WESTLAKE, La. -- A fire broke out at a chemical plant in Westlake, Louisiana, as Hurricane Laura moved out of the state. Louisiana State Police responded to the scene Thursday and motorists were being advised not to travel on I-10 through Westlake as crews fought to put out the flames.State police say the fire involved a chlorine leak that originated from a BioLab chemical manufacturing facility.The BioLab plant was built in 1979 and manufactures trichloroisocyanuric acid, chlorinating granules and other chemicals used in such household cleaners as Comet bleach scrub and pool chlorine powder, The Associated Press reports. Trichloroisocyanuric acid and chlorine are potentially acutely toxic to people and animals if ingested or inhaled.As a result of the fire, residents in the Westlake, Moss Bluff and Sulphur area were advised to shelter in place until further notice, close their doors and windows, and turn off their air conditioning units.In a statement obtained by KATC, KIK Custom Products said the fire at their facility was the result of damage from the hurricane and a specialized team has been deployed to mitigate the impact of the incident. 1171

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The hurricane season continues to be active with the formation of a new tropical storm and a depression in the last 12 hours.Tropical depression 17 formed Sunday night in the Atlantic and became Tropical Storm Paulette just before 11 a.m. Monday.The storm has 40 mph winds with higher gusts and is moving west, northwest at 3 mph.Paulette is the earliest forming 16th named storm on record, breaking an old record set by Philippe on September 17, 2005, according to hurricane expert Philip Klotzbach.A slow-motion toward the northwest or north-northwest is expected tonight. Paulette is then forecast to move a little faster and generally westward on Tuesday and Wednesday.Early indications are it may curve before it reaches the Bahamas, but we will keep an eye on it just in case. With COVID-19 cases surging across most of the country, teachers are weighing whether it’s safe for them to return to the classroom while at the same time, trying to make sure their students don’t slip through the cracks because of the virus.In a virtual town hall-style meeting, four educators from across the country gathered to share their thoughts, concerns and excitement about the upcoming school year. The overriding theme: parents and students will need to be flexible.“We’re going to ask you for grace for this entire year. We want to teach your children, but when we voice concerns it’s not because we’re lazy and we don’t want to work, it’s because we want to make sure our families are safe, too,” said Rachel Sandoval, an elementary school teacher in Colorado.Sandoval’s school was forced to close back in March because of COVID-19. She knows her students have lost out on valuable in-person learning time because of the virus, but she’s also worried that gathering students back in a classroom setting this coming fall could give the virus a perfect environment to spread in.“We can’t do the same thing we did last year. The world has changed. Everything has changed,” she said.Her concern was echoed by other teachers who joined the virtual town hall.Steph MacPhail teachers 5th grade in Minnesota. Some kids don’t have adequate internet access or access to a computer that they can use to access online classes.“We need to make sure kids are still staying engaged while at the same time dealing with these environmental factors. However, officials warn that counting the ballots could take days.In Bucks County, a heavily populated suburban county near Philadelphia has a population of about 628,000 people. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the county by a narrow lead with a few thousand votes. This time around, both presidential campaigns have been courting the suburban vote, and the suburban Philadelphia counties are considered critical. Polls across the state closed at 8 p.m. EST, and now the more than 2 million mail-in ballots the state has received can now be counted. “We sent out about 200,000 ballots, which is 10 times more than we did four years ago, and we've gotten back somewhere in the area 160,000,” said Bob Harvie, Bucks County, Pennsylvania Board of Elections Chairman. “We still have mail coming in obviously today that we can accept. We had U.P.S. dropping off some ballots.
