NEW YORK — Indoor dining in New York City will close beginning Monday amid the rising spread of COVID-19 increased hospitalizations linked to the virus, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday.“We said that we would watch it if the hospitalization rate didn’t stabilize, we would close indoor dining. It is not,” Cuomo said.Outdoor dining and takeout will continue, he added. The increasing rate of transmission has been a problem, especially in densely populated areas, Cuomo said. The governor added that the state will monitor indoor dining data in areas outside of New York City and orange zones. Adjustments will be made next week if needed. When asked about a timeline on reopening the city's indoor dining, Cuomo's team said the state will be looking over cases and hospitalizations over the next two weeks.Earlier this week, Cuomo said any region with an unstable hospitalization rate for more than five days would see new restrictions on indoor dining. He said New York City would see a full closure on indoor dining while regions outside of the city would see a reduction to 25% capacity. Amid the announcement of closing indoor dining, Cuomo called on the federal government to provide restaurants and bars with relief in the next stimulus package. The state will do what it can to assist these businesses, including extending the commercial eviction moratorium, Cuomo said.“So, if a business can’t pay rent because of this situation, they won’t be evicted,” he said. The adjustments restaurants have made are "remarkable," Cuomo added. Heat lamps and partial enclosures are working, according to the governor, but he hopes that indoor dining closures will only be for a short period of time."I understand they're going to sustain economic damage, and I think the federal government should reimburse them for it. If the state is in a position to reimburse them for it, we will," he said. Restrictions on gyms and salons appear to be working and are not as much of a problem, so those businesses will be allowed to operate in orange zones with increased testing and regulations, Cuomo said.Capacity will be reduced to 25% and weekly testing will be mandated if in an orange zone. This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom and Kristine Garcia on WPIX in New York City. 2290

NEW YORK (AP) — A new report underscores that kids can bring the new coronavirus home from day care and infect relatives. The study released Friday comes from researchers in Utah and at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It focused on three outbreaks in Salt Lake City child care facilities between April and July. The study concluded 12 children caught the coronavirus at the facilities. They then spread it to at least 12 of the 46 parents or siblings that they came in contact at home. Scientists already know children can spread the virus. One infectious diseases researcher says the study “definitively indicates — in a way that previous studies have struggled to do — the potential for transmission to family members,” said William Hanage, a Harvard University infectious diseases researcher. The findings don’t mean that schools and child-care programs need to close, but it does confirm that the virus can spread within those places and then be brought home by kids. So, masks, disinfection and social distancing are needed. And people who work in such facilities have to be careful and get tested if they think they may be infected, experts said. 1175

NEW YORK (AP and KGTV) — Sears is closing 80 more stores, including six locations in San Diego, as it teeters on the brink of liquidation. The iconic retailer, once the nation's largest department store chain, set a deadline of Friday for bids for its remaining stores to avert closing down completely.Sears has not received any bids as of Friday afternoon. The retailer that began out as a mail order catalog in the 1880s has been in a slow death spiral, hobbled by the Great Recession and then overwhelmed by rivals both down the street and across the internet. The 80 stores are due to close by March. That's in addition to 182 stores already slated for closure, including 142 by the end of 2108 and 40 by February. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October , saying at the time it would close more than 20 percent of all stores, keeping open only its 500 most profitable locations.Sears Holdings Corp., which also runs Kmart, joins the list of retail brands taken over by hedge funds that collapsed under the weight of debt forced upon them.Under hedge fund manager Eddie Lampert, Sears has bought time by spinning off stores and putting on the block the brands that had grown synonymous with the company, such as Craftsman. The company's chairman and biggest shareholder, Lampert loaned out his own money and put together deals to keep the company afloat and to turn whatever profit he could for ESL hedge fund. Lampert and ESL have been trying to buy the rest of Sears for up to .6 billion in cash and stock. But no official bid appeared to have emerged as of 4 p.m. E.T. Friday. Sears declined to comment. 1642

NEW YORK (AP) — In a typical year, the newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class would have hit the stage and perform the well-known songs that made them famous and helped them enter the prestigious organization. Not in 2020.Because of the coronavirus pandemic, this year's all-star group was inducted Saturday night in a taped HBO special that told the stories of Whitney Houston, Notorious B.I.G. and the Doobie Brothers' rise to fame and how acts like Nine Inch Nails, T. Rex, and Depeche Mode heavily impacted the music industry and generations after them.According to the Los Angeles Times, Houston's mother/manager Cissy Houston accepted her induction on her behalf.Whitney was 48 when she passed away in 2012 after she accidentally drowned due to heart problems and cocaine use, ABC reported.According to Vulture, Houston, Biggie, and T. Rex founder Marc Bolan were three 2020 inductees honored after their deaths.Notorious B.I.G., who was shot and killed in 1997, was inducted by Sean "Diddy" Combs, Vulture reported.Bolan, who died in 1977, was inducted by the former drummer for the Beatles Ringo Starr, Rolling Stone reported. The induction ceremony was initially supposed to occur in May in Cleveland, the city where the Rock Hall is located. 1267
