CHANDLER, Ariz. - A woman in the East Valley of Arizona was stung by bees more than 200 times and a few fellow runners just happened to be in the right place--and the right time--to help.Usually cooler weather keeps bees away, but with more trees and flowers in bloom after the recent rain, experts say the bees are sticking around."I was taking my dog out for a walk, it's a normal route," said Marisa Brazil.Her daily routine along Paseo Trail in Chandler took a terrifying turn Monday morning."She was starting to flail her arms and I kind of looked at my best friend, Julie, and said, 'she's either having a really good time or something's happening,'" Brazil said.It did not take long for both women to realize something terrible was happening to the runner ahead of them on the trail."She was really screaming, like loud," said Julie Sternberg. The trained lifeguard ran to help while Brazil called 911."I tried to run up the other side and then some bees came at me," Sternberg said.Sternberg was stung on her head as the bees forced her back. She then saw two other strangers battling their way forward."They kept retreating. So at that point once I figured out there was bees, I figured out that's why. I saw one guy kept moving back," said Sternberg. "She was still screaming the whole entire time, so it was pretty scary," said Brazil.First responders eventually took over. The woman who was stung posted to Facebook from her hospital bed, thanking the strangers who tried to help. The woman who was stung is expected to recover. Her family said she was released from the hospital Monday afternoon.Now Brazil is warning others to be on alert."Just letting people in my community know that there is something going on there," Brazil said.A technician at The BEEHIVE Bee and Wasp Removal in Gilbert said if you find yourself surrounded by a swarm, swatting is the worst thing to do because that only agitates the bees. He says the best thing to do in a similar situation is remain calm, cover your face and nose, and run as fast as you can away from the area. 2126

Financially, it’s also taken a disproportionate toll.Ozzy Gamez’s neighborhood storefront looks a lot like an indoor jungle.“Our main focus has been indoor houseplants, tropical cacti, anything weird and exotic, strange,” said Gamez.Co-owned by his long-time friend and business partner Juan Quezada, they own "The Plant Shop."“It feels good to come into work and just put my hands on some soil and just kind of bond with people over something that's very natural, very organic,” said Quezada.For many in the Latino community, a connection to caring and nurturing plants is intertwined with family and culture. Gamez grew up in Belize, surrounded by tropical plants.“When I was growing up, it was kind of all around,” said Gamez. “My grandfather would plant things and grow things, whether it was for the animals he was raising or whether it's for us.”“I am Mexican, so I think that in my culture, it plays a big role,” said Quezada. “My mother always used plants for remedies, even as small as like aloes. I had a little cut, she always used that.”According to the Pew Research Center, the pandemic has hit Latinos especially hard. About 6 in 10 Latinos, 59%, in May said they live in households that have experienced job losses or pay cuts due to the coronavirus outbreak.Many have found solace during the pandemic in reconnecting with plants, returning to their roots.“You start thinking about where you came from and thinking about your ancestors,” said Gamez. “Not only think about them, but the places that were meant for me and I start thinking that kind of links it all. It's plants.”Gamez and Quezada have been fortunate. Business has been good to them during the pandemic.Despite having to limit the number of customers in the store, demand has increased. They’ve had to double their staff to keep up.“Our customers are great,” said Quezada. “They completely understand whether they have to wait outside for a second or you have to sanitize your hands coming in or wearing a mask.”Regulars like Glenn Gallet say it’s all worth it.“The amount of rare plants and things I'd never seen before, things I've lusted after, I spent a lot of money here over the years. CEDAR PARK, TX — Three police officers were shot Sunday while responding to a call in Cedar Park, Texas, according to police.The three officers suffered non-fatal injuries while responding to the call on Sunday afternoon and are currently stable at a local hospital.The shooting began an hours-long standoff that lasted throughout the evening on Sunday and well into Monday morning. Two hostages were released from the home on Monday morning at about 8 a.m. CT. About an hour later, a third hostage and the suspect emerged from the home peacefully.Preliminary information obtained by ABC News says the incident started as a domestic dispute. 650
