BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called for efforts to carry on patriotism and spirit of selfless devotion for the advancement of the country's modernization drive.     Xi made the call at a seminar to mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of Li Dazhao, a founder of the Communist Party of China(CPC). BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Early and heavy snow storms in north China have killed 32 people, destroyed nearly 300,000 hectares of winter crops, and caused nearly 7 billion yuan (about one billion US dollars) of direct economic losses as of 2 p.m. Sunday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     The death toll did not include those who died in snow-caused traffic accidents, the ministry said. Ten died in Hebei Province, 12 died in Henan Province, and others in provinces of Shanxi, Shandong and Shaanxi.     As of 2 p.m. Sunday, more than 9.6 million people were affectedly snow storms, and 166,000 people had been evacuated from their homes or stranded vehicles jammed on the roads.     More than 15,000 buildings collapsed, the ministry said.     Heavy snow storms began to fall on Monday in northern and central Chinese provinces, including Hebei, Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Hubei and Shaanxi, and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.     Beijing also experienced heavy snow, but no deaths have been reported so far.

BEIJING, Nov,17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Tuesday that his talks with U.S. President Barack Obama were candid, constructive and fruitful.     At a joint press conference with Obama after the talks, Hu said he had "very good talks" with the U.S. president, and that they made a deep exchange of views on the China-U.S. relationship and major international and regional issues of common concern and reached consensus on many important issues.     Hu said both Obama and he believed that international cooperation needs to be strengthened at a time when the international situation continues profound and complex changes, global challenges keep increasing and interdependence between nations intensifies.     Under the new circumstances, China and the United States have more comprehensive shared interests, and a more extensive prospect for cooperation on a series of major issues involving the peace and development of the humankind, Hu said.     Hu said he and Obama gave positive remarks on the development of the China-U.S. relationship since the inauguration of the new U.S. administration, and they agreed to strengthen dialogue, communication and cooperation from a strategic and far-sighted perspective, and to make joint efforts to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship, so as to promote world peace, stability and prosperity.

SANTIAGO, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China is a dynamo of the world economy and is playing a central role in helping a global economic recovery, said Alicia Barcena, executive secretary of the Economic Commission for the Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), on Friday.     "China is part of the world trade of wheat, rice, soya, sugar and others, playing a very important role in the increase of those product exports. The same happens in the case of the minerals and oil," Barcena told Xinhua in an interview.     He said China is one of the most important market for Latin American and the Caribbean products.     "China is being a blessing for the exports of raw materials from Latin America and the Caribbean. But it is also a great exporter (to the region). So, it competes with the countries of this region, mainly with Mexico and the Central American nations," said Barcena.     Trade between China and Latin America has grown tremendously, he noted.     He said Mexico, for example, is beginning to see China as a partner rather than a competitor.     Mexico has given priority to trade relations with China. As a result, the Asian country is now the fifth largest overseas market for Mexican products.     Meanwhile, South America has also improved ties with China.     "All producers see the opportunity of reaching the Chinese market," said Barcena.

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday that the Copenhagen climate talks have reached the decisive moment and all parties should focus on consensus in a future-oriented manner and seek common grounds while shelving differences so as to bring hope to the world people.     Wen made the remarks when he met British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on the sidelines of the UN-led talks being held here.     Wen said many developed countries have tabled quantified emission reduction targets while some developing countries have also set up voluntary goals in curbing emissions, which represents new progress in international cooperation in tackling climate change.
