SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several asylum seekers had their first immigration hearing before a San Diego judge Tuesday afternoon. Six migrants from Honduras and one from Guatemala were scheduled to appear for their first hearing. The group is among roughly 240 people waiting in shelters in Tijuana under President Trump's new policy. Robyn Barnard is an immigration attorney with the group Human Rights First. She's representing two men from Honduras. She met with her clients Tuesday morning after they crossed into the United States at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. "One of my clients is a leader in his church. I think he relies on his faith. He brought us all together to pray before they presented at the port, which was a very touching moment," said Barnard. The judge granted her motion to allow her clients to be interviewed by the Department of Homeland Security Officials before being returned to the shelter in Mexico. She said they fear for their lives there."That's because one, they are asylum seekers, they're not Mexican nationals, they don't feel like they would be able to go seek protection from authorities because they are seen as migrants and foreigners," said Barnard. Barnard said her clients have family in the United States ready to accept them while their claims are processed. "They've received verbal slurs for being migrants in Mexico. They are staying in a shelter because they can't afford to pay for housing. They don't have any right to work in Mexico, and the shelter has started receiving threats as a result of sheltering these asylum seekers," said Barnard. Barnard said her clients were supposed to meet with DHS at the Port of Entry in San Ysidro sometime Tuesday, but as of five p.m she had not received an update on their status. Their next immigration hearing in San Diego is scheduled for August 6th. "They've got eyes wide open about the process, and they're hopeful that they will have their chance to be here in the United States while they fight their case." 2009

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's LGBT community center, The Center, says it will not allow armed, uniformed officers at its facility or events.The announcement comes less than a week after San Diego Pride said it would not allow law enforcement to participate in the parade or events.The Center's Board of Directors voted that starting Tuesday, armed, uniformed law enforcement officers will not be allowed at the facility or future events unless its a last resort or true emergency, according to CEO Cara Dessert.RELATED: San Diego Pride: No law enforcement agency contingents in Parade, Festival"This is not about good or bad individual law enforcement officers, but rather a systemic problem in law enforcement that devalues Black lives and creates an environment in which our Black community does not feel welcomed, and in fact strikes fear and trauma," Dessert wrote, in part. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several changes are being introduced to how Assembly Bill 5 applies to freelance writers and photographers.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez announced the changes Thursday to address feedback from freelance writers and journalists over the effects of AB 5.“Having heard additional feedback from a variety of freelance writers, photographers and journalists, we are making changes to Assembly Bill 5 that accommodate their needs and still provide protections from misclassification,” Assemblywoman Gonzalez said.RELATED: Proposed bill would exempt musicians from AB 5The changes will remove the cap on the number of submissions that a freelancer writer, photographer, or editor can submit to one hiring entity before they must be classified as an employee. Hiring entities must not use a contractor to replace an employee position as well.When contractors provide services, their contract must specify the rate of their pay, when they receive payment, and the individual's intellectual property rights to the work submitted. The changes also say a freelancer can work for more than one hiring entity and cannot primarily perform their work at an entity's location.RELATED: Concerns raised as California's independent contractor law is set to take effectAB 5 was signed into law last year, requiring companies, including tech giants like Uber and Lyft, to classify their independent contractors as employees. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sea World employees went on a rescue mission Saturday to free a Sea lion pup from a plastic ribbon wrapped around his neck on Boomer's Beach.The timing is poetic, on World Oceans Day. A day that "provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean," according to WorldOceansDay.org.Sea World Animal Care Specialist Brooke Hubbard said they had been monitoring the pup and received another call Saturday. This time it sounded like the 2-3-year-old sea lion was in an area where they could safely remove the ribbon.A rescue that saved the mammal's life, "when there is lining around it's neck it can constrict it's airways and it's esophagus making it so they can't breathe or eat over time," Hubbard said.Video from her supervisor's perspective shows what it was like when the team snuck up on the sea lion, threw their net and cut the ribbon off with a pair of ordinary scissors.When they released the Sea lion, he scooted back to the ocean, "that's the best feeling in the world, especially since we didn't have to bring it back here and rehabilitate it," she said.Hubbard said this is is completely preventable, "please don't litter at the beach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo biologists are part of a team of researchers that have rescued the last remaining southwestern pond turtles from an area ravaged by the Bobcat Fire.The researchers spend the last couple of weeks finding and recovering the reptiles from the San Gabriel Mountains. The area, which was scorched by the Bobcat Fire, from Sept. 6 until early November, is now at risk of mudslides and debris flows from rain, which could impact the turtles."Our role as conservationists is to provide refuge and care for wildlife in trouble," said Kim Gray, curator of herpetology and ichthyology, San Diego Zoo Global. "We are happy to make a home for these pond turtles until their home in the mountains can be made safe for them and their offspring."The southwestern pond turtle is now rare in Southern California and faces risks to its survival, including habitat loss, invasive nonnative predators and competitors.Over the two weeks, researchers rescued eight southwestern pond turtles. The turtles will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo until their habitat is made after this year’s rainy season. When their habitat is secure, they will be returned. 1173
