With Congress debating the next economic relief package, American workers are set to lose additional unemployment money at the end of the week.The crisis has affected all sorts of workers, but one particular group is less likely to be able to recover – the older workforce.AARP found 30% of older workers lost jobs or income because of COVID-19.Research from the Great Recession found it takes older Americans twice as long to get back into the workforce. If they do, they almost always never end up making the money they used to.AARP is also concerned businesses might be reluctant to hire older workers because of the increased risk to the virus.“There’s now five generations for the first time ever in the workforce, so having that diverse age will actually help in bringing products and services to the market that appeal to a wide range of age of people,” said Susan Weinstock, VP of Financial Resilience at AARP.Prior to the pandemic, businesses were looking to recruit older workers because of their unique soft skills: being empathetic, calm under pressure, and a good listener.Multigenerational workforces tend to be more efficient, productive and have fewer errors and absenteeism.“Think about something that happened at work when you are 25 and then when you are 55 and something similar happens you have some perspective you can bring,” said Weinstock.AARP has resources specific for older workers affected by the pandemic, including a jobs board with a lot of remote work for those concerned about going to work in person. 1543

WILMINGTON, Del. – Joe Biden said in a speech Wednesday that his campaign believes it’s clear that they’re on track to win enough states to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.“I’m not here to declare that we’ve won, but I am here to report that when the count is finished, we believe we'll be the winners,” said the former vice president from Wilmington, Delaware.Watch his speech below:Biden’s remarks came around the same time that The Associated Press projected he would win Wisconsin, bringing him to 248 electoral votes as of about 4 p.m. ET. At that same time, President Donald Trump had racked up 214.“Of all the votes counted, we have won Wisconsin by 20,000 votes, virtually the same margin as when Trump won that state four years ago,” said Biden.Biden is also leading in Michigan and Nevada, but by slim margins. If he were to claim those two states as well, he would reach the crucial 270-vote threshold.“In Michigan, we lead by over 35,000 votes and it’s growing,” said Biden. “It’s a substantially bigger margin than when President Trump won Michigan in 2016.”As for Pennsylvania, The Associated Press still had Trump leading, but Biden had made steady advances throughout Wednesday.“I feel very good about Pennsylvania. With five weeks remaining in the college football season, the College Football Playoff selection committee unveiled the first poll, and there is little surprise at who is at the top. Alabama, the defending national champs, was ranked No. 1 in the poll released Tuesday, followed by the 2017 champs No. 2-ranked Clemson. With Alabama and Clemson both sporting unbeaten records, it is not surprising to see the two squads at the top of the ranking. But the selection committee's third choice might leave some fans scratching their head. Rather than picking unbeaten Notre Dame at No. 3, the selection committee slotted one-loss LSU as the third pick. Notre Dame, who has a win over Michigan who is ranked at No. 5 in the CFP ranking, was at No. 4. With the toughest part of Notre Dame's schedule in the past, and no remaining Top 25 games remaining on the schedule, the Irish's chances of making the College Football Playoff are in question given that a one-loss team is already ahead of Notre Dame. A group of other one-loss teams are poised to potentially overtake Notre Dame at the No. 4 spot since most of those squads will get the opportunity to play in a conference title game. With Notre Dame being an independent, the Irish do not get the benefit of playing in a conference championship. Behind Michigan is a quintet of teams sporting 7-1 records going into Week 9. White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told reporters Wednesday that President Donald Trump wants to continue working from the Oval Office despite being infected with COVID-19.According to CNN and CBS, Meadows told reporters that the White House would be taking extra precautions to allow Trump to do so. According to CBS reporter Ben Tracy, any White House staff coming in contact with the president will wear gowns, gloves, masks and eye protection.It's unclear if Trump would also wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in the Oval Office.Following Meadows' statement to reporters, Larry Kudlow, the Director of the United States National Economic Council, said during an appearance on CNBC that Trump visited the West Wing with those added precautions on Tuesday.Medical experts say that while PPE greatly reduces the spread of COVID-19, it cannot prevent the spread of the virus entirely.
