Authorities are investigating whether deputies shared graphic photos of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others. The Los Angeles Times reports that a public safety source with knowledge of the events had seen one of the photos on the phone of another official in a setting that was not related to the investigation of the crash. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the allegations. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said in a statement Friday it was investigating the allegations. "The Sheriff’s Department is aware of recent media reports alleging deputies shared images from the January 26th, 2020 helicopter crash, which tragically claimed the lives of nine people. The facts surrounding these allegations are currently under investigation, as are the effectiveness of existing policies and procedures. The Sheriff is deeply disturbed at the thought deputies could allegedly engage in such an insensitive act. A thorough investigation will be conducted by the Department, with the number one priority of protecting the dignity and privacy of the victims and their families." 1182

Another Mississippi inmate has died in a troubled state prison. State corrections officials said the death Wednesday appeared to be a suicide by hanging. At least 10 inmates have died in the state's prisons since late December Most were killed in outbursts of violence. Eight of the deaths, including the one Wednesday, happened in the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. Violence is a recurring problem in Mississippi prisons, where many jobs for guards are unfilled. Entertainment mogul Jay-Z's charity group, Team Roc, is hosting a prison protest Friday at the Mississippi Capitol. But, state legislators plan to leave Jackson for the weekend on Thursday. 678

At least 19 journalists have been arrested, 36 journalists shot at by police with projectiles, and 76 journalists have been assaulted during the period of May 28 through 31 while covering protests throughout the US. Those figures are according to research conducted by U.S. Freedom Tracker, which keeps a tally on incidents attacking the news media’s right to report. The group said on Monday that it generally documents 100 to 150 “press freedom violations” per year in the US. In just four days, that number is well over 100. The group said that it is still investigating a number of other incidents, and it is possible that figure could increase in the coming days. Of the 76 reported assaults on journalists, 80% were by police, either through physical encounters or being shot at. There have been a few notable incidents in recent days, including a group of CNN reporters getting arrested in Minneapolis on Friday; a Louisville TV journalist being shot at with projectiles by police; reporters from Fox News being attacked by protesters in DC; and an MSNBC reporter being attacked on Saturday. Adam Symson, the CEO of the E.W. Scripps Co., which is the parent company to this station, decried the assault on press freedoms in a memo to employees on Monday. “I am greatly alarmed at the violence and hostility targeting news media, by both police and protestors,” Symson said. “I want to acknowledge that this feels like a new and unexpected dynamic. The targeting of journalists is unacceptable and inexcusable, and we will defend our right to report the news.” 1578

British Prime Minister Theresa May has formally requested a delay to the country's departure from the European Union and blamed UK lawmakers for failing to pass her Brexit deal. After promising on scores of occasions that Brexit would take place on March 29, May finally bowed to the inevitable and asked the EU to extend the divorce process. But in a stern statement in Downing Street on Wednesday evening, May blamed the delay on Members of Parliament for failing to back her deal. She said the British public wanted them to "get on with it" and said it was "high time" for them to take a decision.Calling the delay to Brexit a "matter of great personal regret," May said the British public "have had enough" and are tired of political infighting. "So far Parliament has done everything possible to avoid making a choice. All MPs have been willing to say is what they do not want," she said.Earlier, May told the House of Commons she had written to European Council President Donald Tusk, asking for a three-month delay to Brexit, until June 30.Tusk said in Brussels later that a short extension "should be possible," but on one condition -- that the UK Parliament passes May's Brexit deal.Just last week the Prime Minister 1236
