SHANGHAI: Thirty intellectually disabled teenagers and volunteers from 18 nations and regions shared their friendship, joy and ideas at a forum held on Friday to fight stereotypes and spread the message of the Special Olympics.The 2007 Global Youth Summit, in conjunction with the ongoing Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, offered young people an opportunity to talk openly about their needs and expectations and seek ways to reverse stereotyped attitudes about those who are mentally disadvantaged .The 30 pairs of students each had a Special Olympics athlete accompanied by a peer from a middle school or college. The event also brought together adult celebrities from China and abroad to lend their support.At yesterday's summit, Piao Roubing, 17, an athlete from Northeast China, recalled her friendship with her partner, Zhao Xiaoyue, who now studies at a Shanghai university. After meeting at a community forum five years ago, the two have been in contact to share both their happiness and troubles."I was surprised when I received a short message from her one day to consult me about her pains in growing up," said the 19-year-old Zhao. "I feel I am very important to her and she encourages me to have the power and determination to change lives."Compared with many others, people with intellectual disabilities are more sincere and pure, Zhao said. "She once misunderstood my friendly roughhousing with other girls and offered to help me, which made me very impressed."Asked to describe her companion, Piao said the older girl was respectful, lovely and optimistic."She is a great sister," Piao said.The summit yesterday included a moving moment when Piao, with her eyes covered, was asked to identify Zhao among a group of individuals -- including movie star Colin Farrell -- by only feeling their hands.With little difficulty the girl recognized her friend's hand. "It's hard to describe very clearly, but the feeling (of her hand) is different."Participants at the summit also took part in interactive games, noting that the Special Olympics provides young people the opportunity to make an immediate difference in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities."I find friendship with my partner in basketball," said Serbian athlete Darko Boskovic.Global Youth Summits are held in conjunction with the Special Olympics World Games every two years. The inaugural Global Youth Summit was held in Anchorage, Alaska, the United States, during the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games.

The first national-level association of Taiwan-funded enterprises held its inaugural ceremony in Beijing yesterday - a move which experts say will help boost cross-Straits economic integration and peace. "Taiwan business people are all over the mainland now," said Chang Han-wen, the newly-elected chairman of the Association of Taiwanese-invested Enterprises on the Mainland. According to conservative estimates, there are at least 1 million Taiwan business people on the mainland. The national-level association, comprising heads of Taiwan enterprise associations and representatives of Taiwan enterprises on the mainland, aims to serve the island's enterprises, protect their legal rights, boost relations with the ministries in Beijing and strengthen communication with mainland firms. Chen Yunlin, head of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the island has chalked up a huge trade surplus with the mainland and its trade with the mainland has become an indispensable driving force of Taiwan's economy. "The mainland market provides huge potential for the expansion and industrial upgrading of Taiwan enterprises," he said. Xu Shiquan, vice-chairman of the National Society of Taiwan Studies, said that the establishment of the association coincides with the mushrooming of Taiwan-funded enterprises on the mainland. "Besides their number and scale, more and more Taiwan enterprises are keen to upgrade their industrial structure into the hi-tech sector," he said. "Though they usually forge local associations, faster expansion and a larger scale require a higher level of coordination," he said. Feng Bangyan, director of the Institute of Taiwan Economy at Jinan University in Guangzhou, said the association, which brings together many business heavyweights, would definitely pressure Taiwan authorities to grant more freedom for economic growth. BEIJING -- China regrets that the United States requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set up a dispute settlement panel to solve the intellectual property rights (IPR) disputes between the two sides.Wang Xinpei, spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, made the remarks in a news conference here Thursday.The Chinese government has always been firm in protecting IPR and tried to solve IPR protection problems through dialogues, Wang said.China has detailed and clarified problems raised by the US and showed great sincerity, Wang said.China's laws regarding IPR protection completely meet WTO requirements, Wang said, adding China is opposed to any WTO member's move of making developing members shoulder extra obligations through dispute settlement system, Wang said.China is studying the US request and will act actively, Wang said.The United States on Monday requested the WTO to establish a dispute settlement panel regarding so-called China's deficiencies in intellectual property protection.The US initiated the dispute over the issue by requesting consultations with China on April 10, 2007.Under WTO rules, the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) will consider the US request for the establishment of a panel at its next meeting on August 31.

SHANGHAI -- China will launch its first Mars probe in October 2009 as part of a joint mission with Russia, said sources with the Shanghai Space Administration, the main developer of the probe, on Monday. Researchers are "pressing ahead" with the project for a synchronized launching with a Russian probe, said Chen Changya, a researcher with the Shanghai Institute of Satellite Engineering, at a space technology exhibition. He said the home-developed Chinese probe is scheduled for completion by June 2009. The probe, 75 centimeters long, 75 centimeters wide, 60 centimeters high and weighing 110 kilograms, is designed to be able to serve a two-year mission, according to Chen. Its model is on display at the exhibition. The Chinese probe, with Russia's Phobos-Grunt, will be launched by a Russian carrier rocket, Chen said. They are expected to land on Mars in 2010 after 10 month's flight.

The Employment Promotion Law is being revised to provide a firmer legal footing for efforts to combat the discrimination that Hepatitis B virus carriers have encountered while looking for work, a senior official said. If the revised law is passed, Hepatitis B carriers will have the tools they need to guard their right to secure fair employment and to have discriminating employers punished. Liu Danhua, deputy director of the Labor and Social Security Ministry's training and employment department, said the drafters planned to write a chapter called "fair employment" and to add an article that bans employers from refusing to hire applicants because they carry infectious viruses. She made the remarks during an online interview on www.gov.cn on Friday. At least 15,000 people participated in the online chat and left more than 600 messages for the official. Many spoke about their experiences of being rejected by employers because they are Hepatitis B virus carriers. They applauded the document released by the Labor and Social Security Ministry and the Ministry of Health in May, which called for the protection of virus carriers' employment rights. Still, some were disappointed that some employers seemed not to have heeded the call. According to the document, except for those industries barred to Hepatitis carriers because of the possibility they might spread the virus, such as food processing, employers are not to make Hepatitis screening a mandatory part of physical checkups.
