Here's what's happening in the world of politics Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018.Congressman Collins suspends reelection campaign after insider trading charges— New York Republican Rep. Chris Collins will not seek reelection following charges of insider trading earlier this week.In a statement, Rep. Collins wrote it would be in the best interests for constituents that he suspend his reelection campaign."After extensive discussions with my family and friends over the last few days, I have decided that it is in the best interests of the constituents of NY-27, the Republican Party and President Trump's agenda for me to suspend my campaign for re-election to Congress."Wednesday, federal prosecutors charged Collins, his son, and another man with 13 counts of securities fraud, wire fraud, and false statement from the insider trading scheme around Australian pharmaceutical company Innate Immunotherapeutics Limited.Read more.North Korea continues to reject US proposals on denuclearization— North Korea has turned down repeated US proposals on denuclearization, CNN reports. The US has reportedly made "specific proposals for starting and proceeding to the end point of fully verified denuclearization," including a timeline, all of which have been rejected.North Korea has reportedly considered the proposals "gangster-like."President Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in a June summit. I can understand that some of them may be in jeopardy, and you may want to retool an antiquated immigration system. It looks weird to have a lottery system. But chain migration? No. Family reunification."Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were granted US citizenship Thursday.Read more. 2440

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) — A Florida sheriff says he will deputize every gun owner in his county to put down any violent protests his deputies can’t handle alone.Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels gave no indication in a three-minute video released Wednesday that any demonstrations are planned in his suburban Jacksonville county.Daniels also said he would protect any peaceful protests, but added that if anyone starts “tearing up Clay County, that is not going to be acceptable.”“If we can’t handle you, I’ll exercise the power and authority as the sheriff and I’ll make special deputies of every lawful gun owner in the county and I’ll deputize them to this one purpose: to stand in the gap between lawlessness and civility,” said Daniels, sporting a white cowboy hat as he stood in front of 18 deputies.Daniels, who is African American, said in the video that his department has a “great relationship” with its residents, but “if you come to Clay County and think for one second we’ll bend our backs for you, you’re sadly mistaken.”“The second you step out from up under the protection of the Constitution, we’ll be waiting on you and give you everything you want: all the publicity, all the pain, all the glamour and glory for all that five minutes will give you.”Daniels, a Republican finishing his first term, is being challenged by six opponents in the upcoming election. He is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement after his former employer, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, announced last year that he’d had an affair with a co-worker when he was running its jails. Daniels, who is married, was accused of later having the woman falsely arrested. He issued an apology but said he wouldn’t discuss specifics. This story first appeared on WFTS. 1794

Have you been thinking about asking your boss for a raise?  Now could be the time to ask, thanks to really low unemployment nationwide.Employers across the country are struggling to fill open positions, because of the low employment rate. "You have more bargaining power right now, and that's whether you are currently employed or whether you are looking for a new opportunity," says Andrew Murtagh, who works at the top staffing firm Robert Half. Before you go and ask for more money, Murtagh says you need to ask yourself a question first.  "You got to understand what you are worth,” he says. “Just because it is a hot market right now doesn't give you a hall pass to go around and start dictating what you want, because that may hurt you."  If you're not wanting to push the limits and ask for a raise, Murtagh says you can still ask for other perks.   "You can be very, very creative and the employer doesn't have to invest huge amounts of money to get a return," he says.  Maybe those perks include a parking spot right in front, a free meal once a week, or maybe flexible work hours so you don't have to sit in rush hour traffic.   "What I always encourage is to have active communication in the work place,” Murtagh suggests. “So, I think if you have a good relationship with your boss, then nothing should come as a surprise.” Just remember, to know your worth. 1427

Hershey's chocolate is about to get more expensive. The candy company is planning to raise the prices of a fifth of its products by about 2.5%, Hershey reiterated on Thursday. The changes will go into effect next year. One of many companies getting squeezed by rising commodity and shipping costs, Hershey hopes higher prices will offset those costs without scaring away customers.Hershey (HSY) first said that it would raise prices over the summer, citing rising operational costs. "Our new pricing approach is much more precise," said CEO Michele Buck at the time.Chief Financial Officer Patricia Little said on Thursday that Hershey started feeling the impact of higher freight and logistics last year."I don't expect that to change going forward into next year," she said. The company is doing more than just increase prices to drive growth.Hershey is investing in digital to keep impulse shopping alive online. It's also introduced new products like Hershey's Gold, a "caramelized creme" bar with pretzels and peanuts baked inside, and Reese's Outrageous, a peanut butter chocolate bar with Reese's candy inside.Next year, the company will introduce Reese's Thins, a 40% thinner Reese's peanut butter cup.Plus, the company has been scooping up healthier brands, including Pirate Brands, which makes Pirate's Booty, Smart Puffs and Original Tings.Last year, Hershey's bought Amplify Snack Brands, which makes SkinnyPop popcorn and Oatmega whey-protein bars, for .6 billion. Pirate Brands will operate within Amplify's hub in Austin, Texas. The acquisitions boosted sales in the third quarter. Sales increased by 2.9% in the three months that ended in September compared to the same period last year.The-CNN-Wire 1721
