CANBERRA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting General Guo Boxiong, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission, and Australian Minister for Defense John Faulkner have vowed to strengthen exchanges between the armed forces of China and Australia.China and Australia shared common interests and desire in ensuring the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region, said a joint statement released by Guo and Faulkner Friday.The two sides hailed the development of their military-to-military relationship in recent years and said positive outcomes had been achieved through senior visits and exchanges in education, training and technical areas.Both sides agreed that strengthening open dialogue on defense and security issues between Australia and China was conducive to promoting bilateral relations.The statement said China and Australia were both pleased with the outcomes of the current visit and the opportunity it provided to further strengthen bilateral ties and military exchanges.The Sino-Australia defense relationship was an important part of bilateral ties and both sides would work concertedly to sustain sound and stable development in this regard, it said.Both countries should respect and take into full consideration each other's core interests and major concerns, and develop ties on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, the statement said. BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the boosting of efforts to prevent and control the hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) nationwide as the illness re-emerges in parts of the country."Spring and summer is a peak period for infectious diseases. Currently, preventing and controlling various infectious diseases such as the hand-foot-mouth disease is a key task," Li said Wednesday at a meeting on a nationwide health campaign.At least five children died of HFMD and another 9,863 cases have been reported in central China's Henan Province as of March 23. The local government has asked kindergartens and schools across the province to step up health checks of children.Li urged the acceleration of research into vaccines and drugs for the disease and a focus on prevention and control work in rural areas for the most vulnerable groups.HFMD is a common illness mainly affecting children under the age of 10. It usually starts with a slight fever which is followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet. It is spread through contact with saliva or feces of the infected.Li stressed related departments across the country should step up work to prevent and control A/H1N1 influenza with emergency plans and ample storage of vaccines, drugs and equipment.Li added that major events, including the 2010 Shanghai Expo, will be the key events for disease control and prevention.

GENEVA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday asked the World Trade Organization to set up an expert panel to rule whether the European Union's antidumping duties on Chinese-made footwear violates global trade regulations.At a meeting of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body, the Chinese delegation reiterated that the EU's antidumping measure was inconsistent with related WTO agreements and it impaired China's benefits."China requests the DSB to establish a panel to ensure the protection of China's legitimate rights and benefits under the WTO agreements," the delegation said in a statement.The delegation said that it was taking the action after the latest consultations with the EU on March 31 failed to resolve China's concerns and "no mutually satisfactory solution could be reached."The delegation's statement also urged the 27-nation bloc to bring its legislation in line with WTO agrements and "to terminate the measure on Chinese footwear on account of their inconsistency with WTO rules."The EU said it regretted the step take by China and blocked the panel request. But according to the WTO's dispute settlement procedures, a panel request can be blocked only once, which means the panel would be established automatically if China makes a second request at a DSB meeting scheduled for next month.China first brought the dispute to the WTO on Feb. 4, which initiated a 60-day consultation period between the two sides.A panel request is the second step in the WTO's dispute settlement procedure following unsuccesful consultations in finding a resolution.

TASHKENT, April 24 (Xinhua) -- China is willing to consolidate cooperation with all the other member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on safeguarding regional security and promoting collective prosperity, Chinese Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu said here Friday.Meng, also a Chinese State Councilor, made the remarks at the fifth session of the SCO Security Council Secretaries, which drew interior and public security ministers of SCO member states to prepare for a June summit of the organization in Tashkent.The SCO, a regional security organization founded in 2001, consists of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.Meng said that against the backdrop of complicated global and regional situations, it is important for SCO countries to deepen practical cooperation and safeguard regional stability by further coordinating cooperative mechanisms within the SCO framework.It was also important to seek collaboration and utilize various resources, he said.Meng noted the lingering effects triggered by the global financial crisis on economy and society, as well as the continuing threats from terrorism, extremism and separatism on regional security.
