Millions of Americans have fallen into poverty waiting for Congress to pass another stimulus package.“It seems like every time we get really, really close, then nothing transpires,” said Elizabeth Pancotti, a policy advisor at Employ America. “There is a sense of urgency within the halls of Congress, but that same urgency was there in July when the 0 top off expired.Pancotti added that in addition to new help from Congress, millions of people may be unaware of programs already in place to help. In fact, those who have lost their job and can’t afford to pay rent should consider three programs many people don’t know about, especially if they have never needed this kind of help before.“The first one is SNAP, or more commonly known as food stamps. That could provide 0 to 0 per week,” explained Pancotti. “The second program is TANF, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.”It is important to note that SNAP benefits can only be used for food. Additionally, SNAP benefit amounts can vary from state to state and can vary by family size. On average, an individual receives a maximum benefit of around 0 per month, while a family of four can usually receive around 0 per month. However, a family of six can receive around 0 a month and, in some states, every additional family member could add around 0 in benefits a month.TANF is only for families, adults with children, and there is usually a work requirement. However, many states are relaxing the work requirement during the pandemic, and ultimately, most families are receiving 0 to 00 a month in financial assistance.“The third program is going to be on a state-by-state basis, so some UI, or unemployment insurance offices, have tried to extend benefits for longer, or tried to top off benefits,” added Pancotti. "For example, in the District of Columbia, they are planning to send checks to every PUA worker.”With all three programs, it could take up to 30 days to get enrolled, so it is recommended that those in need apply now and apply even with a new stimulus package.“Even if Congress comes to an agreement this week, it is very likely that for most, if not all UI recipients, there will be a lag in getting those top off payments,” explained Pancotti. "If there is a 0-0 top off, it will be weeks before that starts showing up on checks. It will be weeks before people who are kicked out of the system will be brought back in.” 2440

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Hurricane Iota is moving across northern Nicaragua with hurricane strength winds of around 85 mph after making landfall as a dangerous Category 4 storm. Iota came ashore along almost exactly the same stretch of Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast that was devastated by an equally powerful Hurricane Eta just 13 days earlier. Iota had intensified into an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm during the day Monday, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center says it weakened slightly as it neared the coast late Monday and made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 kph). Eta’s torrential rains saturated the soil in the region, meaning Iota's rains have nowhere to go and could cause deadly landslides. In their 7 a.m. update, the National Hurricane Center said Iota is expected to create "flash flooding, landslides, life-threatening storm surge and powerful winds across portions of Central America Tuesday."The NHC says Iota is moving west, further inland, and will move across Honduras Tuesday night into Wednesday. Hurricane Eta, after making landfall in Nicaragua, spun back out east into the Gulf of Mexico where it regained strength and dropped torrential rains on the western side of Florida and up into the southeast states of the U.S. Iota is expected to continue heading west across Central America, reaching El Salvador and southern Guatemala. 1390

McDonald's is investing billion into their fast-food chains. Franchises across the country will be getting a new modern, high-tech look. The fast-food mogul says these updates will enhance the guest experience. Not only is it great for business, but it's great for communities. Franchise operator Laura Bucar says in her 40 years of doing business, McDonald's has never invested this much money into it's existing chains. "When we decide to move on anything, what that creates for the community, as far as jobs and resources, is incredible,” says Bucar. In order to create an incredible experience, McDonald's is investing millions of dollars into nearly every state to update their restaurants.“We just finished ours in July, and I can’t tell you how many electricians and plumbers locally that were sourced to come in, and even digital and technical people and so it really adds to the economy,” says Bucar. Each fast food restaurant is able to customize their artwork inside. Bucar is excited to give visibility to local artists. Not only is McDonald's offering jobs in the community for construction workers, but they are also adding a handful of positions inside their restaurants, too. They include mobile service pickup, table service and a guest enhancement lead (GEL). The GEL will help guest use the new kiosks to order their food when in a rush.  1432

Many Starbucks locations will close on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. local time to allow for employees to participate in racial-bias education. All Starbucks company-owned retail stores and corporate offices will be closed in the afternoon of Tuesday, May 29. Franchised locations are not participating in Tuesday's training. The training was announced last month after a store manager called police to forcibly remove two African-Americans for loitering. The incident drew criticism and calls for boycott against Starbucks.  "The company's founding values are based on humanity and inclusion," said executive chairman Howard Schultz, who joined Johnson and other senior Starbucks leaders in Philadelphia to meet with community leaders and Starbucks partners. "We will learn from our mistakes and reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for every customer."Starbucks has updated its store hours online. MARTINEZ, Calif. (AP) — Anti-racism protesters took to the streets Sunday in a San Francisco Bay Area city where two people were charged with hate crimes after allegedly defacing a city-sanctioned “Black Lives Matter” mural. The two were charged July 7, the same day that police in Martinez were called to investigate after someone painted “White Lives Matter” on a city street. Activists organized Sunday’s march after police found flyers threatening Black Lives Matter supporters in the name of a white-power group. Police are investigating the “White Lives Matter” graffiti. Detectives are searching for witnesses and video surveillance. 648
