SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say they are taking aggressive measures to contain a flu outbreak at San Diego's migrant shelter. At least 16 migrants have shown flu-like symptoms; all were recently flown to San Diego from Texas by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Three migrants tested positive with a rapid influenza test."In order to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease we've become more aggressive in treating everyone with symptoms, regardless of when those symptoms started," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, Deputy Public Health Officer for the County.RELATED: Flu outbreak sickens over 30 migrants at border centerBefore being admitted to the shelter, migrants undergo medical screenings.Migrants with flu-like symptoms are being isolated off-site in hotel rooms, along with their family members who are receiving preventative medicine.On Thursday, County Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Nathan Fletcher expressed their continued frustration with the federal government's handling of the migrant crisis. "Had we not taken these steps these migrant families would have been released by ICE at bus stops or transit centers without the medical screenings, without the treatment, without the attention, and without the help and support that we have provided. This could have proved disastrous for our region," said Fletcher. Fletcher says while they don't know how many people may develop flu-like symptoms in the days and weeks ahead, they are actively monitoring the population. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border officials say the man shot and killed on Friday night by a Border Patrol agent behind the Las Americas Premium Outlets mall was trying to enter the U.S. illegally.A statement from Aaron Heitke, Chief Patrol Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector reads:“On Friday, October 23, 2020, at approximately 5:45 p.m., a United States Border Patrol agent responded to apprehend a man illegally entering the United States immediately west of the port of entry in San Ysidro, California. During the arrest, an altercation ensued and the agent discharged his firearm, wounding the man, who was later identified as an adult Mexican national. Nearby agents and law enforcement personnel responded immediately and initiated lifesaving efforts until emergency medical services arrived. At approximately 6:25 p.m. the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is currently being led by the San Diego Police Department. Customs and Border Protection will continue to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The specifics of this incident have also been shared with FBI, DHS OIG and CBP Office of Professional Responsibility. Additional updates will be provided by the San Diego Police Department, inquiries should be directed to them.”SDPD added Saturday that the 30-year-old man was shot once in the torso by the agent after he fought the agent, who sustained minor injuries.Social justice leaders with the American Friends Service Committee and Alliance San Diego have sent a letter to SDPD calling in part for an independent investigation to be handled only by police, not border officials or unions. Part of the letter reads, “Any involvement or coordination with these agencies, and specifically with CIIT has the potential to corrupt the investigation and could be considered an obstruction of justice.”Pedro Rios with the American Friends Service Committee said that he and others are considering holding a demonstration on Sunday. “I think for us it's important to ensure that people are treated with dignity regardless of who they are and we shouldn't jump to conclusions about the person who is now a victim and is now deceased,” Rios told ABC 10News on Saturday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Anxiety is growing along La Jolla Boulevard after months of drive-by vandals shattering the windows of businesses, homes and cars."It's a little terrifying, random, and I don't know when it's going to happen," said David Heine.Heine owns Beaumont's Eatery. Last Saturday, just before 7 p.m., a customer parked a car across the street."Just crossed the street onto the sidewalk, when we heard the smash. Their car window shattered. At the same time, rocks came through our awning," said Heine.Heine says the rocks tore through the vinyl awning and struck his hostess, who wasn't injured."The rocks bounced past kids on the patio. It's a dangerous situation," said Heine.It's a danger that isn't going away. The incident is the latest of five similar incidents here in the past few months. Along a mile-and-a-half stretch of La Jolla Blvd., a similar story has been unfolding: Kitchen and car windows shattered, along with windows of other businesses like the Baskin-Robbins.Megan Murphy, co-owner of Verdes El Ranchero restaurant, just finished replacing her second rock shattered window. But this Saturday night, a clue emerged from her new cameras. In the video, a dark sedan pauses to let two people cross the street, before a person wearing red leans out of the window and appears to toss something out. At the same time, rocks appear on the ground near the pedestrians. The rocks recovered have been about an inch long, but they've been thrown with velocity. A handful of people have been hit, but there have been no serious injuries."One of these times someone is going to get seriously hurt, and it's not okay ... not kids being kids. According to the agency, crews will close the westbound SR-54 connector to northbound and southbound I-805 between 11 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Friday. It found that 45 percent of those polled were "extremely proud" to be American, while 70 percent said they were "proud.""Patriotism isn't something that you can force," said David Povlick, who was visiting downtown San Diego Wednesday. "It's something that people have to feel.
