CHICAGO — Millions of frontline healthcare workers are rolling up their sleeves for the first of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine. First out is Pfizer’s vaccine, and now, an FDA panel has recommended Moderna’s vaccine for emergency use authorization. The available Pfizer shot requires a complex and precise procedure for it to work. Before the needle even breaks the skin, a strict protocol must be followed precisely.“We're going to put it take it from the negative 80 ultra-low storage and we're gonna defrost it to refrigerator temperatures,” explained Erin Shaughnessy, director of pharmacy at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “That's gonna give us five days of stability for the vaccine.”It’s like something out of Mission Impossible.“We installed additional security cameras and we have additional security protocols,” said Shaughnessy. She’s charged with ensuring the vaccine is securely handled and properly prepped before it’s injected.“We don't want to risk wasting any of the drugs,” she said. “The stuff is liquid gold right now.”That liquid gold must be stored at 80 below zero, in a secure location that only a few pharmacists have access to.“We have to take it out of the ultra-low freezer and move it to a refrigerator just to thaw for three hours.”Once thawed, it cannot be re-stored.“You can't put the medication back into the freezer,” said Shaughnessy. “Once inside, you have to use it or you're going to lose it. It's gonna have a five-day refrigerated expiration.”Pfizer’s vaccine protocol also requires the vaccine to be protected from UV light and the dilution must be gently inverted exactly 10 times. Shaken too hard, says Shaughnessy, and it could go bad.“It's very, very specific," she explained. That’s when the clock starts ticking.“Once they're thawed and reconstituted, basically diluted down to make the actual doses, then that's when we have six hours on the clock going from that dilution point into someone's arm,” said Luke Hvass, a clinical pharmacist at Rush. Each dose is recorded and logged. It’s a symphony of procedures that must come together like clockwork.“It's a lift for a lot of hospitals, a lot of organizations, but I think it's a challenge everybody is ready to rise to because everyone is so excited about getting this vaccine process started,” said Shaughnessy. The Department of Health and Human Services has expanded the scope of who can act as vaccinators. In addition to pharmacists, interns, pharmacy students and pharmacy technicians who complete 20 hours of training will be added to the vaccination workforce to help handle the massive undertaking. 2619

Bulked-up, mutant “mighty mice” held onto their muscle during a monthlong stay at the International Space Station, returning to Earth with ripped bodybuilder physiques, scientists reported Monday. The findings hold promise for preventing muscle and bone loss in astronauts on prolonged space trips like Mars missions, as well as people on Earth who are confined to bed or need wheelchairs.A research team led by Dr. Se-Jin Lee of the Jackson Laboratory in Connecticut sent 40 young female black mice to the space station in December, launching aboard a SpaceX rocket. In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Lee said the 24 regular untreated mice lost considerable muscle and bone mass in weightlessness as expected — up to 18%.But the eight genetically engineered “mighty mice” launched with double the muscle maintained their bulk. Their muscles appeared to be comparable to similar “mighty mice” that stayed behind at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. In addition, eight normal mice that received “mighty mouse” treatment in space returned to Earth with dramatically bigger muscles. The treatment involves blocking a pair of proteins that typically limit muscle mass.A SpaceX capsule brought all 40 mice back in good condition, parachuting into the Pacific off the California coast in January. Some of the ordinary mice were injected with the “mighty mice” drug after returning and quickly built up more muscle than their untreated companions, Lee said. The scientists completed the experiment just as the coronavirus was hitting the U.S.“The only silver lining of COVID is that we had time to write it up very intensively” and submit the results for publication, said Dr. Emily Germain-Lee of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Lee’s wife who also took part in the study. Both are affiliated with the University of Connecticut. While encouraged by their findings, the couple said much more work needs to be done before testing the drug on people to build up muscle and bone, without serious side effects.“We’re years away. But that’s how everything is when you go from mouse to human studies,” Germain-Lee said.Lee said the experiment pointed out other molecules and signaling pathways worth investigating — “an embarrassment of riches ... so many things we’d like to pursue.” His next step: possibly sending more “mighty mice” to the space station for an even longer stay.Three NASA astronauts looked after the space mice, performing body scans and injections: Christina Koch and Jessica Meir, who performed the first all-female spacewalk last fall, and Andrew Morgan. They are listed as co-authors.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - NASA launched another of the world's most advanced weather satellites on Thursday, this time to safeguard the western U.S.The GOES-S satellite thundered toward orbit aboard an Atlas V rocket, slicing through a hazy late afternoon sky. Dozens of meteorologists gathered for the launch, including TV crews from the Weather Channel and WeatherNation.GOES-S is the second satellite in an approximately billion effort that's already revolutionizing forecasting with astonishingly fast, crisp images of hurricanes, wildfires, floods, mudslides and other natural calamities.RELATED: NASA's James Webb Space Telescope Launch Might Be Delayed - AgainThe first spacecraft in the series, GOES-16, has been monitoring the Atlantic and East Coast for the past year for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . The same first-class service is now coming to the Pacific region.Besides the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii, GOES-S also will keep watch over Mexico and Central America. It will become GOES-17 once it reaches its intended 22,000-mile-high orbit over the equator in a few weeks, and should be officially operational by year's end."We can't wait!" tweeted the National Weather Service in Anchorage just before the rocket soared from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.RELATED: SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket finally launches after two liftoff delaysThe weather service's Jim Yoe said on NASA TV that he was "really excited" to see his first launch in person."I'm even more excited about the work that's coming up for me and my colleagues, putting these new data to work for better forecasts and warnings for the American public," said Yoe, an official at the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation. With these two new satellites, NOAA's high-definition coverage will stretch from the Atlantic near West Africa, a hotbed for hurricane formation, all the way across the U.S. and the Pacific out to New Zealand.RELATED: Satellite lost by NASA discovered 12 years laterIt's the third weather tracker launched by NASA in just over a year: "three brilliant eyes in the sky," as NOAA satellite director Stephen Volz puts it. GOES-16 launched in late 2016 and an environmental satellite rocketed into a polar orbit from California last November. These next-generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites, or GOES, are "a quantum leap above" the federal agency's previous weather sentinels, Volz said. This is the 18th launch of a GOES since 1975; one was lost in an explosion during liftoff and all but three of the satellites already up there are retired. Rockets by United Launch Alliance, a venture between Lockheed Martin and Boeing, carried all those GOES.Even as it was still being checked in orbit, GOES-16 provided invaluable data to firefighters battling blazes in Texas, Oklahoma and elsewhere last March and to Houston-area rescue teams in the flooded aftermath of Hurricane Harvey last August, according to officials. GOES-16 also observed the uncertain path of Hurricanes Irma and the rapidly intensifying Hurricane Maria in September.RELATED: SpaceX Plans To Bring High-Speed Internet To BillionsGOES-16 "turned out to be better than we expected it to be," said National Weather Service director Louis Uccellini, on hand for Thursday's launch. The satellite wasn't officially on duty yet, "and we were just standing there gawking at the imagery,"As Hurricane Harvey approached the Texas coast, the satellite revealed the clouds sinking in the eye and the eye expanding as the storm morphed from a category 2 to 4, Uccellini said. Those images helped determine when it was safe for rescue teams to go out and save stranded residents, he added. The satellite also alerted authorities in Texas and Oklahoma to the eruption of new blazes even before the 911 calls came in, Uccellini said. He said the satellite also tracked the direction of the fires like never before, prompting first responders to later tell NOAA: "You saved lives."RELATED: Report: NASA Is Planning To Privatize International Space StationTwo more are planned in this four-satellite series: GOES-T in 2020 and GOES-U in 2024. The .8 billion cost includes the development, launch and operation of all four satellites as well as ground systems through 2036. 4290

CHICAGO, Ill. -- By now, you may have heard about the extreme right-wing conspiracy theory known as “QAnon.” Its followers believe in a secret “deep state plot” against President Donald Trump. On Wednesday, for the first time, the president not only acknowledged the conspiracy theorists, but praised them.“These are people that don’t like seeing what’s going in in places like Portland and places like Chicago and New York and other cities and states. And I’ve heard these are people who love our country,” said Trump.Last week, GOP candidate, 9/11 conspiracy theorist and QAnon supporter Marjorie Taylor Greene won her house primary runoff election in Georgia.“Cheryl Mills said to Hilary Clinton I’m going to sacrifice a chicken in my backyard to Moloch. If that’s not evidence that there’s Satan worship in our government…” said Greene in one video posted online.Experts say the win was a signal that conspiracy theorists are breaking into the political mainstream. President Trump tweeted out his support for Greene after the win and congratulated her."She comes from a great state and she had a tremendous victory, so absolutely, I did congratulate her," said the president at a White House press briefing last week.People who study QAnon say it’s a virtual cult that pushes a baseless global conspiracy that a cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles who traffic children are led by prominent Democrats and celebrities like Hilary Clinton and Tom Hanks.“There’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to take this global cabal of Satan worshipping pedophiles out and I think we have the president to do it,” said Greene in an online video. The movement was started in 2017 by an anonymous poster claiming to have classified information about a secret plot by the so-called “deep state” against President Trump and his supporters."I don't know much about the movement other than I understand they like me very much, which I appreciate," said Trump to reporters on Wednesday when asked about his take on the QAnon conspiracy theorists who support him.Followers use the hashtag: #wwg1wga, short for their motto: “Where we go one, we go all.”In June “Q” encouraged followers to take a “digital soldier’s oath,” something former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn did via tweet on July 4.“Conspiracy theories arise in moments of crisis in society,” explained Dr. Daniel Jolley, a senior lecturer at Northumbria University who studies the psychology of conspiracy theories.“If a credible source is saying ‘yes, I endorse this particular viewpoint’ that is going to have a bit of a way where people start taking more notice to what the person is saying,” said JolleyAn unpublished intelligence bulletin from the FBI last year listed QAnon among “conspiracy theory-driven domestic extremists” that very likely motivate “criminal and sometimes violent activity.”Still, according to liberal watchdog group Media Matters for America, 20 candidates – 19 of them Republican – who have expressed support for QAnon have qualified for the November ballot. This week, Illinois Republican Adam Kinzinger posted a YouTube video calling for leaders to disavow QAnon.“Denouncing conspiracy theories shouldn’t be the exception. They really should be the rule,” said Kinzinger in the video. And while Twitter and Facebook have blocked thousands of “Q” supporters, Jolley says that may not be enough.“The conspiracy theories are not a new thing. So, if I remove them from social media, that may stop the reach, they will still exist. They would just exist at other platforms.” 3566
