SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy SEAL was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to molesting his relative in California.Gregory Kyle Seerden pled guilty to seven counts of molestation following a preliminary hearing in which the victim testified. According to the court, the abuse happened while Seerden was a Navy SEAL stationed in San Diego. "We can start healing today by making him answer for his crimes every day for the rest of his pathetic existence," Alicia Reppert said, reading a prepared testimony.Reppert is Seerden's ex-wife. She said on the stand, that her daughter endured abuse from her father, starting from when she was five years old. The Deputy District Attorney said the girl mustered up the courage to report her father's crimes in 2015. At the pretrial hearing in May, the now 12-year-old testified in front of a judge. The testimony was so powerful, Seerden pleaded guilty to seven of the nine counts of molestation, without going to trial. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison. Seerden is already serving a 27-year federal sentence for manufacturing child pornography. In 2017, Seerden was accused of of raping a woman while serving in the Navy in Virginia. When authorities searched his cell phone, they found child pornography, including a video of him abusing another 5 year-old relative, while she slept. "In California, you can use that evidence to corroborate molestation in this case," Deputy DA Amy Colby said. Seerden was arrested on April 3, 2017, for the case involving child pornography. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new report from California State University, San Marcos, shows San Diego County's craft beer industry continued its uphill climb last year.In 2018, San Diego County saw its craft brewing family grow to a total of 155 independent craft brewers, bringing the region to a total of 202 operating brewery locations, the report revealed. The study was compiled by CSUSM, the school's Office of Business Research and Analysis, and San Diego Brewers Guild.Data did show that brewery openings slowed starting in 2017, but have rose slightly since.The majority of breweries are packed into Central San Diego, hosting 55% of craft breweries in the county, the report says. North County holds the second largest piece, with 32.5% of breweries, following by East County with 8.1%, and the South Bay with 4.4%.RELATED: First-of-its-kind craft beverage project planned for EscondidoYear-over-year, craft beer's economic impact to San Diego grew 6% in 2018 to an estimated .2 billion. Since 2016, the region has seen a 34% rise in economic impact from the craft beer industry.In another measurement of craft beer's outlook in San Diego, the report's craft beer confidence index stood at 91, which the report says indicates a strong outlook over the next year. The index surveys how respondents feel about barrelage production, distribution, employment, and capital expenditures.The report, adding that San Diego will soon see its own Museum of Beer in 2020, highlights the region's outlook for craft beer, breweries, and the industry's impact.When it comes to the style of beer drinkers prefer most, nationwide IPAs took 25.2% of the market, followed by belgain white (20.6%), other styles (14.5%), seasonal (13.6%), and lagers (11.1%). SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new program at three San Diego-area community colleges is hoping to bridge the gap between minority students and their teachers.The Deber Program at Mesa, Southwestern, and City colleges hopes to encourage more bilingual people to become teachers."We don't have enough people of color in the classrooms," said Laurie Lorence, Teacher Education Director at Mesa College.The program will help recruit bilingual college students who want to become teachers. It will assist them throughout their college careers with applications, transfers, testing, and mentoring."We're hoping a lot of students want to give back to their community and reach down to give them a hand up," said Lorence.Right now, there's a wide disparity between the number of minority teachers and students of color in San Diego.According to the San Diego County Office of Education, 69% of students in local schools are students of color. But only 26.3% of teachers identify themselves as teachers of color. Bridging that gap can help minority students succeed."A student can look up at the teacher and say, 'Wow, if that person's done it, maybe I can too,'" said Lorence.For Karina Vidro, one of the students already in the Deber Program, the help it provides is vital."I know where I want to be, but I don't know all the details in between," she said. "So knowing that someone is going to be there to support me in that direction is fantastic."The Deber Program is funded through a five-year grant from San Diego State University. Lorence says the first few years will focus on Hispanic and LatinX students. They plan to expand to other minority groups after that. 1662

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A preliminary 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck in Inyo County, just north of Ridgecrest, on Wednesday.The quake occurred at about 10:40 a.m. in the Lone Pine area, about 60 miles north of Ridgecrest, according to the USGS. There have not been any immediate reports of injury or damage.The initial 5.8 earthquake was followed by several smaller shake-ups, ranging from magnitude 2.5 to 4.6.USGS's "Did You Feel It?" map reported the quake was felt as far away as Fresno to the north, Los Angeles to the south, and Las Vegas, Nev., to the east. There was no threat of a tsunami due to the quake, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.The earthquake comes a day after a 7.5-magnitude quake struck Mexico's southern coastline, just east of the popular tourist destination Huatulco, Oaxaca. 822

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego County public defense attorney is accused of providing a felon with a firearm, according to local law enforcement.  San Diego Police confirm that Andrea Bayer was arrested on August 1 and booked into Las Colinas women’s jail on charges related to selling, supplying or delivering a firearm to either a convicted felon or someone wanted on a felony warrant. She was released the same day on bond.  On the State Bar of California’s website, it shows that the 37 year-old’s license is still active and that she works as an Alternate Public Defender for San Diego County. The District Attorney’s Office says Bayer has not been charged and the case remains under review. A Group Communications Officer with San Diego County sent us the following statement: “The County of San Diego cannot comment on personnel matters. Ms. Bayer is currently on leave from her position pending the outcome of the investigation. The Public Defender believes in the presumption of innocence and has faith in the judicial process.” 1070
