CNS note: EEOC identified store as located in La Mesa, but store is actually in San Carlos neighborhood of San Diego.SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Albertsons has agreed to pay 0,000 to settle a discrimination lawsuit alleging the manager of an Albertsons supermarket in the San Carlos neighborhood harassed employees for speaking Spanish on the job, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Tuesday.The EEOC's lawsuit alleged a store manager was allowed to harass employees at the Lake Murray Boulevard Albertsons in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on national origin.According to the complaint filed in San Diego federal court, employees were not allowed to speak Spanish even while on breaks, or when conversing with Spanish-speaking customers.In addition to the monetary damages, which the EEOC said will go to "a class of affected employees," Albertsons has agreed to review and possibly revise its discrimination policies and procedures and provide training to employees and managers, with an emphasis on language discrimination.Alberstons will also be required to submit reports to the EEOC and keep records demonstrating compliance with a consent decree settling the suit."The EEOC commends Albertsons for agreeing to meaningful and comprehensive measures to correct this situation," said Anna Park, regional attorney for the EEOC's Los Angeles District, whose jurisdiction includes San Diego County."It is important for employers to train employees and make clear that their use of language in the workplace should not impact one group over another."Christopher Green, director of the EEOC's San Diego office, said, "Given the nature of an increasingly diverse workforce, employers should be mindful that the imposition of restrictive language policies may not comply with federal law." 1864

Cliff Robinson, a former UConn star and longtime top sixth man in the NBA, has died. His death was confirmed by UConn. No cause of death was given, though former Huskies coach Jim Calhoun said Robinson had a stroke 2 1/2 years ago. Nicknamed Uncle Cliffy, Robinson played 18 seasons in the NBA and helped the Portland Trail Blazers reach two NBA Finals. Before that, he was the centerpiece of Calhoun’s early teams at UConn. City of San Diego workers on the taxpayer dime were doubling the hours worked on their timecards and getting paid for it anyway. The revelation is part of a damaging new audit set to be released Friday. "Quite frankly, we're appalled," Johnnie Perkins, a city deputy chief operating officer, said in a press conference called Thursday. The audit found the a unit of 17 workers in a unit of public utilities department were working an average 3.6 hours per day, but putting eight hours on their timecards - and supervisors were approving them. The unit is charged with replacing faulty cement water meter covers and water meter boxes at homes and business across the city of San Diego. "We need to make sure that we're changing what our expectations are not just for those that are on the front line repairing our lids and boxes," Perkins said, "but for our midlevel and senior managers, what do we expect in terms of how they are going to be evaluated or held accountable for their performance, or in this case, lack thereof?"The investigation comes just months after City Auditor Eduardo Luna's department found that the public utilities department sent erroneously high water bills to nearly 3,000 San Diego families. Perkins said reforms are currently being installed. The announcement came one day after city public utilities director Vic Bianes announced his retirement, effective Thursday. Matt Vespi, an assistant director in the finance department, takes over on an interim basis.The city plans to have a permanent replacement by the end of the year.   In a statement, Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the public utilities department needs to earn back the trust of its customers."The Mayor has called for sweeping reforms that include looking into every aspect of the department’s operations and changing how things are done to better serve the public," he said. In the case of the inflated timecards, Perkins declined to say how much was lost, what the workers earned, and exactly how long it was going on. He promised taxpayers that despite the troubles, the water supply is safe, and that the city would get to the bottom of it. "We own this," he said. CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Sequoyah High School students were not afraid to speak out after they said school officials told them they had to remove American flags mounted on their vehicles.On Thursday, a student showed up to the school, located about 40 minutes northwest of Tulsa, with a flag mounted on his car. “As soon as we got out of our cars in the parking lot they were already on us trying to get them down," student Kennith Hoover said. “The American flag symbolizes no racism and it's just strictly for America's freedom," student Jake Storts said. It's a symbol of patriotism, freedom and history. “I think it’s a fight that they picked that they will never win," local business owner Larry Banzet said. “The flag was in great shape, it was mounted properly," Hoover said. "It looked perfect. There was no kind of disrespect about it and they told him to take it down.” Friday, a group of students decided to stand with their friend. “You can’t tell a kid to take the flag down," Hoover said. "We disagree with that so that’s how it started.” “We’re not allowed to fly them because he can’t allow the Islamic or the KKK flag then he can’t allow the American flag," Storts said. Hoover says the school's reasoning change more than once. “Yesterday they said it was a distraction to drivers and students," he said.
