JOSEPH, Mo. — The St. Joseph Police Department (SJPD) is investigating after a woman found a bomb on her front porch.Alexis Washington was up late with her newborn daughter and young son when she heard a loud pop and saw a flash of red light. When she came outside to check it out, she found the bomb on her porch."The cop told me then that the propane tank was leaking, there was ammunition on top of it with a paper towel that was lit on fire," Washington said. "A bomb? I just don't understand, like a bomb? You can't fight that. That's why it's just like you've got to go. I got to go."SJPD Cpt. Jeff Wilson said the bomb was definitely homemade. Shamika Burrage survived a near-fatal car accident two years ago, but not without losing something pretty important: her left ear.Now, thanks to a novel procedure performed at an Army medical center in Texas, Burrage is getting that ear back in a most unusual way.Plastic surgeons harvested cartilage from Burrage's ribs to create a new ear and then grew it under the skin of her forearm. Then the doctors at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso successfully transplanted the ear from her arm to her head.The technique -- a first time in the Army -- is called prelaminated forearm free flap, said Lt. Col. Owen Johnson III, chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center.Some of the big advantages of it is that it reduced the chance of more scarring around Burrage's ear. Also, growing the ear under the skin of her forearm allows new blood vessels to form."(The ear) will have fresh arteries, fresh veins and even a fresh nerve so she'll be able to feel it," Johnson said on the US Army's website.Burrage, a 21-year-old private, still has to endure two more surgeries, but she's feeling more optimistic about the future than ever in the years since her accident."It's been a long process for everything, but I'm back," said Burrage. 1295

Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School six years ago, the way law enforcement and citizens handle these events has changed.The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has partnered with a program known as ALERRT, which stands for Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training.The program was created in order to help standardize the response to active shooters and streamline their response in a crisis. "It was important to make sure everybody received the same training, knowing that if that response occurs, it's going to be a multi-agency response,” said Nathaniel McQueen, with Delaware State Police, in an interview with CNN.But all of this occurs once police get to the scene.What about before?"On an average of three minutes, those cops are gonna show up and they are going to take that shooter's attention from you towards them,” says Gordon B. (AP) — South Dakota, which has seen an uptick in coronavirus infections in recent weeks, is bracing to host hundreds of thousands of bikers for the 80th edition of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.More than 250,000 people are expected to attend the Aug. 7 to Aug. 16 rally in western South Dakota, which could make it the biggest event anywhere since the coronavirus pandemic started.The event will offer businesses that depend on the rally a chance to make up losses after the downturn in tourism spending.City Manager Daniel Ainslie told ABC News that sales tax revenue from the rally brought the community million last year and the event generated about 5 million across South Dakota.But many of Sturgis' roughly 7,000 residents are leery about the brimming bars and bacchanalia coming their way and say it shouldn't go on during a pandemic.The age of the average rally participant is also concerning to some, with most motorcyclists part of an older demographic and more at risk of severe illness from the coronavirus.ABC obtained a statement from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention that said large gatherings make it difficult to maintain social distancing guidelines, which may put attendees at risk of exposure to the virus.“Any identification of cases following a large gathering would not likely be confirmed until 2-3 weeks after the event," the statement says. 1413

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A Florida woman was arrested on Sunday after police say she stripped naked and ran around at a public park because she believed a giant spider was on her and she had to get away from it. St. Petersburg Police arrested 40-year-old Danielle Teeples on Sunday at Bartlett Park around 2:15 p.m. Police say that Teeples was completely nude and that there were numerous people in the park at the time of the incident. Police say that traffic on 4th Street South was heavy at the time of the incident and that numerous vehicles were slowing and honking at Teeples as they saw her behavior. According to an arrest report, Teeples was "acting erratically and rubbing her hair and breasts while screaming and running between two trees."St. Pete Police say Teeples initially refused to get dressed after police contacted her. Post Miranda, police say that Teeples admitted to recently using drugs such as crack cocaine, spice and crystal meth. She also said that she believed a giant spider was on her and she had to get away from it.Teeples was arrested and charged with exposure of sexual organs.  1164
