President Donald Trump announced on Friday that State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert is his choice to succeed Nikki Haley as US ambassador to the United Nations.Nauert, a former Fox News host who arrived at the State Department in 2017, would be a relatively inexperienced newcomer in one of the most high-profile positions in US diplomacy. Her nomination sets the stage for a potentially tough Senate confirmation hearing, where Democrats will likely grill Nauert on her qualifications for the position. In an administration rife with internal conflict and deeply distrustful of the UN, Nauert's nomination would place a less senior person at the international agency than Haley, who reportedly sparred with other administration officials. This story is breaking and will be updated.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. President Donald Trump said Thursday he has authorized American troops on the US-Mexico border to "use lethal force" if necessary against an approaching group of migrants while also threatening to close "the whole border."Trump, who was speaking with military members and reporters at Mar-a-Lago, also said there "certainly could" be a government shutdown over border wall funding in December."If they have to, they're going to use lethal force. I've given the OK," Trump said. "If they have to -- I hope they don't have to.""I have no choice," Trump said, and, without providing evidence, added, "You're dealing with a minimum of 500 serious criminals" and "rough people."Earlier this week, Trump approved a memorandum that granted new authority to troops on the border to protect Customs and Border Protection personnel from migrants if they engage in violence. Until the new authority was granted, troops were not allowed to intervene if CBP personnel came under attack unless they needed to act in their own self-defense.Trump has sent nearly 6,000 troops to the US-Mexico border to protect against a group of migrants coming through Mexico from Central America. Many of the migrants have said they are seeking asylum and fleeing gang violence and persecution in their home countries. Trump ordered the deployment shortly before the midterm elections, when Trump was making the fight against illegal immigration a central part of his pitch for Republicans seeking office.Defense Secretary James Mattis said Wednesday "there has been no call for any lethal force from (the Department of Homeland Security)," saying that any troops backing up customs personnel would not be carrying firearms but could be equipped with shields and batons.Trump on Thursday also said "two days ago we closed the border," and added, "nobody's coming in."He was apparently referring to Monday's temporary closure of all northbound vehicle traffic at the nation's busiest port of entry, San Ysidro. CBP said the lanes were closed to install jersey barriers and concertina wire and "to prepare for the potential arrival of thousands of people migrating in a caravan heading towards the border of the United States."The President said "if we find that it's uncontrollable" or it gets to a point where "our people are going to start getting hurt, we will close entry into the country for a period of time until we can get it under control.""The whole border. I mean the whole border," Trump said."When they lose control of the border on the Mexico side, we just close the border," Trump said, further explaining that means Mexico will "not be able to sell their cars into the United States."Thursday evening, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reiterated the administration's position that the group will not be allowed to cross into the US."The caravans will not be permitted to enter the United States," Pompeo said in a statement. "There are real dangers to the safety and human rights of migrants from those who would prey on them." 3033

President Donald Trump lashed out at the FBI late Saturday, describing its failure to follow up on a tip about Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz as "very sad."The FBI has said it failed to act on information about Cruz, who massacred 17 people Wednesday at his former high school in Parkland. The shooting reignited demands for tougher gun laws, with student survivors gathering in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday to criticize Trump and other lawmakers for their inaction.  483

President Donald Trump has pulled most of his advertising from TV over the past week, ceding the airwaves to Democratic rival Joe Biden, who is currently outspending him by more than 10-to-1. That's according to data from the ad tracking firm CMAG/Kantar. It is unusual for a White House contender to mostly go dark on TV with the election just over two months away. The move comes after the Trump campaign recently acknowledged it was trying to conserve money. That's allowed Biden an opportunity to communicate an unfiltered message to voters without competing advertising. Trump's campaign says it will ramp up ad spending soon.Earlier this year, CMAG/Kantar projected that billion in ads would be spent on this year's election. 743

President Donald Trump refuted a report from The Atlantic on Thursday that claimed he called Sen. John McCain and U.S. soldiers who died fighting for their country "losers" and "suckers."According to The Atlantic, in the days after McCain's death in August 2018, Trump told senior staff members that he did not want to support that "loser's" funeral and became "furious" that flags at the White House had been lowered to half-staff in McCain's honor.McCain spent more than five years in a Vietnamese war camp after his plane was shot down during the Vietnam war. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump responded to criticism from McCain by saying he liked soldiers who "weren't captured."The outlet also reported that Trump made similar comments during a trip to Paris in 2018, when a visit to nearby Aisne-Marne American Cemetery was canceled due to rain. While officials at the time claimed the Secret Service was unable to fly a helicopter due to the weather, senior staff members who were in Paris claim the trip was canceled because Trump believed his hair would be ruined in the rain.Trump also reportedly claimed the cemetery — a memorial site to hundreds of American soldiers who were killed during World War I — was "filled with losers" and "suckers."Much of the reporting was further confirmed in reports by The Washington Post and The Associated Press. In a series of tweets on Thursday evening, Trump denied the accusations, calling them "fake news." He claimed he called for flags at the White House to be flown at half-staff "without hesitation or complaint" following McCain's death."I never called John a loser and swear on whatever, or whoever, I was asked to swear on, that I never called our great fallen soldiers anything other than HEROES," Trump tweeted on Thursday. 1801
