After smoking cigarettes for 15 years, Joe Vondruska decided to make a change in his life. “I have not smoked a combustible cigarette in over seven years. Knowing that, I wanted to spend the rest of my life healthy with my wife, I looked for an alternative to ingest my nicotine,” Joe Vondruska said.For him, that alternative was vaping. His wife Monica says the switch has been beneficial for the both of them.“I’m not smelling cigarette smoke in the morning when I wake up. I’m not hearing him cough and hack loogies off the front deck,” Monica Vondruska said.Monica says multiple people in her life have used vape products to quit traditional smoking. In fact, that’s one of the biggest reasons she and Joe decided to open a vape shop.“We all know that smoking kills, we’ve known that since the 60s and yet today we still have people smoking. In order for us to get that smoking rate down, there needs to be a viable option for people,” Monica Vondruska said.But is vaping a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes? Pulmonary Physician Jeff Sippel with UCHealth in Colorado says first you have to look at the differences between the two. “Smoking of tobacco and marijuana leaves has both dust particulate matter and oils – that’s the tar aspect that someone inhales. Whereas vaping is purified oil from a plant – it’s extracted from a plant,” Dr. Sippel said.According to Dr. Sippel, people who vape aren’t exposed to the harmful particles of combustible cigarettes. However, both products contain oils, which he says isn’t great for the lungs either. “Our lungs like water, our lungs don’t like oil. And so if we vape or smoke, and we get oil products into our lungs, that’s when we have problems,” Dr. Sippel said.Dr. Sippel says vape products often have more concentrated oils of flavoring, CBD, or THC, and that’s why we’re seeing some lung-related illnesses emerge. Consequently, Dr. Sippel says vaping is still a health risk and can’t be recommended by doctors as a good alternative to traditional smoking. Nevertheless, when you put the two side by side, he says there is more evidence to show combustible cigarettes are worse.“We could say that vaping is probably the lesser of two evils.” Dr. Sippel says it will take more time to really study the potential risks to vaping.“Lung cancer as an example takes 20 to 50 years for someone to have that condition related to smoking. So what we don’t know is what is the vaping risk going to look like 20 to 50 years from now,” Dr. Sippel said.He says e-cigarettes haven’t been around long enough for medical professionals to know the extent of their impact. But as a pulmonary physician, Dr. Sippel suggests staying away from both.“I think a goal for this whole category of smoking and vaping would be for somebody to go from their current state of affairs, to less, to zero. And ultimately a goal is zero cigarettes or zero vaping, because that’s in somebody’s health best interest,” Dr. Sippel said.The Vondruska family has witnessed some people achieving that goal with the help of vaping. ”We don’t mind if people get off vaping at all because we’re still a community and we’re still a family and they still drop in which is pretty neat. Probably one of the neatest things about opening a vape shop,” Monica Vondruska said.It’s that community the Vondruskas feel is necessary to help people quit their smoking habit if that’s what they desire. Whatever the case, they stick together like a family. “For years and years and years we’ve been demonized as smokers and kind of outcasted. And when you have a support system of ‘ok let’s step your nicotine down. If this is your goal, let’s do it’. American Airlines is extending flight cancellations into mid-August because of the Boeing 737 Max grounding.American, the world's largest airline, decided to extend cancellations from early June through August 19, to help plan ahead for the busy summer travel season. Southwest Airlines last week also extended flight cancellations for 737 Max planes from June until August."Based upon our ongoing work with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Boeing, we are highly confident that the MAX will be recertified prior to this time," American Chairman and CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom said Sunday in a message to airline staff. "But by extending our cancellations through the summer, we can plan more reliably for the peak travel season."Approximately 115 flights a day will be canceled through August 19, representing about 1.5% of the airline's total daily flights, they said.The airline has 24 737 Max jets in its fleet. American has previously said that all flights that were originally scheduled on a MAX plane will not be canceled, with some being substituted with other aircraft.The 737 Max was grounded in March after one of the planes flown by Ethiopian Airlines crashed, killing everyone on board. It was the second accident involving the jet model in less than six months, after another flown by Indonesia's Lion Air crashed last October. The crashes killed 346 people in total.The causes of the crashes are still being investigated, but the focus has been on an automatic safety feature that may have forced the nose of each plane lower when it incorrectly sensed the plane was in danger of going into a stall.Boeing and the FAA said they are working on an upgrade of the 737 Max software to deal with that safety feature.Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said on Thursday the planemaker is closing in on a fix for the software, and a majority of the 50 customers that have ordered 737 Max planes have had a chance to test it using a flight simulator.He added that the update will make the plane "even safer" because it will prevent "erroneous" sensor readings."It's our responsibility to eliminate this risk," Muilenburg said.Muilenburg did not say when 737 Max planes may begin flying again.Boeing announced earlier this month it was cutting the production rate for all of its 737 planes from 52 a month to 42 amid the worldwide grounding. 2379

American Airlines plans to cancel flights well into April because of the Boeing 737 Max grounding.American, the world's largest airline, said Sunday it is canceling about 90 flights a day out through April 24. Before Sunday's announcement, American had only canceled flights through March 28.The airline is hopeful that that the 737 Max planes will be flying again soon, but said it is canceling flights about a month out as it waits for word from the Federal Aviation Administration."Canceling in advance provides additional availability and rebooking options for our customers," said the statement from American.The global fleet of 371 of the 737 Max jets was grounded indefinitely on March 13 after two of the planes had fatal crashes. A Lion Air flight crashed in October and an Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed on March 10.The causes of the crashes have yet to be determined but the focus has been on an automatic safety feature which may have forced the nose of each plane lower when it incorrectly believed the plane was in danger of going into a stall.Boeing and the FAA said they are working on an upgrade of its software to deal with that safety feature. An Alaska Airlines flight from San Francisco to Philadelphia was forced to divert, all thanks to a belligerent passenger who tried twice to light up inside the cabin.Passengers boarding Alaska Airlines' red-eye flight 1138 in San Francisco were in for quite a surprise. Over halfway through the flight, they had to divert to Chicago.One of their fellow passengers tried to break one of the cardinal rules of modern air travel: do not smoke on airplanes. Then the passenger refused to comply with flight crew instructions by trying to light up a cigarette -- again.About an hour before they were supposed to land in Philadelphia, pilots were forced to divert to O'Hare International Airport."Due to a disruptive passenger onboard and out of an abundance of caution, the flight was diverted to Chicago and landed at 4:22 a.m. local time," Alaska Airlines told CNN.Chicago Police say they were asked to meet the plane because of the cigarette-lighting passenger, who "was somewhat belligerent."While the individual was escorted off the plane without incident, the diversion added an hour onto the other passengers' red-eye flight, since the plane needed refueling.It's unclear if the passenger will face any punishment for their actions. The FAA, which enforces the regulations the passenger violated, told CNN the incident is under investigation.Chicago Police say they did not make an arrest. The FBI and US Marshals tell CNN they did not make any arrest either.According to the agency's own recommendations, a flight attendant or pilot in charge should be filing a noncompliance report.CNN has asked Alaska Airlines if the crew from the flight has filed a report but has not yet received a response. 1711
