SANTO DOMINGO, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Dominican Republic and Haiti Wednesday launched a joint plan aimed at eliminating cholera, which has claimed more than 7,000 lives in both countries since October 2010.The efforts were backed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Dominican officials said.The plan, "Call to action: the Hispaniola without cholera", aims to improve sanitary and living conditions of the Haiti people who face herculean reconstruction work following a devastating earthquake in the country on Jan. 12, 2010, that killed 220,000 people and displaced over 1 million.Cases of cholera, an infection that causes severe diarrhea that can lead to dehydration and death, first appeared in Haiti in October, 2010.The epidemic has so far killed more than 7,000 people and left nearly 500,000 more sick in Haiti.It also killed 135 people in the Dominican Republic as of September 2011, according to Dominican health authorities.Some 500 million U.S. dollars will be invested in projects related to sanitization and the construction of infrastructure that has to do with waterworks in both nations in the long term.

HONG KONG, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Computer and electronic device maker Lenovo, listed in both Hong Kong and New York, has replaced Dell to become the world's second largest personal computer company, Lenovo said Thursday.Lenovo made the remarks in a statement, citing figures released by International Data Corporation (IDC), a global provider of business intelligence for the consumer technology market.Following five quarters as the fastest-growing PC maker among the world's top vendors, the preliminary IDC data reported that Lenovo has achieved record market share of around 13.7 percent and record quarterly shipment volume of some 12.6 million units.Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing said his company had surpassed two competitors to capture the No. 2 spot in worldwide PCs in just two quarters and it was the highest rank that Lenovo has achieved in worldwide PC sales.Given current competitive environment, the new achievement positioned Lenovo as a strong challenger to ultimately become the global market leader, Yang said in the statement."We are growing in the enterprise and the consumer space. ROME, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China is playing its part in projects of the United Nations to improve global food security under the framework of South-South Cooperation (SSC), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Tuesday.FAO recently co-signed two new tripartite agreements with China, Liberia and Senegal respectively to support implementation of a series of food security initiatives and projects in Liberia and Senegal, the organization said in a press release.The Rome-based food agency said the agreements were signed in the context of the Strategic Alliance between FAO and China on SSC in support of programs for food and nutrition security in selected countries.The funding provided through the new agreement comes from a FAO-China Trust Fund of 30 million U.S. dollars, it said.Under the agreement with Liberia, China will contribute over one million dollars and provide technical assistance through 24 Chinese experts and technicians to support implementation of the country's National Program for Food Security over a two-year period.In Senegal, China will provide assistance through 26 experts and technicians."At a time when continued economic uncertainties are having an impact on the flow of traditional North-South development assistance, South-South Cooperation is creating and building on partnerships that support the direct exchange of financial and technical contributions between developing countries," said Laurent Thomas, FAO Assistant Director-General, Technical Cooperation Department."FAO's experience with South-South Cooperation has shown that the knowledge and skills of technical experts and field technicians from the (global) South have made an invaluable contribution to efforts to modernize small-scale agriculture throughout the developing world," he added.FAO's SSC initiative was launched in 1996 to provide technical support to country-level action on food insecurity.According to the organization, a total of 47 tripartite agreements have been signed to provide technical assistance among developing countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and over 1,500 experts and technicians have been fielded in the framework of various food security initiatives.In addition to the Strategic Alliance with China, letters of intent for SSC Strategic Alliance have also been signed so far with Argentina and Indonesia.

BANGKOK, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Bangkok residents gathered in the city centre on Thursday, making ten thousand micro-organism balls to help clean the polluted water in flooded areas.Organized by local volunteer groups, the activity aimed to make 10,000 Effective Micro-organism balls (EM Ball), which are proven to be efficient in cleaning contaminated floodwater.According to Danal Chanchaochai, the organizer of the event, people in flooded areas were facing critical conditions as germs may spread in polluted water and threat their health. Mainly consist of soil, rice bran and micro-organisms, a tennis-sized EM Ball is capable to clean up 10 liter of water and can last for as long as one month, which making it a perfect water sanitizer.Another main objective of the event was to educate citizens on the simple steps of making EM Balls, in case of more flood in the city, he said.The organization had generated buzz on social media sites like facebook and twitter, calling everyone to help.Held at Amarin Plaza, one shopping mall at city centre, the activity attracted groups of volunteers, including office workers, local students and even foreign visitors.Volunteers were lining up to get the raw materials from the collection point and gave back completed EM Balls to the distribution centre in boxes. Residents needed to present their identity cards in order to retrieve the donated water cleaners.Volunteer Kulawan Ayura Chai said that, although her house hadn' t been affected by water yet, she understood the difficult situation faced by the victims and felt responsible to help.Lasted for three days from Thursday to Saturday, the activity aimed to make 100,000 EM Balls, adding to the 30,000 balls made earlier, to distribute to the flood victims in Bangkok and other regions in Thailand.

BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- In response to the government's call to build a greener economy, China's transport authorities have taken a slew of measures to promote energy saving and emission reductions in the sector.Under the sector's funding policy unveiled earlier this year, 122 emission-cutting projects in the industry have received financial support totalling 250 million yuan (39.3 million U.S. dollars). Encouraged by the special funds, another 8.06 billion yuan in investment went to the projects, according to He Jianzhong, spokesman for the Ministry of Transport (MOT).The projects were estimated to be able to save 315,000 metric tons of coal equivalent, replace 224,000 metric tons of fuel oil and reduce carbon dioxide emission by 1.14 million metric tons, He said.Meanwhile, the MOT has launched nationwide programs to promote low-carbon traffic. It has carried out 80 pilot projects on emission control and designated 10 cities as pilot areas to study and promote green transport system, including Tianjin, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Guiyang, Baoding and Wuhan.He said the ministry will continue to intensify efforts to regulate emissions in the sector to meet the industry's control target during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).In efforts to build a more environmental-friendly society, the government pledged that it will reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of economic output in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with the level of 2005.
