PANAMA CITY, April 17 (Xinhua) -- In Latin America there are 600,000 people infected with the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and about 50 percent of them receive treatment, regional director of UNAIDS for Latin America Cesar Nunez said on Sunday."We have to work a lot for the other half get treatment," Nunez told Xinhua during the 124th Assembly of the Inter-parliamentarian Assembly hosted in Panama City from April 15 to 20.Nunez urged the governments of the region to redouble efforts to control this pandemic, by improving the prevention campaigns to stop new infections."The availability of the medicines has grown in the last 10 years and the countries have taken this commitment, however, the number of infections each time is bigger than the number of people we can treat," he said.According to Nunez, despite the increase of new infections among women, the men sector continue being one of the most affected social groups by this virus."In Latin America we have an epidemic where the most affected are men, followed by homosexuals, lesbians and sex workers," he said.Nunez said that during the meeting with the parliamentarians, they exchanged experiences to contribute to improve the management of this disease."We have met with parliamentarians who have voted for more budget to buy more medicines, in favor of laws for more education about this topic and participation in the exchange of information to know about the advances and backwards of the fight against Aids," he said.Some 800 parliamentarians from 125 countries attended the 124th Assembly to debate the recent events in the Arab world, the disaster in Japan and sustainable development.

NEW YORK, March 9 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. stocks dropped on Wednesday, the two-year anniversary of the beginning of a bull market, as concerns of oil prices and Middle East unrest continued to weigh on investors' minds.U.S. crude oil price dipped on Wednesday as crude inventories rose more than expected, though Brent crude rose on fears caused by continued violence in Libya.Meanwhile, Rex Tillerson, the CEO of energy giant Exxon Mobil Corp., said on Wednesday that he didn't think the recent jump in oil prices was hurting the U.S. economy just yet, but it's getting close.The market was worrying that the surging oil prices would hurt global economic recovery. Adding to those concerns, the Portuguese government's two-year cost of borrowing hit the highest level since it joined the eurozone in a bond auction on Wednesday.Wednesday marked the two-year anniversary of the beginning of a bull market. On March 9, 2009, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 6,547 and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index closed at 677. The Dow is back above 12,000 now and the S&P 500 index has almost doubled.Meanwhile, the wholesale report was slightly positive, but still failed to boost the market. According to the U.S. Commerce Department, the wholesale inventories climbed 1.1 percent in January. Sales at the wholesale level rose 3.4 percent, the largest gain since November 2009.Economists expected that as businesses kept expanding, demands for products would continue to grow. LOS ANGELES, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The death rate in the United States reached an all-time low in 2009, dropping 2.3 percent from 2008, a newly released report said.This was the 10th straight year of decline, demonstrating that Americans are living longer than ever, according to the report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.The nation saw a drop from 758.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2008 to 741 per 100,000 people in 2009 when 2,436,682 deaths were reported, said the report published by HealthDay News on Wednesday.However, life expectancy for blacks remained unchanged -- 70.9 years for men and 77.4 years for women. The disparity between whites and blacks is now 4.3 years, representing a 0.2 percent increase from 2008 to 2009, the report found.The report said that deaths fell in 10 of the 15 leading causes of death -- heart disease dropped 3.7 percent, cancer fell 1.1 percent, and stroke declined 4.2 percent.Deaths from Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, chronic lower respiratory diseases and accidents all declined 4.1 percent, according to the report.Deaths from flu and pneumonia fell 4.7 percent, and deaths from septicemia, a bacterial infection, decreased 1.8 percent, the report said.Deaths from homicides fell 6.8 percent, but suicides increased from 35,933 in 2008 to 36,547 in 2009. Other than suicide, which overtook septicemia as the 10th leading cause of death, the ranking of the leading causes of death was unchanged from 2008 to 2009, the report noted.Infant mortality hit a record low in 2009, falling from 6.59 deaths per 1,000 births in 2008 to 6.42, representing a 2.6 percent decrease, according to the report.The report, however, did not give reasons for these trends.Experts think behavioral changes, particularly the decline in smoking, are partly responsible for the improvements.The report's lead author Kenneth Kochanek, a statistician at the center, said this is preliminary data, and the final data, which should be available this summer, may shed some light on the findings.

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Italian archaeologists are digging the remains of Lisa Gherardini, a 16th-century woman who is widely believed to be the model for the famous portrait Mona Lisa, AFP reported on Wednesday.The team of historians say they will try to find the remains using geo-radar equipment and then try to re-create a likeness of what the woman, Lisa Gherardini, would have looked like to compare her to Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa.Gherardini (1479-1542), also known by her married name as Lisa del Giocondo, was the wife of a Florentine silk merchant and is widely believed to have been the model for the  portrait that now hangs in the Louvre in Paris.But the issue has never been settled definitively and mystery still shrouds the model's enigmatic expression and other details of the portrait.
