For nearly a decade, the US Mint has produced "America the Beautiful" quarters that pay homage to various sites in all US states and territories. But the newest quarter to be minted got quite a response on social media this week. The newest coin, which will enter circulation next month, will honor American Samoa by depicting an image from the National Park of American Samoa."The reverse (tails) design depicts a Samoan fruit bat mother hanging in a tree with her pup," US Mint said in a description of the coin. "The image evokes the remarkable care and energy that this species puts into their offspring. The design is intended to promote awareness to the species’ threatened status due to habitat loss and commercial hunting. Former Peruvian president Alan Garcia died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head as police were preparing to arrest him on corruption charges Wednesday.His death was confirmed by current President Martin Vizcarra, who expressed his condolences over Twitter."Devastated by the death of former President Alan Garcia, I send my condolences to his family and loved ones," Vizcarra wrote.Garcia, 69, was rushed to the hospital in the capital Lima on Wednesday in critical condition, the state news agency Andina reported."The former president made the decision to shoot himself," his lawyer Erasmo Reyna said outside the Casimiro Ulloa hospital.Carlos Morán, the interior minister, said in an interview with CNN affiliate TV Peru that police arrived at Garcia's home at 6.30 a.m. to execute an arrest warrant.When police arrived, Garcia asked them to call his attorney and then he entered his bedroom, Morán said. FORT PIERCE, Fla. — The female volunteer at the Humane Society of St. Lucie County, Florida, who was found dead inside a fenced play area next to the shelter Thursday died of severe blood loss due to dog bites, according to the St. Lucie County Medical Examiner's Office.It ruled the death accidental.The Human Society of St. Lucie County has identified the woman as Christine Liquori."The dogs here have lost a dear dear friend and we’ve lost a dear dear friend and wonderful volunteer. Whatever needs to be done for those dogs, Christine was there for it whether it was walking them, bathing them, playing with them, loving on them, taking their picture," Humane Society of St. Lucie County Executive Director David Robertson said Friday before the medical examiner revealed its results.He said a mixed-breed dog was with Liquori at the time and had no prior issues. The dog had been at the shelter for about 8 days prior to the incident.
