Singer R. Kelly appeared in a Chicago court Wednesday, where a judge said he would like to set a trial date for early next year and prosecutors turned over a DVD allegedly showing pornographic images involving a minor.Kelly pleaded not guilty earlier this month to 11 new charges in his sexual assault and sexual abuse case, according to his attorney, Steve Greenberg.During the brief hearing Wednesday, state prosecutors turned over DVDs allegedly containing pornographic evidence involving a minor."We'll see what it shows, we'll make our assessment on it," Greenberg told reporters after the hearing.Kelly, wearing a dark suit and flanked by his legal team, did not address the court or the media after the hearing.Judge Lawrence Flood placed a protective order on the DVDs and warned both parties against leaking them."If there's any violation of this protective order, I'm going to impose sanctions, severe sanctions," he said. "I just want everybody on notice with that. Plus, there could be criminal implications to violation of this protective order."Kelly remains free on bonds totaling million that were set in February. The next hearing in his case is scheduled for August 15.After the hearing, Kelly's spokesman Darrell Johnson said the singer looked forward to the start of the trial."I think that's great ... The faster the better," Johnson said of an early 2020 trial, adding that Kelly is "living on royalties right now."Greenberg, outside court, enumerated what he said were a number of problems with the case, including improperly collected and tested scientific evidence and issues with the statute of limitations.Kelly initially was charged in February with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse -- a Class 2 felony -- involving four alleged victims, including three who prosecutors say were underage girls. The charges, to which he pleaded not guilty, cover allegations from 1998 to 2010.In late May, a grand jury indicted him with 11 more charges pertaining to one of those four accusers. Those charges included not only aggravated criminal sexual abuse but also more serious charges: aggravated criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony; and criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony.A person convicted of Class X felonies generally can be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison, according to Illinois law. Class 1 and 2 felonies generally carry lower maximum penalties.Kelly, 52, has vehemently denied any allegations of sexual misconduct. The singer also was released on bail in March in a case in which authorities have said he failed to pay his ex-wife child support of 1,000.Kelly has faced accusations of abuse, manipulation and inappropriate encounters with girls and young women for more than two decades. In a March interview with CBS, he said: "I'm very tired of all of the lies. I've been hearing things and seeing things on all of the blogs and I'm just tired." 2919

Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal had a deep impact on his community, and that includes Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa.Dhaliwal -- the first Sikh to become a deputy at a Houston-area sheriff's department -- was gunned down while conducting a traffic stop Friday. On Monday, Correa, a 25-year-old from Ponce, Puerto Rico, visited the family, giving them ,000."Thank you Sandeep for everything you did to help others here in Houston and Puerto Rico!" Correa tweeted Monday. "Rest In Peace you'll always be remembered!"Correa said he felt especially connected with Dhaliwal because the 42-year-old officer had helped citizens of Correa's native Puerto Rico in the devastating aftermath of 2017's Hurricane Maria."When I heard he went to Puerto Rico to help a lot of people over there, he was one of the first ones to go out there, leaving his family behind to go out there and help people that were in need back home," Correa said. "It really touched me. A lot of people in Puerto Rico suffered a tragedy with Hurricane Maria."According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, it's the first time he's seen the family smile, leading Correa to say: "It means a lot. I saw them smiling and laughing. It really meant a lot to me. To come here to bring a little joy into their lives in this moment of tragedy, it really touched me."The funeral for Dhaliwal will be Wednesday, according to the sheriff's office. The Astros, who are favored to win the World Series, begin their playoff run on Friday, facing the winner of the American League Wild Card Game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Oakland Athletics. Correa was part of Houston's first World Series title team, in 2017. 1674

Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election was allowed by a federal judge to review years of Michael Cohen's emails and other online data from the time he worked under Donald Trump, according to newly unsealed warrants used in his case in Manhattan federal court. In all, the prosecutors and FBI received permission from a Washington, DC-based federal judge to execute four search warrants on Cohen's two Gmail accounts and for stored data in his Apple iCloud account in July, August and November 2017 -- long before Cohen's office was raided in 2018 and he pleaded guilty in an illegal campaign contribution and tax prosecution led by Manhattan federal prosecutors. The revelation gives new illumination to Mueller's work throughout 2017 -- before he had brought the bulk of his open criminal cases against defendants like former national security adviser Michael Flynn and a host of Russians for interfering in the election -- and shows how extensively Mueller had tracked computer data of those close to then-candidate Trump and the early days of his presidency. The search warrants released Tuesday say that the special counsel's office referred "certain aspects" of its investigation into Cohen to the New York-based US Attorney's Office. After pleading guilty in the Manhattan probe, Cohen also later pleaded guilty to lying to Congress in a case brought by Mueller's investigators. They have said he's been helpful to them, but have not revealed how so.The DC District Court search warrants related to Cohen are not yet available. The searches done by Mueller are described as part of the probable cause that led to prosecutors to seek electronic phone and other data from Cohen in their illegal campaign contribution investigation, for which he was charged. 1823
