MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Hurricane Iota is moving across northern Nicaragua with hurricane strength winds of around 85 mph after making landfall as a dangerous Category 4 storm. Iota came ashore along almost exactly the same stretch of Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast that was devastated by an equally powerful Hurricane Eta just 13 days earlier. Iota had intensified into an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm during the day Monday, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center says it weakened slightly as it neared the coast late Monday and made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 kph). Eta’s torrential rains saturated the soil in the region, meaning Iota's rains have nowhere to go and could cause deadly landslides.In their 7 a.m. update, the National Hurricane Center said Iota is expected to create "flash flooding, landslides, life-threatening storm surge and powerful winds across portions of Central America Tuesday."The NHC says Iota is moving west, further inland, and will move across Honduras Tuesday night into Wednesday. Lutz, Fla. — The driver of a Tesla plowed through the wall of an empty storefront and then into the side of the Anytime Fitness on North Dale Mabry Highway in Pasco County, Florida.No one in the gym was hurt, although witnesses tell Scripps station WFTS in Tampa there were several people working out at the time, which was before noon on Sunday, April 22.The driver was also not injured.Florida Highway Patrol and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.The driver told troopers and deputies that she was coming into the parking lot to stop at the nearby nail salon, and said she was pressing the brakes, but the vehicle kept accelerating.The first store she crashed into used to be a karate studio where kids would normally be working out, but that business recently re-located.Her vehicle slammed through a second wall, into the gym next to several treadmills.Authorities did not administer a sobriety test, according to the crash report.Tesla vehicle are equipped with what is called “Auto-Pilot” mode, but auto-pilot is not the vehicle’s mode of functioning, especially if the vehicle is not on a highway and is turning into a parking lot. 1179

Marc Short, the chief of staff for Vice President Mike Pence, has contracted COVID-19, according to The New York Times and Bloomberg.Pence's staff says the Vice President tested negative for the virus on Saturday.According to the Times, Pence's office released a statement Saturday night saying that even though Pence had close contact with Short in recent days, he "will maintain his schedule in accordance with the CDC guidelines for essential personnel.”The announcement came shortly after Bloomberg reported Saturday night that another one of Pence's top aides, Marty Obst, had also tested positive for the virus."Today, Marc Short, Chief of Staff to the Vice President, tested positive for COVID-19, began quarantine and assisting in the contact tracing process," a statement from Pence press secretary Devin O'Malley read, according to Axios. "Vice President Pence and Mrs. Pence both tested negative for COVID-19 today, and remain in good health.
