DALIAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday called on the young in Russia and China to pass on the friendship forged during World War II.Medvedev made the call in a meeting Sunday morning with more than 20 veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), part of WWII.The Russian leader, who arrived in the northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday morning, first laid flowers at a monument commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs.In the following meeting with Chinese and Russian veterans, Medvedev said Russians and Chinese forged profound friendship in their joint fight against the Nazis, and such friendship constituted the solid foundation for the relationship between the two countries.The Russian President thanked Russian and Chinese veterans for their contributions to peace.He also thanked China for renovating the memorial, which was one of more than 70 memorials commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs throughout China. All those memorials had been refurbished to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory of WWII.Dalian was the first stop of Medvedev's three-day visit to China. This was also Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.Later Sunday, Medvedev flew to Beijing to continue his state visit to China.During his stay in Beijing, Medvedev will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and call on other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.Medvedev will also travel to east China's metropolis of Shanghai, where, on the next day, he will meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and attend events marking the Russia Day at the ongoing World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Thursday that China will join hands with Cuba to strengthen cooperation and promote bilateral relations.Xi made the remarks when meeting with Vice President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, who was here to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Cuba relations.Extending the greetings of China's leadership to President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba Raul Castro Ruz and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Fidel Castro Ruz, Xi thanked Cabrisas for coming to China to attend the 50th anniversary celebrations.Xi reviewed the history of China-Cuba relations. BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official Tuesday urged state-run publishing houses to resist vulgarity.Li Changchun, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during a visit to the 17th Beijing International Book Fair.Li also urged Chinese publishers to expand their share of the international publishing market.Li said state-run publishing houses should reform their structures of ownership to increase their competitiveness and expand their international market share.The official also encouraged Chinese publishers to create more publications.Li Changchun (2nd L), a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, visits the 17th Beijing International Book Fair in Beijing, capital of China, on Aug. 31, 2010.He also urged them to resist vulgar and kitsch works both in print and in electronic media.The book fair, co-sponsored by the General Administration of Press and Publication, the Information Office of the State Council and other government departments, has attracted nearly 2,000 publishing and distribution companies from more than 58 countries and regions.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday that China and Belgium should enhance communication and cooperation in a variety of areas to deepen their bilateral relations.Based on the principle of equality and mutual benefit, China wishes to encourage mutual investment and broaden cooperation with Belgium in high-end manufacturing, biological technology, new material and agricultural products processing, Wen told Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme during a meeting.China attaches great importance to its friendly cooperative relations with Belgium, Wen said.Seizing the opportunity of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties in 2011, China wishes to make a joint effort with Belgium to inject new energy into their bilateral ties by enhancing all-level exchanges and make plans for cooperation, the premier said.Despite the global financial crisis, trade between China and Belgium has witnessed growing momentum with rocketing Belgian exports to China, Wen said.The two countries have made progress in cooperating on finance, nuclear energy, and communications, he said.Wen said both countries should oppose trade protectionism, counter global challenges and strengthen coordination and cooperation in the United Nations and the World Trade Organization.

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A public supervision scheme for China's prosecutors will be rolled out nationwide next month, a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader said Tuesday.A pilot public supervisor scheme, which started six years ago, had proved effective in supervising judicial departments, said Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, at a meeting in Beijing.From next month, the measure would be formally adopted nationwide, he said.More work should be done to improve the selection and management of public supervisors and to draft regulations, he said.Government departments, non-governmental organizations, state-owned enterprises and communities could nominate members of the public as supervisors to the procuratorates.The public supervisors would give opinions to procuratorates when prosecutors decided to drop corruption charges, or when a suspect in the corruption case complained about the arrest.They could also oversee the actions of prosecutors, to prevent illegal detentions, obtaining confessions through violence and torture, and illegal collection of evidence.A report by the Supreme People's Procuratorate to the National People's Congress in March 2008 said about 86 percent of procuratorates had taken part in the trial.At the meeting, Zhou admitted that the country still faced a tough task in judicial reform.The government would work out new policies to attract more prosecutors and judges to work in local judicial departments, he said.
