SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An injured cyclist is searching for answers along with some items that disappeared after a possible hit-and-run crash Monday.Rick Cessinger started biking from Ocean Beach to his home in Mission Beach around 4 p.m. Monday after leaving the home of his friend, Janet Kelleher."He put his backpack and helmet on, and rides off," said Kelleher.The handyman biked down Catalina Boulevard. About a mile and a half away, there was a crash near the intersection of Catalina Boulevard and Tennyson Street, leaving Cessinger unconscious. A day later, Cessinger woke up in a hospital with six broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, a punctured lung, and little memory of what happened.A photo of the bike helmet reveals it was cracked in the back. Kelleher retired from a career in law enforcement."It seems to me he was hit from the back and ejected off the bike ... It's bad. It's disgraceful. How does someone hit someone and drive off?" said Kelleher.That question is just one of many. Here's another one: Was Cessinger also robbed? Paramedics left Cessinger a bag with his helmet and shoes. His backpack, containing his wallet and phone, is missing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A warning for all homeowners after what looked like a yard sale turned out to be an elaborate theft. Several men staying in a vacation rental near La Jolla pulled up in a moving truck, stealing everything inside. Surveillance cameras caught men moving things through a Birdrock-area garage and into a truck, but the men aren’t movers. They were reportedly staying in the vacation rental, but according to the homeowner had checked in using fake credentials, fake credit cards and fake IDs. "As soon as I found out I went and told all of my employees, and will definitely spread the word that there is a crew going around doing something like this,” said Tyler Trowbridge, a contractor at Trowbridge Custom Floors.Trowbridge is a contractor working in the neighborhood. He’s had tools stolen while working at home and knows how the homeowner is feeling. "You don't wish it upon anybody, it's their personal belongings and their home was invaded. It's a breach of privacy and an invasion in your world."In this case, it wasn’t small belongings either. The owner says the men cleared the place out, taking everything from furniture and TVs to the stove. "When I talked to the actual owner, it was a lot more intense than I thought."What’s more, the owner says meth was left inside. "The fact that there were drugs in the house too, leads me to believe that it might happen again too."La Jolla Vacation Rentals is the property manager. 10News asked them for an interview, but they wouldn’t do it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Young Marine from San Diego won a scholarship to escort WWII veterans to Iwo Jima and Guam in Spring of 2021."I was just blown away because I'm not only so excited to go to Iwo Jima and Guam and experience the culture and immerse myself but also being able to escort a veteran. That is just something that is a once in a lifetime opportunity," Sophia Righthouse, 17, said.The trip is part of the Young Marines' annual "Reunion of Honor." The week-long trip brings WWII veterans back to the islands they fought on so many years ago and educates Young Marines on history, culture, and leadership.The trip happens each March, and in 2021 the pandemic is putting it at risk. Righthouse isn't worried. "I know the government is working with Japan right now to make sure we can go over," she says.Righthouse won the Jimmy Trimble Scholarship from the American Veterans Center. The scholarship is named after a young athlete who gave up the opportunity to play professional baseball to join the Marines.Trimble died in battle on Iwo Jima on March 1, 1945, at 19-years-old.Righthouse exemplifies Trimble's "finest qualities" needed to earn the scholarship. You may recognize her name from her heroism in 2018 when she evacuated people in an apartment complex that was on fire.She earned an award from the San Diego Fire Department, and a day named in her honor by San Diego City Council.She's won the National Honor Society Volunteer Service Award for completing more than 1,300 hours of community service.Righthouse excelled in cheerleading, dance, and in the Young Marines. Her uniform is adorned with dozens of badges, and medals."Honestly I think it's my family and my friends that push me to strive every single day to be the best person I can possibly be," she said.She found her calling as a Young Marine when she was 8-years-old at a parade."As an 8-year-old you don't see anything like that in the world, other than in the actual military. So I saw them marching, they were all uniformed and disciplined and I said I want to do something like that," she said with a smile.She joined the Young Marines that year and has been in the program for nine years."It's a really great program to strengthen your leader inside of you and bring out the natural born leader that we all have," she said.This trip will be one of her last before she graduates high school.She applied to several military academies and colleges and hopes to make a positive impact on the world as an Operations Officer.When asked what she wants San Diegans to know about her journey, she said "one of the biggest things I've learned, even though I'm 17, is just trust the process and believe in yourself." 2701

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego student has been named among those killed when an international flight bound for Ukraine crashed in Iran.Sara Saadat was a student at Alliant International University in Scripps Ranch. She was a passenger on Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752, according to the school.In a statement to 10News, Saadat was visiting family in Iran and was heading back to San Diego to begin the spring 2020 semester. She was enrolled in the university's clinical psychology program."We extend our deepest sympathies to family and friends of Alliant Student Sara Saadat. Sara was a passenger on Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 that crashed in Iran. It appears that Sara was visiting family in Iran and was on her way back to San Diego to begin our spring 2020 term in our PsyD in Clinical Psychology program," the school's statement read. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman who shot through her neighbors’ apartment in Clairemont Mesa after they complained about noise was convicted Tuesday.Brittany Lefler, 37, is facing up to 36 years in prison after being convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm among other charges.The prosecutor in the case argued that Lefler was drinking and was “out of control” and “verbally abusive” when Erik Morales called police around 1 a.m. on December 29, 2016 at her apartment on Beadnell Way. RELATED: Topless standoff suspect pleads not guilty in courtMorales and her roommates told police Lefler kept banging on the wall and screaming inside her apartment. When officers arrived, Lefler wanted to know who called police on her. Morales’ 19-year-old son said that, at one point, he went outside and asked Lefler to “keep it down.”That’s when Lefler reached into her boot and pulled out what appeared to be a gun. "She (Lefler) said, `C'mon outside, I'll bust a cap in you,"' Henry Molina testified.Molina said he heard Lefler telling police she kept a gun for “things like this.” Deputy District Attorney Michael Reilly told the jury that around 5 a.m., Lefler pointed her gun at the people inside Morales’ apartment before pulling the trigger."She (Lefler) did it on purpose," the prosecutor said. "In a moment of anger and fury, she shot through that front door. Ms. Lefler sent a message with a bullet through that front door. She can't do that!"Deputy Alternate Public Defender Gilson Gray told the jury Lefler called 911 several times that night but police didn’t help her.Gray said Lefler was home alone, scared and outnumbered by her complaining neighbors.
