(KGTV) — National Park Service biologists say they're seeing a boom in mountain lion births this summer in the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills areas.Between May and August, researchers have seen 13 total kittens born to five mountain lion mothers. This is the first time this many mountain lion dens have been found in such a short time period during the 18-year study, according to the National Park Service. A total of 21 litters of kittens have been marked at the den site. Previously, the most dens found in one year for the study was four in 2015."This level of reproduction is a great thing to see, especially since half of our mountains burned almost two years ago during the Woolsey Fire," said Jeff Sikich, a wildlife biologist who has been studying the mountain lion population at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. "It will be interesting to see how these kittens use the landscape in the coming years and navigate the many challenges, both natural and human-caused, they will face as they grow older and disperse."Since 2002, NPS has been studying mountain lions around the Santa Monica Mountains to determine how they survive in a fragmented and urbanized environment.To track the mountain lions, researchers wait until the mother leaves to hunt or feed. While researchers are tracking her movements, other researchers will approach the den to catalog the kittens and place a unique tag on the ear of each animal. There was a “concerning” increase in the number of drug overdoses in the US in from March through May 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.The data were part of an annual analysis of drug overdoses in the US. The data went from June 2019 through May 2020. The CDC noted that pre-pandemic drug overdoses were up in the month preceding the pandemic, but increased further when much of the US economy closed to stop the spread of the virus in March.The CDC previously estimated that 19,416 Americans died from drug overdoses from January through March 2020, which was up nearly 3,000 deaths. Approximately 81,230 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States in the 12-months ending in May 2020, the CDC reported. For the year ending in May, there were nearly 10,000 additional drug overdose deaths compared to the previous year.The CDC said that synthetic opioids, primarily illicitly manufactured fentanyl likely drove the increase. The American Medical Association says that there has been a 37% drop in prescriptions of opioids since 2014.“The increase in overdose deaths is concerning.” said Deb Houry, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. “CDC’s Injury Center continues to help and support communities responding to the evolving overdose crisis. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the Trump administration remains willing to work on a bipartisan agreement to help small businesses, the unemployed, children and schools afftected by the coronavirus outbreak. Mnuchin at a hearing Tuesday accused Democratic leaders of holding up an agreement with hard-line positions. Democrats insist that dire economic conditions persist and say a larger relief package is needed. "I believe a bipartisan agreement still should be reached and would provide substantial funds for schools, testing, vaccines, PPP for small businesses, continued enhanced unemployment benefits, child care, nutrition, agriculture, and the US Postal Service, along with liability protection for universities, schools and business," Mnuchin said. The sides had largely agreed on providing many Americans with a second stimulus check of ,200 before talks broke down in early August. Outside of the direct payments, the sides disagreed on a number of issues. Mnuchin and top congressional Democrats have been in a monthslong stalemate over new relief legislation, with the two sides trillions of dollars apart. Lawmakers left Washington for the August recess without an agreement. At the end of July, a 0 per week unemployment supplement expired. Also funding from the Paycheck Protection Program has long been depleted.
