SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This week, a massive Mola mola fish stunned whale watchers in San Diego.The fish is a unique sight, appearing to look like a giant fish head with fins. It's also known as the sunfish. Domenic Biagini, owner and captain of Gone Whale Watching San Diego, says they specialize in giving people once in a lifetime encounters. He believes the one they spotted was 7 to 8 feet. "When we came across this specific one, we were kind of blown away by the sheer magnitude of it," said Biagini.Biagini happened to have divers on his boat that day, who told him mola is one of the prized fish to swim with. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The only child to live through the Paradise Hills murder-suicide, died Saturday, relatives told 10News. Nine-year-old Ezequiel Valdivia passed at 11:23 Saturday night at Rady Children's Hospital after his family made the difficult decision to pull the plug."He's probably been gone from us for a while," said Karl Albright, Rosario's brother-in-law. "We were just using the machines to keep his body with us. But he has been upstairs with his family, watching us."Ezequiel's father, Jose Valdivia, also shot and killed his sons, Enzi, 3, Zuriel, 5, and Zeth, 11, and their 29-year-old mother, Sabrina Rosario. Valdivia then turned the gun on himself.The muder-suicide happened on Saturday, November 16 at the family's home on Flintridge Drive in Paradise Hills.The Paradise Hills community and the Twin Hills Little League came together to host this month's "Cruise Reo Car Show" as a fundraiser to help the family."The whole community of Paradise Hills came out today, and the Twin Hills Little League. They are our family forever," Vanessa Pash said. She, like Sabrina Rosario, is a Twin Hills Little League mom. Albright said Baby Enzi was the shy one, Zuriel was playful. Ezequiel was the athlete and Zeth was a sensitive sweetheart. All of them poured their love for baseball into the Twin Hills Little League."The little one was only three, and he wasn't old enough to play, but the coaches would let him go out there and practice, and make him feel like he was part of the team," Pash said. To honor the three players, the league decided to retire each child's jersey number. They also agreed to play in the boys' honor for all future games. Albright says he is overwhelmed with what the community continues to do for their family. "It's amazing how many people are coming together to do all of these things for complete strangers," Albright said. The family is now in the process of donating Ezequiel's organs. The boys and their mother will be buried together. "There's no pain, there's no suffering, no anguish, no anxiety. There's nothing. Pure peace," Albright said. Officers received another call en route to the home from a neighbor who said they heard arguing and what they believed to be a "nail gun firing." Three of the boys were found dead in the home. Ezequiel survived for one week, but was taken off life support November 23 after the doctors said he was brain dead, according to Rosario’s brother-in-law. The boys lived in the home with their mother and other relatives, but not Valdivia, who was in the process of divorcing Rosario. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There could be as many as 78 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines available by the end of 2020, according to the most optimistic timeline in leaked documents from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.But assuming that the vaccine will require two doses per individual, that figure would only be enough to inoculate the highest priority individuals, based on draft guidelines released this week from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.“We’re not even going to get through Phase 1 people” in 2020, said Dr. Mary Barger, an epidemiologist at the University of San Diego.There are an estimated 44 million people in NASEM’S Phase 1 group: frontline healthcare workers, first responders, people with multiple high-risk factors, and adults living in nursing homes and other group settings.Based on leaked CDC guidance to states published by the New York Times, if two vaccine candidates become available in October, there would be enough doses for 39 million people by the end of 2020 -- not quite enough to cover the entire Phase 1 group.If only one vaccine is available by October, the projections suggest there could be enough doses to cover 13 to 26 million people.That might only be enough for frontline healthcare workers and first responders, of which there are an estimated 17 million.Healthcare workers and first responders get the highest priority, which NASEM calls Phase 1a, so they can maintain the integrity of the healthcare system.“When there’s a pandemic, you want to make sure you have enough people to take care of those that are sick,” said Dr. Abisola Olulade of Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.Phase 1b includes individuals with multiple underlying conditions, like cancer, chronic kidney disease, and serious heart conditions.Approximately 75% of adults hospitalized for COVID-19 in the U.S. between March 1 and August 15 had at least two underlying conditions, according to data from the COVID-19 Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network cited in the NASEM guidelines. More than 60% of hospitalized adults had three or more underlying conditions.“It would make sense that you would include a segment of the population that’s at risk of doing the worst,” said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco.There are an estimated 27 million people in the Phase 1b category.Critical workers in high-risk industries like grocery store clerks, mail carriers, and bus drivers would be in Phase 2, along with teachers, homeless people, prisoners, people with moderately risky underlying conditions, and anyone over the age of 65.“Even though people 65 and older make up less than 20% of the population, there have been 80% of COVID-19 deaths in this age,” Dr. Olulade said.Risk factors including high blood pressure, liver disease, or moderate-to-severe asthma would qualify an individual for Phase 2.There are an estimated 27 million people in this phase.In Phase 3, NASEM recommends inoculating people who are at lower risk of a bad infection but may be vectors for the spread of disease, including young people and children.NASEM noted that it will be “critical to conduct additional trials to gain better understanding of safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccine among children before they receive the vaccine.” Currently, there are no COVID vaccine trials that include children.Other essential workers at moderate risk of exposure would also be included in Phase 3, including employees in restaurants, hotels, hair salons, and exercise facilities.Phase 4 includes everyone else. 3589

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday, San Diego Sheriff's investigators asked the public for help locating a Fallbrook man who disappeared in 2018.Officials say 50-year-old Arnoldo Loaiza Franco was reported missing on Aug. 10, 2018, by his family in Fallbrook, But the last time Franco had communication with anyone was on Aug. 1. At the time Franco went missing, he was reportedly working somewhere in Escondido or San Marcos at an avocado grove.Franco is described as a Hispanic man, with brown eyes and brown hair, weighing about 140 pounds and about 5-feet 8-inches tall.Anyone with information on Franco's whereabouts is asked to call SDSO's Homicide Unit at 858-285-6286 or the Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 716
