PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. – Two sets of sisters graduated Marine Corps recruit training together, further strengthening their bonds.The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in Parris Island, South Carolina, says one set includes Virginia sisters Ashley and Amber Valentine, while the other is comprised of Maria, Vanessa and Melissa Placido Jaramillo, who grew up in Nevada.According to MCRD, the Valentine sisters joined shortly after their grandfather passed away and wanted to carry on his legacy in the U.S. armed services.Ashley, 19, and Amber, 22, say having each other to rely on through training helped during some of their highest highs and lowest lows.“I went through a moment during first phase where I received some bad news in a letter, and she was there to be a shoulder for me to lean on,” Amber said in a press release posted to MCRD’s Facebook page.However, the Valentines won’t be attending combat training together, because Ashley suffered a hip fracture prior to graduation and must heal. After combat training, Amber plans to serve in the communications field and Ashley will be certified as a motor transportation operator.As for the Placido Jaramillo family, Maria, Vanessa and Melissa made a pact to join the military together when they were young children, according to MCRD. Melissa and Vanessa, both 22, are identical twins. Maria is a year younger than them at age 21.During recruit training, Melissa says the sisters succeeded thanks to friendly competition and daily positive affirmation.MCRD says the three sisters have yet to find out what military occupational specialty they will be assigned but are looking forward to what the Marine Corps has in store for them. (WTMJ) -- A Wisconsin woman has been charged with second degree recklessly endangering safety after she allegedly had her 9-year-old son ride on top of her minivan to hold down a plastic pool.According to the criminal complaint, it happened around 3 p.m. local time on Sept. 9, when officers responded to reports of a child riding on top of a minivan.A 911 caller followed Amber Schmunk, 28, of Fredonia, until she pulled over and took her child and the pool off the vehicle's roof. Schmunk then continued driving down the road and stopped at her sister’s house where police caught up with her.Schmunk told police picked up the pool at a residence but did not have enough room inside the minivan. She said she “decided to put the pool on top of the minivan, but had no way to strap it down, so she had her child climb on the roof and hold it down while she drove.”Schmunk admitted to police she had her oldest son ride on top of the minivan, “but only for a short time, maybe 20-30 seconds.” Schmunk later stated it was safe because she used a strap to tie the child down on top of the pool.She also told the officer that she believed it was “ok” as her father let her do things like that when she was that age.Schmunk will be back in court on Nov. 14. If convicted, she faces up to ten years in prison and up to a ,000 fine. 1417

Police have made an arrest in the death of Melinda Pleskovic — a long-time Strongsville, Ohio teacher.The fiancé of Melinda's daughter has been charged with aggravated murder.Jeffrey Scullin, 20, was arrested Tuesday. His bond was set at million. RELATED: Strongsville man calls 911, says 'I think someone killed my wife'Authorities did not release any additional information about the case in a news conference Tuesday afternoon. Scullin was one of the people who called 911 when Melinda's body was found at their home last Monday night. Hear a portion of the 911 call in the media player above. He told dispatchers he had just arrived at the home with Melinda's husband. Melinda was supposed to meet her husband at Brew Kettle for dinner that night but never arrived. Police said Scullin lived at the home. The police report from the night of the homicide shows his fiancé — Melinda's daughter — also lived there. Just one week earlier, Scullin can be heard calling 911 again, this time to report a break-in. He told the dispatcher the person he saw looked like him."Probably a male," he can be heard saying on the call. "They were around my size and I'm pretty big. PACIFIC BEACH (KGTV)-- Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and police are bracing for partiers with maximum enforcement throughout the holiday.At Pacific Beach dozens of motorized scooters pooled around two San Diego Police Officers. They educated dozens of riders on the rules, saying riders need to wear a helmet. They've given out dozens of tickets as well, since Friday.Skateboards and roller skates are also not allowed on the boardwalk. Jake Kostreba said he rides on the boardwalk all the time and was frustrated at why he received a ticket, "I mean I guess someone needs to clean up the beach so, I'll be that guy, so whatever, it's pretty dirty."Police say he lost control of his board and it hit a woman's shin.Visitors told 10News they don't mind the extra police presence.Ruqayyah Abdulrahoof drove down from Los Angeles, "I think it's really important to see the police over here especially with the kids and the beach I think it's really important to make sure the people have a good safe memorial day weekend and nobody's drinking I think it's a great place, and good to see officers are making an effort."Scot Brantley came down with his wife and baby from Washington for a friend's crossfit tournament and echoed the sentiment, "I think we feel safe you know people are out here enjoying having a good time so nothing too crazy so far but it's early it's early though."On the beach, lifeguards have been busy as well, rescuing 20 people and rendering medical aid to 47 Saturday. They also had more than 1,000 preventative interactions.Lifeguards want you to know smoking and alcohol is never permitted at the beach.Police geared up for a weekend of DUI checkpoints and extra patrols. Chula Vista, San Diego City and County will all have checkpoints set up, looking for impaired drivers. That includes medication as well as alcohol.DUI arrests are up this year compared to 2017 on the same day. Friday night 24 people were arrested compared to 17 last year.The maximum enforcement period continues through Memorial Day evening. 2091
