FUZHOU, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of thousands of residents have been evacuated as Megi, the 13th typhoon to hit China this year, made landfall in Zhangzhou City in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.As of 2 p.m., 272,300 people have been evacuated, according to officials at the provincial department of civil affairs.Also, there was no immediate report of casualties in Fujian. BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The body of Peng Chong, a senior Chinese legislator and political advisor, was cremated at Beijing's Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery on Wednesday.President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, and state and Party leaders Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang and He Guoqiang bid a final farewell to Peng Chong.Peng, who had served as vice chairman of China's top legislature and the top political advisory body, died of illness in Beijing on Oct. 18 at an age of 96.Peng was also a member of the Political Bureau of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, vice chairman of the fifth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and vice chairman of the standing committees of the fifth, sixth and seventh National People's Congresses.He was described in an official statement as a "loyal Communist fighter," "proletarian revolutionist" and "outstanding leader of the CPC's political work and the construction of China's socialist legal system."

YUZHOU, Henan, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a coal mine gas leak in central China's Henan Province has risen to 32 after six more bodies were found, rescuers said Monday.Some 300 rescuers are still racing against the time to search the five miners remaining trapped despite slim chances of survival as they were feared buried in coal dust.More than 2,500 tonnes of coal dust smothered the pit after the gas leak, which hampered the rescue, said Du Bo, deputy chief of the rescue headquarters.The rescue efforts, however, are speeding up after the underground transport, power and ventilation systems have been restored, said Du.The gas outburst happened at 6:03 a.m. Saturday when 276 miners were working underground in the mine in Yuzhou City. A total of 239 workers escaped but 21 were found dead and 16 were trapped.An initial investigation showed that 173,500 cubic meters of gas leaked out in the accident.The mine is owned by Pingyu Coal & Electric Co. Ltd., a company jointly established by four investors, including Zhong Ping Energy Chemical Group and China Power Investment Corp..
