CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista Police officer stabbed while on duty will be awarded the Congressional Badge of Bravery. On July 27, Officer David Sachs will be awarded the badge by United States Attorney for the Southern District of California Robert Brewer. The award, created in 2008, honors exceptional acts of bravery in the line of duty. On September 19 of 2017, Officer Sachs along with Officer Leo Banales and Chaplain Wes Anderson responded to a home on Monterey Avenue after receiving a report that a man’s neighbor threw a large piece of concrete over his fence, injuring the victim.RELATED: Chula Vista Police officer who shot man recovering from stabbing When officers arrived, the victim pointed out the suspect’s house. After knocking on the door, the suspect’s mother answered and invited the officers in.Police say, though they didn’t know at the time, the suspect, described as a 6-foot-tall man in his late 20s, was suffering from emotional or psychological distress.After stepping into the home’s kitchen, the suspect started attacking Sachs with a knife, stabbing him multiple times in the face, head and arm.Police say Sachs was able to knock the suspect to the ground while yelling “Knife! Knife! Knife!” to his partners.The suspect then lunged at Banales with a knife before he and Anderson went outside. According to police, Sachs drew his weapon and told the suspect to drop the knife before the suspect blocked the exit and attacked him again with the knife.RELATED: Officer stabbed, suspect shot three times in Chula Vista Police say Sachs then moved the suspect’s mother behind him for safety and shot the suspect. The suspect collapsed in the dining room after being struck.After hearing the shots, Anderson went back to the home’s front door to help. After more officers arrived, medical aid was given to the hospital who was taken to the hospital where he later died.Sachs was stabbed six times. Following seven months of recovery, he returned to full-duty and is still serving today.In May of 2018, Sachs was awarded a Medal of Valor and Purple Heart by the Chula Vista Police Department. 2141

(KGTV) -- A man was arrested early Wednesday morning after police said he broke into a Chula Vista woman's home and took a shower.At around 4:30 a.m., a resident called 911 to report a stranger in her home using her shower, prompting her to flee. She said the man she did not know somehow entered her home as she slept.When officers arrived at the home on Orange Avenue, they called on the man to come out of the house, but he refused to leave and locked himself inside the bathroom.After about an hour, officers entered the house through a window and were able to take the man into custody.The unidentified man was taken to jail, but there is no immediate word on what charges he faces. 715

CINCINNATI -- Lockland (Ohio) firefighter Michael Allen said he could feel his heart beating in his chest when he heard a 10-month-old was trapped in an apartment fire.A mother had been cooking at her apartment on Sunday when a fire started in the kitchen. She was able to get three of her children outside, but the smoke was too thick for her to get to her baby. A police officer tried to rescue the child, but he too was swallowed in smoke.Allen was on his way to the fire when he learned the child was trapped on the second floor.“There was no thinking twice, there was no second guessing in what had to be done.  You just – you know everything comes to you, things (you've) probably not thought about in five years … everything comes back, and you jump in the action and you go,” Allen said.He said he could see the fire growing from the kitchen when he opened the door. He heard the baby crying as he put his oxygen mask on and made his way through the smoke to the second floor.“The baby stopped crying, so then immediately you’re thinking the worst is about to happen,” Allen said. “I made it into her bedroom. I found the crib relatively quick, was able to pick her up and when I did she did start to cry again, so I took my mask off, covered her face up and brought her outside to mom.”Allen has been a firefighter for more than 10 years. He said nothing tops the joy he felt when he handed the baby to her mother.“It’s an incredible feeling. It’s exactly why we do this job,” Allen said. “It doesn’t matter who you are. You become a fireman to help people and make their day better than what it was before you got there.”First responders gave the baby oxygen and transported her to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for observation, but she is expected to be OK.Allen said he knows things could have been much worse.“Had we been on a call, you gotta have units respond from other departments if you’re out, so knowing that everything just fell in place perfectly today and that little baby is going to make it … it’s a good feeling,” he said. 2097

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A former longtime employee of the Sweetwater Union High School District pleaded not guilty Tuesday afternoon to felony charges of embezzlement. Danya Williams, 42, is charged with embezzling more than ,000 over 18 months beginning in June of 2017. Williams worked for the district for 17 years in the accounting department and most recently human resources. According to prosecutors, she was in charge of taking money orders to pay for background checks of job applicants. She's accused of altering the money orders; making them payable to herself. Prosecutors say she deposited 800 money orders into her own personal account. "Some that weren't hired can request them back. When some of them were asked for them back, they discovered they were never deposited into an account," said Deputy District Attorney Kimball Denton. Williams resigned from the district when the allegations surfaced. She's out of jail on a ,000 bond. She could face four years in prison if convicted. She has no criminal record. "It's very disappointing and sad when people who we trust within our school communities do brazen things like this that breach that trust and we're going to be holding her accountable for her actions." "She probably ranks in the top ten of the most nervous I've ever had. She's about to have a breakdown today. She's extremely nervous, and again, she's the nicest person you'll ever meet. "Old Town looks normal on weekends believe it or not. Parking is hard to find, it's encouraging for us," said Tafoya.His tiny shop, The American House, nestled in the historic district has been closed for nearly half a year and survived thanks to online sales. "We tried to do curbside for bulk items, and online helped us out."He's now ready to pivot from virtual communication, back to in-person. "We're doing kind of a like a walk-by. They walk through the front, order through an old fashioned window, and grab their drink. If they want to buy bulk, they just walk in," Tofoya described.They'll start slow and open on weekends but will extend hours if needed, "If business picks up, we're ready to go."While online sales helped during their store closure, they also had to file unemployment.
