(KGTV) — El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells said he plans to call for a special City Council meeting on Friday to discuss instructing local police officers not to enforce coronavirus-related regulations."The people of El Cajon are suffering and it is highly unfair and nonsensical that big box stores, grocery stores, club stores and now even schools are open while nail salons, restaurants, churches, and other businesses and organizations are shuttered," Wells wrote on Facebook. "My people are suffering from not only financial ruin, but many are enduring severe depression, anxiety, isolation, and many other emotional, spiritual and sociological deprivations as a result of this stunning governmental overreach."Wells wrote that he will propose that the El Cajon Police Department stop enforcing mask, non-essential business, and social distancing laws.Speaking with ABC 10News, Wells said that he understands that the county and state may continue to hand out fines or criminal charges on businesses despite the stance. He added that he takes the virus extremely seriously but the mental health issues surrounding restrictions are too much."I don't enjoy taking a stand like this, this isn't going to be any fun. But I think my responsibility to the people are more important than my comfort," Wells, a mental health professional, said. "I want to emphasize I'm not telling people not to wear masks. I'm not telling people not to social distance. (KGTV) – The superintendent of an El Cajon senior living apartment complex says police told him they have arrested a suspect in a series of robberies that have taken place on the sidewalk in front of the building. The arrest comes less than 24 hours after a 10News story aired surveillance video showing two of the muggings outside the Salvation Army apartments on South Anza Street."I actually jumped up and down with excitement," said super Alex Harmon, describing his reaction to the news. He says the surveillance video was key evidence. Harmon says there have been at least five incidents between October 15 and December 24. In one instance, the thief and a possible accomplice are seen carefully observing resident, May Kanao, while passing her on the street. The thief then turned and followed Kanao around the corner. He attempted to rip the gold chain off her neck, coming away with the gold cross which had been attached. The thief is then seen running back down South Anza St. In the other incident, which took place in October, the thief is seen engaging a 97-year-old resident who uses a walker in conversation, convincing her to open her bag. He quickly rifled through it, grabbed her wallet, and walked away.10News contacted the El Cajon Police Department. Dr. Anthony Fauci delivered more good news regarding a potential coronavirus vaccine, indicating some Americans could begin getting vaccinated by the end of this month.During an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said it’s possible a vaccine could begin reaching some Americans by the end of the month, but was confident some would begin getting vaccinated by the end of the year.Fauci’s declaration came on the same day Pfizer said that its Phase 3 vaccine candidate was showing an effectiveness of over 90%. Fauci said the announcement was promising, but a few more questions need to be addressed before it is given approval. Fauci said that things like the vaccine’s durability and effect on the elderly are among concerns that still need to be tackled.“We may have doses that we’re able to give to people by the end of November, beginning of December,” Fauci told CNN’s Blitzer. “Now you have to go through the hoops of making sure all of the I’s are dotted and the T’s are crossed about the safety and regulatory aspects of it, but we would be giving vaccine, very likely, by the end of this year. That is good news.”Last month, the FDA put into place guidelines on approving a vaccine, which was more restrictive than what the White House had hoped for. (KGTV) - 10 people escaped a fire that destroyed a motor home and damaged a house in El Cajon Saturday.The flames broke out at 3:25 a.m. on Emerald Ave., Heartland Fire crews said.A motor home parked in the carport suffered the most damage but parts of the house were gutted.Two people inside the motor home and eight people in the house were not hurt.They declined help from the Red Cross.Heartland Fire investigators are looking into what caused the fire. 482
