SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Friday, a San Diego woman recounted how she was sexually abused by her priest at St. Jude when she was young, hoping it would encourage others to come forward.Walking up to the church to speak she said she felt a wave of emotions, "My chest was heavy, my stomach was sick. I was catching my breath." She told 10News her name is Cynthia Ann Doe, keeping her last name private, wearing a scarf over her head and dark sunglasses, concealing part of her identity for fear of retaliation. She said she could still see the rectory, where Monsignor Gregory Sheridan lived, next to the church. In it's place is a parking lot.She depicted what her life was like when she was just five-years-old, "I had no one to protect me, my mother and my father divorced when I was four, my brother died months before that." She said they lived inside a brightly painted yellow apartment building, sitting just across the street. Ann Doe said she clung to her faith and her family was honored when Monsignor Sheridan took favor in their company. Alone in his bedroom, her lawyer said he violated her with his fingers.She said at that age she couldn't process what happened, "that you are worthless dirty, a bad person, so bad that even God must not love you, because your priest hurt you and made you feel nasty.""I'm asking anyone male or female who may be struggling with what happened to them by Father Sheridan to come forward and be heard," she said.That call growing louder as more cases arise across the country. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fed up homeowners' associations are now turning to a local licensed private investigator for help with catching homeowners who are breaking HOA rules by renting out their homes on short-term vacation rental sites such as Airbnb, VRBO and Craigslist.  “I admittedly watched a lot of Magnum, P. I. growing up,” jokes Nick Bradley of San Diego’s Bradley Investigative Services.  In the last 6 months, Bradley has taken on a new field of investigative work. He and his associates are being hired by HOAs to investigate homeowners and tenants who are violating HOA bylaws and CC&Rs that prohibit turning units into short-term vacation rentals.   Bradley gave 10News an exclusive interview about this new area of detective work. He declined to offer us specifics about how he executes his investigations into short-term rental violators. We ask, “Do you ever pose as a guest and do you do surveillance work?” Bradley replies, “No comment.” “My initial thought was [to laugh],” says San Diego attorney Dan Zimberoff. He represents homeowners and has previously represented HOAs. Zimberoff thinks it’s an extreme measure for HOAs to hire private investigators, but he understands why there’s so much passion over short-term rentals. “I think what makes this issue a little different [from others] is the dollars at stake, especially in San Diego. Some of these units can go for multiple hundreds of dollars a night or thousands of dollars. People care,” he adds.  According to Airbnb, San Diego is the second ranking city in the state for Airbnb guests, after Los Angeles. Per Airbnb, in 2017 there were 537,000 guest arrivals in San Diego, generating 0 million in host income. “Right now, it’s too lucrative for [homeowners] to not do this,” says Bradley. The short-term rental fight in America’s finest city continues to be ugly. The city attorney has deemed short-term rentals illegal, per code. Meanwhile, the city council is delaying discussions over how to regulate them. Even so, certain HOAs have rules prohibiting them. The fines for violators can be astronomical. “It’s been ,000 per occurrence in some situations,” adds Bradley. If fines don’t work, court is another option. In 2012, The Mark condominium owners association filed a lawsuit against Thomas Stevens, a former condo owner, accusing him of violating the association’s policies about short-term rentals. The campaign commercial presents itself as a retort to a recent DeMaio ad that questioned Issa's dedication to President Trump. Issa's ad turns that around. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeowners in Chula Vista's Eastlake III Community Association are fighting back against proposed parking updates for the HOA. If passed neighbors would be required to park their cars in the garage before parking in their driveway or on the street.The Board of Directors distributed proposed updates to the Community Association Handbook for a homeowner review and comment; and will vote on Tuesday, August 20.Among the proposed changes:Street parking is permitted only after all garage spaces, and driveway spaces, are utilized to its maximum designed capacityThe Association's management company is permitted to perform a garage inspection of a residence to ensure compliance with the Association's governing documentsHomeowner Jose Esquer believes an inspection would be an invasion of people's property."They seem to want the right to inspect your garage, and that's private property. What I have in my garage shouldn't be anybody's business, but whoever is inside my house. I have a problem with them trying to police what we do once inside our house," said Esquer. Becky Niemiec already parks her car in the garage but still believes the changes would be an overstep. "We don't have attics, we don't have basements, we have no storage, people should be able to use their garage however they want to," said Niemiec.Niemiec says the issue has drawn a lot of debate on Nextdoor. She says while some argue the changes could help beautify the neighborhood, she believes that group is in the minority.
