DENVER, Colo. – Medical training, tactical moves, and gun range practice might not be what you expect to learn as a schoolteacher, but for some, it’s something they choose to learn to help protect their students. “It’s pretty intense training,” said Paul Gregory, one of the instructors for the three-day training session put on by nonprofit FASTER Colorado. “We want people who are willing, who are able, who are wanting to step up and take that extra responsibility to be here.” About a dozen schoolteachers, faculty members, and church security members attended this training. But since FASTER Colorado started offering classes in 2017, around 200 people have gone through the course. All who participate are volunteers. “It’s unfortunate that we have to have teachers or educators or whomever else come through this course, but it’s the way that it is,” Gregory said.“It’s the mindset, medical training and of course very advanced firearm skills,” said Laura Carno with FASTER Colorado. FASTER Colorado isn’t the only organization to offer training like this – similar training is offered in other states and through other organizations. Currently, about half of the states in the U.S. allow schools or districts to give permission to individuals – like teachers or faculty – to carry guns, according to the Giffords Law Center. “I’m not just a teacher, I’m not just a military guy, I’m a dad,” said one of the participants of the training. He chose not to share his name to protect his identity, so we will refer to him as Edgar.“Most schools that we have talked to, have a policy that if anybody on their armed team ever displays their firearm, they’re off the team,” Carno said. Administrators and a few other teachers may know, but students aren’t told who carries weapons on campus. “Having armed teachers or staff is part of a comprehensive look at security and safety for the schools,” Edgar said. Schools across the country have different approaches to school safety, from security officers to school resource officers, and medically trained staff. “There’s no single solution,” Edgar said. “There has to be a range and there has to be a defense and depth. No one solution is a solution.”From 2000 to 2018, there were 277 active shooter incidents in the U.S., according to the FBI. 27 of these incidents happened in 2018, and in two of them, armed citizens intervened. Days after a dad was caught on camera being shot as he shielded his children from gunfire at Bronx car dealership, a family friend says he has lost his job.An innocent bystander, 39-year-old Anthony Jefferson was struck in the right thigh when the shooting erupted Monday, officials said.On a GoFundMe campaign page started Thursday by close friend Serena Wingate, she wrote that Jefferson had lost his job due to the injury and also has to have surgery to remove the bullet.Jefferson's wife, Danica Jefferson, told TMZ that the injury left him temporarily unable to walk. This has resulted in the heroic dad being fired from both of his two jobs as a construction worker and head painter at a maintenance company, TMZ reported.Wingate said she set up the GoFundMe to help the dad with medical bills and help his kids with therapy after the traumatic experience.According the family friend, the father and his three kids were at the dealership shopping for a new vehicle to surprise his wife for her birthday.That's when shots rang out inside the Boston Road business. HONG KONG – Hong Kong authorities on Wednesday withdrew an unpopular extradition bill that sparked months of chaotic protests that have since morphed into a campaign for greater democratic change. "As a result of the divided views of the public regarding the (extradition) bill, there have been conflicts in the society," Secretary for Security John Lee told the city's legislature. Lee said the administration decided to suspend the amendment exercise after studying the matter. “For this purpose I wrote to the president of Legco (Legislative Council) to withdraw the notice to resume the second reading of the bill,” Lee said. “And as a result, the Legislative Council meeting stopped handling the bill. Thereafter, the administration stated many times that the revision has come to a halt. TAMPA, Fla. — A 10-year-old girl is making a big difference in the City of Tampa.Vivian Anderson wrote a letter to Tampa Mayor Jane Castor in December 2019 after seeing a “Men Working” sign at a construction site where men and women were working side-by-side.“Well I didn’t really like how it was excluding the women,” said Vivian.In her letter, Vivian suggested the sign should be more inclusive and say “Workers Present” instead. Days, weeks and months went by without a response from the mayor’s office.“I was thinking she probably wasn’t gonna get it,” said Vivian.“I told her the wheels of government work slow and that it takes time and we’ll just have to wait to see what happens,” said Mary Anderson, Vivian’s mom.Finally, a letter arrived and Vivian was thrilled.“Happy, really, excited. I started screaming in the living room,” she said.The city is now ensuring that inclusive signage is required instead of “Men at Work.” Vik Bhide, Mobility Department Director, says that will be done during the design review, permit review and coordination of work on all projects. Bhide says the city phased out that type of signage years ago, but they’re now making sure other companies and contractors are on the same page.Adding to Vivian’s excitement, a second letter arrived in the mail inviting her to meet with Mayor Castor.During the meeting, Vivian was presented with a hard hat and two signs.
