SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — She's a pre-med student at UCSD with hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon, and for the last year-and-a-half, Shea Cruise has been homeless.Like so many on the UCSD campus, the senior's plate is pretty full. The neuroscience student has a rigorous course load."I was taking 20 units this quarter, full time is 12," said Cruise, 23.But her studies aren't the only thing occupying her thoughts. Shortly after transferring to the school two summers ago from Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, she decided to live in her car to save money. "I shower in the gym on campus," said Cruise.Cruise also borrows her textbooks — whatever it takes. "This was something I had to do to reach my goals. Something I was willing to sacrifice," said Cruise. Then, four weeks ago came an unexpected medical diagnosis, which will force her to take leave from her job for appointments and treatment.Cruise started a Gofundme campaign to help with tuition and other expenses, at the same time revealing a truth few on campus were aware of."It's an invisible population. I look at it as a lesson. It teaches me to be more empathetic toward other people. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s boating community is stepping up to help a family who lost their floating home in a fire. The boat, Both/And World, caught fire while docked at the Shelter Island Marina Saturday just before 3 p.m. "I was just merely walking off of the boat and saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react,” said witness Charlie Colson. The man who lived on the boat with his family grabbed a small hose and tried to put out the flames, Colson said. People on shore grabbed a larger hose and had most of the flames knocked down by the time firefighters arrived. Colson said the family, which includes the man’s wife and 6-year-old son with special needs, had just moved on to the boat last week. The only salvageable items were the boy’s stuffed Donald Duck and his iPad. According to Colson, the flames were sparked by a lithium battery on a charger. Investigators have yet to release the official cause of the fire. “It’s gonna change their plans for a little but it’ll all work out,” said Colson. “The lucky part: no one was hurt; no other boats damaged; family’s okay, other than being rattled.” Colson believes the boat is a total loss. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Steeped in tradition, Native American powwows celebrate life, renewing old friendships and creating new ones. With more Indian reservations than any other county in the United States, San Diego powwows help keep those traditions alive."We all try to come together and share the culture, do the best we can to teach our children. I was born and raised on the reservation, but my kids were not, so it's hard to instill the same teachings that I was brought up with," said Emerald Arnold, born and raised on the Navajo reservation.Children and adults dressed in colorful regalia for the powwow, which was held Saturday at the Harold J. Ballard Parent Center in Old Town. We can have our rights restored, our heritage recognized."Native American veterans were honored at the powwow, including 102-year-old Joe Renteria, a World War II Navy veteran."It brings different people here, and it's just like a family reunion, that's what it amounts to."While each tribe has its own teachings, culture, and traditions, they come together as one at the powwow. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sitting in the heart of San Diego, Mission Trails Regional Park has 65 miles of trails, as well as boating and picnic areas. You might call it a hikers and bikers paradise, as it provides eight thousand acres of pure outdoor enjoyment for more than two million visitors each year. "Mission Trails Regional Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country," says Jennifer Morrissey, the Executive Director of the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation.Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in mid-March, the park has seen a big increase in visitors, which is great. But it has also created a few problems. "Because we have so many more people," says Morrissey, "we are seeing that there is more wear and tear on the trails."Prior to the pandemic, some of the park's hundreds of volunteers would help maintain the trails. But for the time being, that program has been suspended. "Unfortunately, we don't have volunteers at the park right now. They do everything, from helping on the trails, to staffing the visitors center, to beautification projects. So right now, within the park, there is a lot of work that needs to be done."That work takes money. And that is why Morrissey says 'Giving Tuesday' is the most important fundraiser of the year. "There is a matching progam in place, so that every dollar people give will be matched dollar for dollar by a group of our donors. .Funds that we raise through 'Giving Tuesday' can go towards trail maintenance, restoration, and educational programs we are doing online right now.'While donations are always important, they are even more critical during this pandemic.
