Shi said the ritual was suspended for 300 years because the altar where the ritual was held was destroyed. The 26-meter-high three-storey alter was restored last year at the temple, located in Dengfeng, Central China's Henan Province. The 600 Buddhists were selected out of 1,000 pious Buddhists nationwide. Shi said that only Buddhists who have passed a long-term inspection and are believed to have a "pre-destined lot" with Buddhism will be allowed to take the ritual and admitted by the temple. "Only Buddhists who practice Buddhism to a high level can be tonsured and allowed to take the ritual," Shi said. The ritual will last 28 days during which time the 600 monks will listen to doctrines, learn Buddhism rituals and manners in the temple. Both Buddhism and Taoism seem to be attractting more believers. An international forum on the "Daode Jing", a classic of Taoism, was held last month and lured 300 Taoists from around the world who wanted to explore the true essence of the classic text.

At least two Chinese universities could achieve "world-class" status within the next 20 years, the president of one of the United States' oldest higher education institutions said yesterday in Beijing. The Chinese government and Yale are sharing the cost of the trip. Participating students and faculty, the majority of whom had never before been to China, were handpicked to represent the university's different schools. Delegation groups will today meet with government leaders, including Yang Jiechi, the minister of foreign affairs and Jiang Zhenghua, chairman of the Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party. The visiting students may even bridge some cultural divides. "I think that young people can play a very important role in securing a peaceful future for the US and China," Levin said. "Today, especially among the older generation, there is a great deal of ignorance about China in the United States, and some ignorance about the United States in China as well." Before leaving for China, some of the delegation met with US President George W. Bush, who spoke about the importance of "people-to-people diplomacy". SHANGHAI: Preliminary investigations showed improper maintenance work had caused a Shanghai gas station explosion on Saturday, which saw four killed and 40 injured.A team of officials from related government agencies is investigating the blast at the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) outlet in Pudong District, reported the Xinmin Evening News Sunday.The station had earlier been suspended on October 11 for safety concerns and was scheduled for reopening Sunday.CNPC did not respond to media queries on the explosion.Most of those injured from the incident have been discharged from hospital.Two of the 29 blast victims sent to Punan Hospital died while 26 were discharged Sunday morning.A 49-year-old woman who was hit on the head by a piece of blast debris is still under observation at the hospital.She was said to have been in her apartment close to the station when the explosion shattered her window.The 13 other injured who were sent for treatment at the Pudong branch of Renji Hospital have been discharged.The explosion on Saturday occurred at 7:50 am in the junction of South Yanggao and Pusan roads.Two maintenance workers on the site were killed instantly. Witnesses said one of the workers was blown five stories high before landing nearby.A woman who was cycling 1 km away from the station was hit by a piece of blast debris and died in hospital.A motorcyclist, later identified as Wang Dong from Anhui Province, also died after debris hit him on the head.He had taken off his helmet to answer a call on his mobile phone.The Shanghai Evening News said Sunday that visits to several gas stations in the area found unsafe practices.Drivers lining up for gas smoked and used mobile phones without being stopped by station employees.The blast also damaged a bus that had stopped near the station and injured passengers on board.
