were out to assess the damage Monday. The outage affected at least 180 people. Crews expect to restore power by 4 p.m.It's not clear what caused the driver to lose control. The driver reportedly told Oceanside Police they were trying to avoid hitting a coyote. 785
