EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Over two dozen people were displaced Sunday night after a fire ripped through an apartment building on Bradley Avenue in El Cajon. The fire started on the first floor of the building, inside of a unit that was being renovated. Witnesses told 10News they heard a commotion and people screaming there was a fire. Several neighbors say they stepped in to help using buckets of water to put out the flames. Firefighters say the fire appeared to have started inside the walls of the apartment with a plumbers torch that was being used during the renovation. Fire officials say the fire damaged four of the units, displacing 21 adults and 12 children. The Red Cross is providing shelter for the night for those displaced. One of the men working inside the apartment suffered a minor burn on his left hand but told 10News he was okay. 864

Efforts to build a House of Mexico in Balboa Park's International Cottage area are nearing a critical deadline for fundraising. The group needs to raise 0,000 by the end of the month, or they may have to abandon their plans."We've been on this journey for a long time," says House of Mexico President Sonia Ruiz.The City Council approved plans in 2016 to add 9 "houses" to the cottage area, representing Mexico, the Philippines, Peru, Panama, Korea, India, Palestine, Turkey and Lebanon. They'll share five new buildings. But cost estimates for construction have risen considerably since the approval.Ruiz says it looks like each House will need to pay about a half million dollars for their share of construction."We got the permits back in November," she says. "If we don't start construction within 180 days, we lose the permit."Ruiz adds that applying for a new construction permit would be time consuming and expensive.The House of Mexico was one of the original members of Balboa Park's House of Nations in 1935. But they left the group in 1941. Aside from one year, they didn't re-join until 2004.Since then, the House of Mexico has operated as a non-profit group. They've held numerous events at Balboa Park to showcase Mexican culture. But a physical building would help them expand their mission."We could offer Spanish classes, cooking classes, dance classes," Ruiz says. "We want to have rotating art and culture exhibits in the house."People around Balboa Park were surprised to learn that San Diego's closest international neighbor didn't have its own building among the houses."It's pretty astonishing," says Mark Levy, who walks through the park every day. "We should definitely build that before we put up a wall.""We're so close," says park visitor Pati Stives. "We're such a small world at the end of the day. We are neighbors; they should be here."The House of Mexico is trying to raise the money by the end of May. They have a button on their website for donations, and they're also selling bracelets that say "I Love Mexico" at events. Donald Trump attended an August 2015 meeting that federal prosecutors believe was central to a criminal scheme to violate campaign finance laws to help Trump win the presidency, according to a source familiar with the matter.According to court filings, Trump was joined by Michael Cohen, who was his attorney at the time, and David Pecker, the chairman of American Media Inc., parent company of the National Enquirer.During the meeting, the group discussed a plan to shield Trump from potentially damaging stories. Prosecutors say this amounted to illegal donations to Trump's campaign.Trump's attendance was first reported by the Wall Street Journal in a November article. The meeting returned to the spotlight Wednesday when federal prosecutors announced that they agreed not to prosecute AMI for campaign finance violations in exchange for its cooperation.The newspaper reported that Trump asked Pecker what he could do to help his presidential campaign.Federal prosecutors in Manhattan mentioned the meeting when they charged Cohen over the summer with two campaign finance violations. Those crimes related to hush-money payments to two women who alleged affairs with Trump. For his part, Trump has denied the affairs.Prosecutors also described the meeting in the AMI agreement, which became public Wednesday.That document said Cohen, Pecker, and "one or more members of the campaign" met in August 2015. At that meeting, "Pecker offered to help deal with negative stories about that presidential candidate's relationships with women by, among other things, assisting the campaign in identifying such stories so they could be purchased, and their publication avoided."AMI now admits that after that meeting, Pecker agreed to "keep Cohen appraised" of negative stories about Trump.
