CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Chula Vista’s next city manager will be the first Hispanic and first woman to serve in that role.Maria Kachadoorian, who has worked for the City of Chula Vista for 22 years, will move from her position as Assistant City Manager and take over for the retiring Gary Halbert.Halbert has served as the City Manager since 2014, and he has been with the city since 2008. He is set to retire on June 19.As the City Manager, Kachadoorian will be in charge of overseeing and maintaining the city’s budget. She will also “advance the Chula Vista Bayfront development, launch Ambulance Transport Services, and foster initiatives that better connect the City’s diverse communities.”In a statement, Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas said of Kachadoorian: “Maria has the knowledge, skills and vision we need to move the City forward during these unprecedented times. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District Board voted Wednesday to cut more than 220 educators and place its beleaguered superintendent on paid leave.Staff cuts include educators and all librarians. In all, the board voted to eliminate 223 employees in hopes of balancing its budget.The board cited a decline in enrollment for the cuts, but said if enrollment goes up, librarians would be the first to return.RELATED: Sweetwater Union High School District votes to cut over 200 jobsThe vote ratifies an earlier referendum in which the board voted to lay off nearly 240 employees and staff members in February. The district's planned cuts to jobs and programs had been widely panned by staff and the public, with many calling on officials to consider salary cuts instead. During February's board meeting, one teacher told the board that their proposal would "kill this community and hurt our kids."Several staff were supposed have received pink slips in March but the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing campus shutdowns temporarily staved off layoffs.The board also voted 4-1 Wednesday night to place SUHSD superintendent Dr. Karen Janney on paid administrative leave. She earned her doctorate degree in education from San Diego State University in 2010, according to her professional online profile. CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- Doctors believe exposure to the drug fentanyl caused an illness to an inmate and 27 staffers at an Ohio prison Wednesday.Officers, nurses and one inmate at the Ross Correctional Institution fell ill after exposure to “an unknown substance” Wednesday morning. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said troopers arrived on scene at about 9:10 a.m. A total of 28 people, including 23 correction officers, four nurses and an inmate were treated on scene and then driven to a hospital for evaluation. One inmate was treated at the scene and not taken to a hospital. Adena Regional Medical Center officials said 24 patients arrived there at about 9:30 a.m.Dr. Kirk Tucker, the chief clinical officer at Adena Regional Medical Center, said that the sickest patient, an inmate, arrived at the hospital unconscious and not breathing. The others had symptoms including nausea and vomiting, lightheadedness, numbness in hands and feet and heaviness in arms and legs.Fentanyl is "our best clinical guess" for what caused the symptoms, Tucker said. The drug is an opioid 50-100 times more potent than heroin.Caregivers administered five doses of Narcan, Tucker said. But health officials delivered hundreds of doses in case they were needed.Most of the patients were monitored for symptoms for a few hours and then released, according to Tucker. He said one patient has been admitted to the hospital for the night.Tucker called the large exposure "a once-in-a-lifetime event." He estimated the hospital had more than 100 staffers available to help, thanks to their regular ER personnel and emergency staffers brought in from other parts of the hospital.The fast response at the prison and emergency preparations at the hospital "probably saved a life or two," according to Tucker."This could have been a lot worse," he said.About 31 inmates who were not affected were removed from the cellblock and moved to other secure areas in the prison, troopers said. A hazardous material unit was cleaning affected areas of the prison, troopers said. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeowners in Eastlake are frustrated with a plan to develop a storage facility near their homes. The proposed location is in an empty space between Eastlake High School and Antigua, a gated community of townhomes. The facility would be a recreational storage facility, for boats, cars and containers. The City of Chula Vista's planning department would have to approve the proposal. Homeowners are hoping they don't. Neighbors like Carmen Bermen say the plans are going to lower their property values and attract the wrong crowd. On Saturday, they started posting warning flyers around their community to warn other neighbors. Bermen was the first homeowner to notice the plans. She says the city had sent out two notices in 2016. The last notice arrived on Thanksgiving week. 10News obtained a copy of that notice letting homeowners know they had until November 26th to send in any written comments or petitions. The vote would take place on November 27th. After emailing the city, residents say officials told them they'd have a public hearing in January on the issue, instead of voting on it in closed session. 10News reached out to the city for comment on this issue, a spokesperson told us it's up to the planning department to put the item on the agenda for the community to go and express their concerns during public comment. (KGTV) -- A high school Senior from Chula Vista was charged in Federal Court Monday for reportedly trying to recruit other students to smuggle drugs into the U.S.Court documents show that Phillip Junior Webb, who was a senior at Castle Park High School in 2017, recruited other high school students to smuggle methamphetamine and fentanyl into the U.S.According to the documents, starting in July of 2017, juveniles were caught trying to smuggle drugs by strapping the drugs to their bodies as they tried to enter the United States.RELATED: Teens targeted to smuggle Fentanyl across US-Mexico?On May 4, Web was reportedly caught trying to bring a Chinese national and Mexican national into the U.S. in the trunk of his vehicle.“We are seeing a very troubling trend and we want to warn parents and high schoolers,” said U.S. Attorney Adam L. We are going after the recruiters who exploit these kids, but the kids also need to know that they are gambling with their lives when they do this.
